ISRO 75 Students' Satellites Mission

Indian Technology Congress Association (ITCA) is leading an effort to build and launch 75 students' satellites on the occasion of 75th year of Indian Independence. Their website mentions that satellites would be launched based on PSLV/SSLV availability between July and December 2022. However, it also mentions that NSIL/ISRO might decide to launch all satellites in a dedicated mission on SSLV in August 2022 :) Nothing seems to be confirmed yet.

The Mission aims to have students from various universities /institutions build and launch small satellites (SmallSats) into low earth orbit (LEO). It was envisioned 75 satellites to be launched to commemorate seventy-five years of Indian independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, 1947-2022), seventy-five institutions will launch their student built SmallSats.

The envisioned SmallSats are primarily CubeSats of 1U, 2U, 3U, and other configurations built with cutting-edge technology. Such SmallSats performance is comparable to larger ones based on earmarked payloads and applications. Furthermore, CubeSats with these configurations would use and have access to an extensive range of widely accessible COTS components as well as a variety of launching possibilities.

The aspirational and ambitious Mission 2022, which aims to launch 75 student-built satellites into orbit, has been well structured within a participatory ecosystem building on the combined domain expertise of competent and experienced Indian Space Engineers working in collaboration with leading global SpaceTech organizations. Thanks to the fervent initial backing of organizations/agencies from Israel, Russia, Serbia, and Japan, the mission has expanded today, with over 50+ countries contributing to build strong capabilities in academic institutions for the design and development of student built SmallSats.

Among the many mission objectives, the greater emphasis is on academia focusing on science-based education and experience-based learning, to foster an innovation culture in the country and train the future workforce in the ever-expanding space arena and allied sectors.

The mission's purpose is to educate students on how to design, develop, manufacture, integrate, test, launch, and monitor SmallSats through hands-on learning, besides serving in NewSpace research programmes and a workforce development initiatives. To that end, ITCA has devised a rigorous systems engineering and project management approach to ensure the successful deployment of SmallSats by students under active expert supervision.

The satellites are launched into a 400-500 km LEO orbit and are monitored by ground stations explicitly designed for this purpose at the respective institutions. Typical satellite mission applications identified by ITCA include weather monitoring, earth observation, communication, and the Internet of Things (IoT), geolocation and logistics, disaster management and rescue, etc.

At the end of the successful mission, participants will be able to compile a portfolio of signature space projects that will highlight their competencies.

3. Why the Cost of Building Satellite at EEIs are expensive when we [can] buy the imported systems/subsystems?
Cost of Nano Satellite/Cube Satellite’s Subsystems in Global Market from any of the heritage supplier like CubeSat shop or ISIS Space or EnduroSat or Pumpkin Space etc will normally cost Rs.2 to 2.5 Crores for 1U Satellite! Plus import customs duty in India need to be added @ minimum 30 to 60% of cost of each items! Plus Interface/Integration/Trouble shooting charges and/or charges of skilled manpower along with clean room charges per hour etc to be added! Hence, it is always prohibitively expensive and buying subsystems from market defeats the very purpose of learning objectives such interdisciplinary projects at Campus! More so, the bought-out systems and subsystems/ items are always liable for trouble shooting on our own is difficult and expensive and will not serve the academic/learning pedagogy!

The cost of Launch of satellite or your Payload includes the cost of deployer + mass of the deployer + mass of the satellite + cost of integration services/clean room charges etc. Based on our experiences with ISRO/NSIL/PSLV launch Services as piggyback co-passenger, NSIL may charge @ Rs.10 to 20 Lakhs per kg and also Rs.5 Lakhs per kg etc. Based on the Total Launch Cost of 1U Satellite will be arrived at for PSLV or SSLV as per the availability of launches during July -Dec 2022! Even, ISRO/NSIL is considering the dedicated launch of all 75 Satellites with SSLV during Aug 2022! We are yet to get the Quote for Launch from NSIL/ ISRO. Normally, the 260 gm Payload will cost one fifth of total launch cost of 1U Satellite (Approx. Rs.10-15 Lakhs). It may be free, if the Deployer and Launch Services provided to all 75 Satellites by ISRO-NSIL. Any changes to the current understanding leading to a change in the cost of launching, will have to be borne by the participating institution.

AzaadiSAT, which is part of this Students' Satellites Mission initiative, is the one being launched on SSLV-D1. It looks like other satellites are still getting ready and may be launched in near future.

A Ground Station cum Space Lab will be established on the premises of the School for students to monitor PriyamvadaSat as well as to harvest the data sent from it. A classroom model of the satellite will also be available at the Space Lab for the faculty and students to assemble/reassemble, as part of the standard lab practices.  Students of the School of Classes XI and XII will also be involved during the design and fabrication stage. A group of students and chosen members of the faculty will receive intense training from ITCA, such that they can be involved firsthand when the satellite is in the process of being conceptualized and designed.
