The article for this "how it was done" is ETA Wednesday.

Hopefully you've seen them already, but if not, the gif reconstructions of how the frames were repaired are beautiful.  :)

(First two are start-finish, second two are partial progress)

Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That second one is epic. ;D

Tonight I'll probably be looking for some of these in reduced size, 350 pixel width for the article. I'll let you all know.

Have you seen the "last progress report" page in the wiki?  Feel free to grab anything you need from there for the article :)

No mention of the 'Common Dirt Spots'?

It's been said before, and I'll say it again, "Woe to the video restoration professional that has a customer that knows that this thread exists."

I'm proud to have played the tiniest part in this video, if only to understand the true difficulty of the task.  You guys did a fantastic job.

Yes, I had a look at the wiki, used it as a cross-check mainly after I wrote the article, which is based on the notes I collected before you started on the wiki summary (I read through the entire thread, start to finish :o ). That was a good match, and Jakusb, don't worry about the dirt spots :). My text is now with Chris, who will polish it up to NSF standards ;).

By the way, for those who prefer text over video or are at work or something and want to know a bit more about MPEG4, here's a link to my earlier explanation of the technical aspects of the repair.

Lourens' article now in first draft complete.

While we're working this, can I request a best res, best view slide as the lead image for the article. So the best recovered image (Dimensions would be 630x250).

Also, can we create this:
http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=34597.msg1211091#msg1211091
Into a 350 width x (whatever works) gif, no more than about 1.8 mb in size, to go into the article?

If anyone wants to take this on, you can find all the frames in the attached archive.

Does anyone on the team have any experience with post-production enhancement/VFX? I'm very much an amateur but just a few minutes with After Effects produced a result that is more pleasing to the untrained eye. I selectively blurred the most obvious macroblock edges for those times they were visible, removed the interlacing stripes, and also played around with adding noise to those sections that are already lacking in detail as the result looks more natural.

I'm sure anyone familiar with this class of tool could do a really great job with this footage.

I'll take number 2 please. Best res that's available.

It's probably not possible to keep all the frames composing this gif animation with a size below 1.8 mb, even with the resizing. We (actually more precisely saliva_sweet :P) probably either have to remove some frames or maybe post it as a html5 compatible video? (.mp4 / .ogg)

Offline Chris Bergin

Only .gif will go into the article per the requirement.

Best image...  Well, we have a few more choices than those first two partial i frames that were first released.  I'll throw in a few favorites to narrow it down.  183, just after the exhaust plume hits the ocean.  211, just before touchdown.  280, 'Look ma, I float!'

Hacked at version of saliva_sweet's gif of the reconstruction at the requested size and about half the frames removed to make it 1.77MB.

Congrats on a monumental team effort that will surely get its well-deserved footnote in Space Exploration History! - It has been an amazing thing to follow.

Now it would be great to see another effort: namely to "doll up" the final vid. Yes, we space enthusiasts and purists will always prefer the real thing, but for everybody else out there a nice smooth hi-res video with sound will be superb.

For inspiration, the wizardry done on the Curiosity Descent video (side-by-side comparison):

The result:

Might be worth it to add the latest progress with p frame conversion as the last frame. Unfortunately the video is using an old mpg4-img for that frame not the updated one here http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=34597.msg1215938#msg1215938
It's not noticable in the video,  but looks a bit harsh as a still.

So amazing what you all have done here.  I'm glad I could have contributed in my small way, but it's nothing compared to the hours and hours of amazing work that was performed by everyone on this project.  The video is truly a historic piece of rocket development and without your work it simply would not be appreciated by the public at large.

All the effort by those involved here really makes me proud to be a member on this forum and involved.
