USAF has very little chance of a launch tomorrow but I'm still optimistic. Wind gusts could again be an issue but not knowing the exact criteria makes that hard for me to call. I'm also not sure why it would stop a launch more than 3 minutes out either :)

I think that's why they disabled the automated wind-detect-abort system for the last try.  Presumably what is important is whether a high wind gust occurs in the few seconds that the rocket is clearing the tower.  Measuring wind speeds during the four minutes before launch is just an imperfect proxy for that future knowledge.

Where can we find tomorrow's forecast please?

Bleh! 40% chance of good enough weather.

"Friday, an offshore wave will enhance coastal showers and increase the onshore wind. Due to the
depth of moisture expected in the atmosphere and the tighter pressure gradient, the probability of
violating launch weather constraints increased to 60%. The primary concerns for a 24-hour delay are
flight through precipitation, cumulus clouds, and liftoff wind."

Correct. Again I don't worry about rain or clouds because of the lack of time constraints. Winds are tough to say just because we don't know the specific criteria, it is confidential.

What we do know is (per PAO Mike Curie) that surface winds exceeding 20 knots from the N-NE violate LCC.  Sounds like this morning they were right on the cusp, with gusts (apparently) regularly exceeding LCC.  Real hit and miss stuff given they were even considering "manual override" for the auto-stop software allowances.

Gantry rolled back from Orion

Published on Dec 4, 2014
The mobile service tower is retracted from the Delta 4-Heavy rocket and Orion spacecraft for Exploration Flight Test 1.

Orion Post-Scrub News Conference

Published on Dec 4, 2014
A news conference was held at Kennedy Space Center, on Dec. 4 to discuss the launch postponement of the first flight test for NASA’s Orion spacecraft. The launch was scrubbed because of an issue related to fill and drain valves on the Delta IV Heavy rocket that teams could not troubleshoot by the time the launch window expired. The next launch window opens at 7:05 a.m. Eastern on Friday, Dec. 5. NASA Television coverage of the Friday, Dec. 5 launch attempt begins at 6 a.m. EST.

Why are they trying for Friday, why not scrub Friday and go for Saturday?  The weather looks a lot better for Sat, at the NASA briefing the guy said they could only do two tries in a three day period because they have to get more hydrogen.

At the briefing today the guy said the winds look better tomorrow because of their orientation (sideways to the rocket), but the forecast I see for Saturday looks real good.

Because they have the vehicle and crew ready.  They would have to stand down for crew rest on Saturday anyways, so that is when they will get the hydrogen

Thanks Poole Amateur, Chris, Bargemanos and clongton for your feedback. I don't usually stay up this late and it was getting a bit hard for me to concentrate. Thanks also to everyone who provided backup links for NASA TV. Also got up early this morning (and yesterday, forgot about the dateline) for VA221 so I'm burning the candle at both ends. Hopefully I'll be OK for tonight.

Go Orion!

That press conference was painful to watch. You'd think that there had never been delays due to weather or mechanical issues.  The flippant use of launch failure, valves needing redesign, etc was almost embarrassing. Congrats to PSLOSS for asking what may have been the only intelligent, pertinent question.

funny, Only saw the tail end of the press conference and came away impressed by the questions and the professional answers.   After seeing so many SpaceX "how does it feel" and talk about mice etc.  This was more like a real press conference should be.

Remember the one question someone asked about the cost of the next try if it would add to the such and such price.  Wish we would see more such questions of iss supply missions.

remember a press conference is there to educate  ;)

Boring. CRS is fixed price. Don't know about EFT-1 though.

CRS flights are fixed priced.  There are no "additional" costs for the next try.

EFT-1 is a fixed price but I bet there are some penalties or cost reimbursements between ULA and LM for delays.
