SNAST SpaceMobile leans on Blue Origin to ramp up satellite launches
November 14, 2024

AST SpaceMobile said Nov. 14 it has booked rockets from Blue Origin and others to deploy [...] satellites between 2025 and 2026 [...].

[...]

Founder Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile’s CEO and chair, said during an earnings call with analysts that India’s GSLV is first up and will launch a single Block 2 BlueBird.

He said two SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets carrying four Block 2 BlueBirds each would probably come next, followed by successive Blue Origin New Glenn rockets, which have a fairing big enough to deploy eight of the satellites at a time to low Earth orbit (LEO).

[...]

The launch window for this satellite was previously reported to be December 2024 - March 2025.

Avellan said Block 2 BlueBirds set to launch from around the middle of 2025 would also include chips developed in-house to enable 10 gigahertz of processing bandwidth per satellite — 10 times the capacity of a Block 1 BlueBird, supporting up to 120 megabits per second (Mbps) peak data rates.

[...]

However, during their Q3 earnings webcast they said that the first few Block 2 BlueBirds will use the old chips (FPGAs) that are also present on the Block 1 BlueBirds, and that the new chips (ASICs) will be introduced to later Block 2 BlueBirds. So this launch will take place before mid-2025.

Note that there are currently 3 launches targeting launch in March from the Second Launch Pad. (NISAR, Gaganyaan-G1 & this one). I'd not be surprised if at least one of these slips.

Does this imply that the Gaganyaan-G1 will be behind this LVM3? Curious to see the order & timeline if 3 launches are planned form same pad for March. Seems unlikely they will be able to do all 3.

Is this block 2 of Blue Bird multiple satellites collectively weighing at least 3 tonnes, or one single satellite weighing 3 tonnes or more? Since it is the LVM3, anything less than 3 tonnes wouldn't make much sense.

As of now it's believed to just be 1 BlueBird Block 2 Satellite. The Block 2 are 3x the size of Block 1. Weight isn't exactly known, but estimated between 3000-4500 kg. There have been reports from India news media saying Satellites, plural not singular, so some speculation there, but the company so far has only said 1.

According to the DT interview with the Chairman the LVM3-M5 mission is a 5100kg satellite. No confirmed launch date, but appears NISAR is first & then this BlueBird Mission then G1 later.

From AST's 10-K filing: Satellite is expected to ship in Late-April, with launch "shortly thereafter":

Quote
We have entered into launch agreements with multiple launch service providers which will enable us to commence a planned launch campaign during 2025 and 2026 to launch approximately 60 Block 2 BB satellites. We have commenced assembling and testing the Block 2 BB satellites in accordance with our plan to meet this launch campaign to enable Continuous SpaceMobile Service coverage across key markets such as the United States, Europe, Japan and other strategic markets as well as to facilitate U.S. government applications. We expect to ship the first next-generation Block 2 BB satellite to the launch provider by the end of April 2025 for a launch estimated to occur shortly thereafter, which will commence our launch campaign of approximately 60 Block 2 BB satellites in 2025 through 2026. The timing of shipment of the first Block 2 BB satellite is contingent on a number of factors including satisfactory and timely completion of the assembly and testing of the Block 2 BB satellite, regulatory approvals for the launch, readiness of the launch vehicle, logistics and other factors, many of which are beyond our control.

They still don't have FCC license for this sat.

"The LVM3 rocket will orbit one Block 2 BlueBird satellite in Low Earth Orbit. The mission is slated for May this year," disclosed D Radhakrishnan, NSIL Chairman and Managing Director.

"Radhakrishnan also said discussions are on for launching AST SpaceMobile's other satellites."

The BlueBird Block 2 Satellite would need to ship in the next couple of weeks to meet this.

Cross-post:
LVM3-M6 scheduled for H2 2025:
Quote
ISRO ISRO successfully conducted the flight acceptance hot test of CE20 Cryogenic Engine for LVM3-M6 Mission
March 14, 2025

On March 14, 2025, ISRO successfully conducted the flight acceptance hot testing of the cryogenic engine identified for the sixth operational mission of LVM3 launch vehicle (LVM-M6) at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri. Cryogenic engines for every mission undergo hot testing as part of its acceptance for the flight. Hot tests for the indigenous cryogenic engine (CE20)used in the Cryogenic Upper Stage of LVM3 were so far performed at the High-Altitude Test (HAT) facility at IPRC, where vacuum conditions are simulated with complex installations, limiting the maximum hot test duration to 25s.

