NASA Television to Broadcast Two Russian Spacewalks in August

NASA Television will provide live coverage as two Russian cosmonauts venture outside the International Space Station on spacewalks Friday, Aug. 16, and Thursday, Aug. 22.

NASA TV coverage will begin at 10 a.m. EDT both days.

Flight Engineers Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin will install equipment for the arrival of a new Russian module and begin preparations for the installation later this year of an optical telescope.

The Aug. 22 spacewalk also is scheduled to begin at about 10:40 a.m. Yurchikhin and Misurkin will remove a space laser communications system from the hull of the Zvezda service module and install a pointing platform on which a small optical telescope will be installed on a future Russian spacewalk.

The spacewalks will be the 172nd and 173rd in support of space station assembly and maintenance, the seventh and eighth of Yurchikhin’s career and the second and third for Misurkin. Yurchikhin will wear a Russian Orlan suit bearing red stripes, and Misurkin will wear a suit with blue stripes. Misurkin’s suit also will be equipped with a U.S. helmet camera to provide close up views of the work he will be performing outside the station.

I wonder why they moved the start three hours earlier. When will they have lunch if the EVA starts at 11:40 AM their time? :) Won't the cosmonauts have to sleep shift in order to do all the prep work?

Also, I'd like to get my hands on the timeline, if anybody knows where to look. Nasa.gov not working for me right now.

Removal of BTLS-N H/W (External Onboard Laser Comm Terminal) of [СЛС] space

Do we know why they want to remove it, since it is reported to work perfectly ?

I should be on for most of the time.

BUT, it would be helpful if someone knowledgeable explained the russian acronyms that appear all over the timeline or at least the most important ones.

Anyone?

Both cosmonauts are in suits with blue stripes. Yurchikhin changed suit: he used suit #5 in EVA-34, he uses suit #4 now. As far as I know, it is unscheduled replacing. Misurkin uses suit #6 in both EVAs.

There's something in the Aug 20 ISS daily report about suit 4 checkout, so the decision must have been made by then

Covering the BTLS-N "monoblock" before removing it

Russian friends: am I correct in thinking "monoblock" (which PAO is introducing to Englsh) is just the Russian word for "unit"  (i.e. a piece of equipment consisting of a single item)?

External Onboard Laser Comm Terminal BTLS-N will be removed from universal work platform URM-D and brought inside ISS. In future it will be installed outside MLM module.

EVA Work Station VRM and Biaxial Pointing Platform DPN will be installed onto URM-D in place of BTLS-N.

During EVA-37 on December 16, 2013 high-resolution UrtheCast camera will be installed onto DPN and middle-resolution UrtheCast camera - onto URM-D (in place of Foton-Gamma equipment removed during EVA-33). Both cameras will be delivered aboard Progress M-21M in November.

Ah, that makes more sense. During the depress, PAO talked about something being disposed of aboard the Progress and I thought he was talking about BTLS-N, but I must have misheard (was still rubbing sleep out of my eyes at the time)

Apparently the base plate was improperly aligned, but apparently - and much to the surprise of us and the NASA TV PAO - they have gone ahead and installed it, as it's only out of misalignment in the yaw position - which can be corrected mechanically.

I have not heard due to bad communication. But I think that they installed VRM+DPN now in incorrect position with aim to check their functionality. Maybe I am wrong.

So they figured out what the problem was??

I have not heard due to bad communication. But I think that they installed VRM+DPN now in incorrect position with aim to check their functionality. Maybe I am wrong.

So PAO said, if I understood correctly, that there's a yaw joint which gives
the necessary degree of freedom to correct the misalignment, so they can just use it as is

Yes, it was WAL-6 on the fwd end of Zvezda. Apparently they had already figured that out from looking at it from inside the station and didn't even bother to go visit it, if I understood the PAO correctly.
