Personal Launch photos/comments
« on: 09/27/2007 01:17 pm »
I am opening this so we have a single thread for personal photos.  I was at the beach at 06:30, watching Dawn Break, waves and tide rolling in.  Nice clear weather, some clouds, the pelican demonstration teams in attendance skirting the waves, and a nice crowd.  Nice throaty roar from the booster when the sounds waves traveled to Cape Canaveral.

Will post my photos when I get home from work, but wanted to get this one open.

They couldn't have timed this launch any better.  It quite literally launched into dawn and straight towards the rising sun.

Atlas V Launch on 10/10/2007.  Nice Launch, though I don't get as close as I do for the Delta II's.  Might have to try Titusville for the next one across the river from the VAB.

Your spot on 528 is actually closer to 41 than Titusville is, by about a mile or a little more :-)

Correct on all.

They don't like people using those bleachers by the gate anymore. I always recommend the bend in the road for A5 and D4.

Ben, I wonder if you could tell us about your shot of last night's launch- without giving away any trade secrets, of course.  :)
What's intriguing is the star streaks look like there's maybe 20 or 30 minutes of exposure there (?) - then the rocket itself with maybe 12 - 15 seconds of its climb.
How'd you do that?
I can only guess it was one very long exposure on very slow film.... or assembled from mulitple images?

Very cool!

It's one image, started about 25 minutes before launch. The exposure captures the entire launch as well (from liftoff to Centaur); it just went directly away from us where we were so there is no 'arc.' You can just barely see a couple of faint streaks as it heads downrange towards the top to the left of the main ascent. Thanks!

My sole launch photo is a rare one, an SS-18 Dnepr flight from Baikonur:

Here's some shots I took when I visited Florida for the STS-117 launch.  I watched Atlantis go up from the KSC Visitor Center.

I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

THEMIS from Orlando.  Didn't catch any of the lower parts of the flight because the camera was dead.  By the time the batteries were changed it a bit late.

I was not originally planning to be there for this but since it was delayed a day I was.  Unfortunately we weren't able to get out to the Cape in time.

Still an added bonus to the vacation though!
