Robonaut interstellar travel possible?
« on: 01/20/2020 05:33 pm »
Are there plans to launch a 'Voyager' like craft with a Robonaut for a very long space-travel?
It could overcome life-time bound human travel and still make human-like discissions in adapting course, research for life on other planets etc, even when it takes 100.000 years...
Could it be possible?

Robonaut is a teleoperated tool.  Not an AI... so no.

Yea, Robonaut can perform tasks designed to be done by human hands.

The possibility of interstellar travel by Robonaut must take into account the fact that Einstein's theory of relativity slows down any starship controlled by Robonaut.

That's not what he meant. What meant is that Robonaut must have a human operator as it is remote controlled AKA "tele-operated". So any commands sent to it is affected by the lag all RF operated suffers from as the distance from Earth increases.

No. Robonaut cannot last 100,000 years. As others have stated, it's tele-operated. It can't operate at all once the craft is far enough from Earth, and it can't repair or maintain itself. Any machine sophisticated enough to repair or maintain itself indefinitely is also capable of making copies of itself. This is called a von Neumann machine. This is extremely advanced technology, and is not going to be practical any time soon.