In the current test, the engine was tested for a longer duration of 100s for the first time using an innovative Nozzle Protection System under non-vacuum conditions. This test method significantly reduces the setup time and effort required for the flight acceptance testing of a cryogenic engine, which in turn helps faster delivery of cryogenic stages for space missions.

Performance of the CE20 engine met all the test objectives and the parameters were closely matching with the predictions during the entire duration of the test. Further, this engine will be integrated to the Cryogenic Upper Stage of the launch vehicle for the LVM3-M6 mission, which is scheduled during the second half of 2025.
No idea what the payload could be...
No payload yet announced.

Quote from: SpaceX Ex Parte (Jun 2)
AST’s orbital debris mitigation plan fails to demonstrate that the FM1 satellite can operate safely and sustainably—indeed, the inconsistencies, discrepancies and inadequacies of AST’s orbital debris showings suggest the opposite.

Prematurely authorizing AST to launch its FM-1/FM-2 satellites before it comprehensively demonstrates compliance with the Commission’s orbital debris mitigation rules and NASA standard practices would create untenable risks for all operators, including U.S.-licensed systems such as SpaceX that deliver critical connectivity to millions of American consumers.

And if based on such a showing the Commission ultimately grants AST’s authorization, then it must apply those transparency, coordination, and performance-based requirements that the Commission found in the public interest in the Gen2 Order.

Will the satellite's mass reach 6,500kg? As far as I know, this is comparable to the mass of some large GEO satellites. Do they really want to launch such heavy satellites in large numbers? :'(

There's going to be a lot of unhappy retail shareholders today.

How exactly is New Glenn going to launch 8 satellites that are 6,500 kg each? That's way too heavy even without any payload performance shortfalls.

Either
 • It won't (launch 8 of them)
 • the satellite's mass is misstated or later versions are intended to be lighter
 • New Glenn's performance is higher than Blue is currently telling us

I have no information or intuition about which of these is the most likely.
Where would we be today if our forefathers hadn't dreamt of where they'd be tomorrow?  (For better and worse)

Block 2 mass is stated in the ODAR.

Quote
Total satellite mass at launch: 5850 kg
Dry mass of satellite at launch: 5830 kg

FM-1 has an electric propulsion system using Xenon propellant. This system consists of 2 separate, independent propulsion modules, each containing a thruster, PPU, and propellant tanks/distribution. These systems have flight heritage on prior BlueBird satellites as well as other on-orbit systems. The propellant distribution is a simple blow down design.

There will be 20kg of Xenon gas at pressure of approximately 1,000 psi. Final loading of Xenon will be performed at the launch site prior to integration with the launch vehicle.

My guess is that first BlueBird Block 2 satellite is also a tech demonstrator. So it weight more i think future ones would be lighter. Yeah, All the possibility given above could be true.

After NISAR, ISRO gearing up for next U.S. collaboration with BlueBird communications satellite launch
August 01, 2025

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is hoping to launch the Block 2 BlueBird communications satellite, developed by the U.S.-based AST SpaceMobile, in three to four months from now, chairman of the space agency V. Narayanan said in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on Friday (August 1, 2025).

Right...it's conflicting information. A lot of the AST crowd seems to cast doubt on the ISRO news sources, but who knows.

A presentation shown today during a press briefing showed this now as LVM3-M6, with a launch in December 2025 or January 2026, and a later slide showed a launch in Q1 2026. However, when talking about the launch, ISRO's Chief said that it would be "in 2 or 3 months", which would mean launch is still in Q4 2025.

BlueBird 6 is fully assembled, and final tests are being completed imminently to be ready for shipment! 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

BlueBirds 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 are in various stages of production, targeting to complete all phased arrays this month. We are on track to complete 40 phased arrays by early 2026, bringing us to BlueBird 46. Each BlueBird is the largest commercial satellite ever launched to low Earth orbit!

This is just the start of our deployment roadmap, with launches every 1-2 months on average moving forward, and 20 satellites approved to launch by the FCC — and more to come. The future of space-based cellular broadband connectivity is around the corner! 🌎📱📶💪

Either something changed or these slides are outdated. Presentation from September 9th with 2 slides. 1 stating targeted launch in September for BlueBird and 1 near the end now showing it back on LVM3-M5 not M6 and next in line.

Very good news. Actually, if LVM3 with Bluebird goes up in Dec-Jan, that would be 3 LVM3-3 launched within 3 months!  Gsat-7R, Gaganyaan uncrewed, and Blue Bird.

That's $56M USD. Seems like quite a lot to pay, when you can get a Falcon 9 launch for just a little bit more. Perhaps the intention was to develop a business relationship with ISRO for potential future commercial offerings in India.

