And here's how this race started back in 2014: Battle of the Heavyweight Rockets – SLS could face Exploration Class rival

And it may be instructive to read what people thought about this race 8 years ago: https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=35525.0

Really interesting read, it's fascinating to see where the community was back then.

It's amazing to see how SpaceX has defied expectations, they had their share of detractors and skeptics then as now, but even those who believed that SpaceX would do remarkable things couldn't foresee where we are today...

1. SpaceX as the HSF leader with Boeing likely to reach operational status after SpaceX completes their base number of flights.

2. SpaceX's Raptor powered "Exploration Class" launch vehicle is not only going blow SLS out of the water from a cost and capability perspective but stands a real chance of beating it to orbit.

As someone who grew up reading old science fiction and read excitedly about Blue Origen and SpaceX in Popular Mechanics this is one horse race that I have been following closely.

Well here are my predictions for the future though I may be as wrong as everyone was eight years ago.

1. Barring major technical failure or political miracle SLS will launch through Artemis III, but will be irrelevant by the end of the decade.

2 Starship/Super Heavy will beat SLS/Orion to space

3 Elon will meet his goal of having SpaceX on Mars by 2026, as predicted in 2016, although humans won't till nearer the end of the decade.