Yeah I was surprised by that cost as well, thought would be closer to $40m, but maybe there is some form of credits, I am sure ISRO would not want to disclose that. or even that included AST delay fees? But yeah, there is obvious some strategic implications or decisions at play here whether to get market access, favorable incentives/investments in future, or future lower cost launches.

AST has a big office in India, a NOC, and gets some satellite equipment from India, so there is a partnership with them and incentive to align.

AST SpaceMobile Announces BlueBird 6 Launch Date, the Largest Commercial Communications Array Ever Deployed in Low Earth Orbit

MIDLAND, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AST SpaceMobile, Inc. ("AST SpaceMobile") (NASDAQ: ASTS), the company building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by everyday smartphones, designed for both commercial and government applications, today announced BlueBird 6, a U.S. licensed satellite, is scheduled to launch on December 15th from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India.

BlueBird 6 is the first of AST SpaceMobile’s next-generation satellites. When launched, it will feature the largest commercial phased array in low Earth orbit at nearly 2,400 square feet. This represents a 3.5 times increase in size over BlueBirds 1-5 and supports 10 times the data capacity.

"Our next-generation satellites will soon enable ubiquitous cellular broadband coverage direct to everyday smartphones from space," said Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman and CEO of AST SpaceMobile. "As an American company, we are proud to demonstrate U.S. leadership in space innovation while pioneering the next era of global connectivity."

AST SpaceMobile is accelerating production with 40 satellites equivalent of microns on track to be completed by early 2026. The company expects five orbital launches by the end of Q1 2026, with launches occurring every one to two months on average to reach 45–60 satellites launched by the end of 2026 and support continuous coverage across the United States and select markets. This ramp-up is supported by nearly 500,000 square feet of manufacturing and operations facilities worldwide, including roughly 400,000 square feet in the United States, and a global workforce of nearly 1,800 people, the overwhelming majority of whom are based in the U.S.

The exact timing of orbital launches is subject to change based on a number of factors, including launch readiness of the launch provider, weather conditions, and other factors, many of which are beyond our control. Members of the public will be able to watch a live broadcast on the launch day on AST SpaceMobile's YouTube channel.

Very nice pic!  For viewers in Eastern Canada and the East Coast of the US, the launch will take place 10:30( 10:26) pm on Dec 23rd.

There is some doubt on reddit about the mass of the satellite. Is it really 6.5 tonnes, or more like 5.8. Whatever, it would still be the heaviest single satellite launched by ISRO.

I see a lot of people concerned about the launch provider, but personally, I think there's a much bigger risk of an issue with satellite deployment and commissioning than the launch itself. This was notoriously described as such:

Quote
“The size of the antenna is terrifying…there’s only a handful of entities that have deployed a foldable thing in space that big and they’re NASA and intelligence entities…it’s an extremely difficult thing to do and it’s also more or less impossible to accurately test on the ground.”
— Former Director of Engineering at SpaceX, led team of 150 engineers across multiple disciplines

And that was regarding Bluebird Block 1, which is a fraction of size of this new Block 2 design.

AST SpaceMobile Announces Successful Orbital Launch of BlueBird 6, the Largest Commercial Communications Array Ever Deployed in Low Earth Orbit [Dec 24]

Quote
AST SpaceMobile, Inc. today announced the successful orbital launch of BlueBird 6.

The BlueBird 6 mission lifted off at 10:25 p.m. EST on December 23 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. BlueBird 6 becomes now the largest commercial communications array ever deployed in low Earth orbit, spanning nearly 2,400 square feet, three times larger than AST SpaceMobile’s previous record-breaking BlueBirds 1-5, engineered to deliver commercial and government applications, including high-speed 4G and 5G space-based cellular broadband directly to standard, unmodified smartphones, and government applications that benefit from the power, size, and patented technology of AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird spacecrafts.

“BlueBird 6 is a breakthrough moment for AST SpaceMobile,” said Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile. “This launch validates years of U.S. innovation and American manufacturing, executed by our team and marks the transition to scaled deployment. With BlueBird 6 now in orbit, we are firmly on the path to delivering true space-based cellular broadband directly to everyday smartphones, at a global scale.”

Today’s successful launch kicks off our next phase of execution and keeps us on track to launch 45–60 satellites by the end of 2026, with launches planned every one or two months on average.

This launch has set a new record of 34 orbital launch attempts within the same month. The previous record of 33 was set yesterday by the first CZ-12A launch. Up to eight more records are expected until end of year.
