Starship Epoch Ecosystem Tweet History - UPDATES
« on: 02/03/2019 04:17 pm »
Purpose:  Maintain an UPDATES-ONLY crowdsourced reference with sequential history of Musk tweets related to the entire Starship Ecosystem and indexes to the tranches of tweets.  This will start from the "Mod to SpaceX Tech Build Tree" tweet.  Let's limit this to Musk tweets that add to the body of knowledge re: the Starship Ecosystem with perhaps ONLY THE MOST IMPORTANT retweets.

FutureSpaceTourist is generally maintaining the list and format of new tweets.

IF you are going to post here in his absence:  Please try hard to maintain the established pattern and sequence including subdividing tweetstorms, summarize the group, and copy/paste the Tweet Content for those with blocked access. First person to post any day's tweet (Tweet Post Day with some nod toward reconciling Timezone) owns that day's tweets.  This person will curate that day's tweets and any related sequential additions or corrections.  If additions or corrections are needed, either raise in a discussion thread or PM the curator for that day or the curators of the most recent "days" that bracket the tweet's date.  After an update, I will make the appropriate additions to the index and delete/repost the thread caveat notice.

November 7th 2018 Updates: Mod to Tech Tree Build

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1060253333116473344
Tweet Content  Mod to SpaceX tech tree build: Falcon 9 second stage will be upgraded to be like a mini-BFR Ship

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1060265065276825601
Tweet Content  Won’t land propulsively for those reasons. Ultra light heat shield & high Mach control surfaces are what we can’t test well without orbital entry. I think we have a handle on propulsive landings.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1060282495541727234
Tweet Content  No, we’re building a BFR dev ship to do supersonic through landing tests in Boca Chica, Texas

November 17-19th 2018 Updates: Delightfully Counterintuitive Pivot and BFR to Starship

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1063865779156729857
Tweet Content  Btw, SpaceX is no longer planning to upgrade Falcon 9 second stage for reusability. Accelerating BFR instead. New design is very exciting! Delightfully counter-intuitive.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1063867489543643136
Tweet Content  Radical change

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1064740713357750272
Tweet Content  Renaming BFR to Starship

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1064741356080222209
Tweet Content  Technically, two parts: Starship is the spaceship/upper stage & Super Heavy is the rocket booster needed to escape Earth’s deep gravity well (not needed for other planets or moons)

November 25-27th 2018 Updates: Materials, OML, Colonists, Timeline

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1066825927257030656
Tweet Content  Contour remains approx same, but fundamental materials change to airframe, tanks & heatshield

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1067428982168023040
Tweet Content  Engineers, artists & creators of all kinds. There is so much to build.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1067430108216979457
Tweet Content  A human landing on Mars is now not far away. I only hope the first wave of explorers will be poets & not real estate developers... How soon will the first group go to colonize Mars?  7 to 10 years[/b]

December 8th 2018 Updates: Metal Reveal, Pics/Fab Targets

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1071572534921900033
Tweet Content  The new design is metal

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1071578086418788352
Tweet Content  Fairly heavy metal, but extremely strong

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1071609875795333121
Tweet Content  Is this why we didn’t get a big technical rundown at #dearmoon or IAC this year? Yes

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1071610505406513153
Tweet Content  But cool pics of the demo Starship that will fly suborbital hops coming in ~4 weeks

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1071610949432356864
Tweet Content  Both, but demo Starship is being built now, whereas Super Heavy hardware will start getting built in spring

December 22nd 2018 Updates: Stainless Reveal

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076595190658265088
Tweet Content  Stainless steel is correct, but different mixture of alloys & new architecture. Unlike Atlas, Starship is buckling stable on launchpad even when unpressurized.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076606482332807168
Tweet Content  While there are some material similarities, Starship is very different from the Atlas design

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076607861952671744
Tweet Content  Yup. Actually, the only significant design element in common with early Atlas is stainless steel & we’re using a different alloy mix. I super [heart] 300 Series Stainless!

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076608579652616192
Tweet Content  I will do a full technical presentation of Starship after the test vehicle we’re building in Texas flies, so hopefully March/April

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076609328239374336
Tweet Content  For sheet/plate, at supplier made to our spec. For cast, in our Hawthorne foundry.

December 22nd 2018 Updates: SSMk1, SH, SL, SSTO

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076611280700530688
Tweet Content  We’re building subsections of the Starship Mk I orbital design there

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076612033011826688
Tweet Content  This test hopper is at full body diameter of 9m / 30 ft, just not full height. Super Heavy will be full height & diameter.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076612546793095168
Tweet Content  Cast ribbing? Coldformed at cryo

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076613555091234816
Tweet Content  Yes, but single stage to orbit with no payload is pointless. Add Super Heavy rocket booster & orbital payload is gigantic. Only need booster on Earth, due to deep gravity well & thick atmosphere. Starship alone on moons & Mars.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076614135138312192
Tweet Content  Starlink V1 on Falcon, V2+ on Starship. Basically, all future products will contain either the word “star” or “link”

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076615094086193152
Tweet Content  Seriously! We are just on the wrong planet for SSTO. Mars, no problem

December 22nd 2018 Updates: Raptor FFSC, SX500

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076616737020231681
Tweet Content  Yes. Radically redesigned Raptor ready to fire next month.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076618077301665793
Tweet Content  Yes, full flow, gas-gas, staged combustion. Will take us time to work up to 300 bar. That is a mad level.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076618886932353024
Tweet Content  You def don’t want electric pumps on a rocket engine! Raptor turbopumps alone need 100,000 horsepower per engine. That’s not a typo.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076684059827302400
Tweet Content  SpaceX metallurgy team developed SX500 superalloy for 12000 psi, hot oxygen-rich gas. It was hard. Almost any metal turns into a flare in those conditions.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1076686201061404672
Tweet Content  Our superalloy foundry is now almost fully operational. This allows rapid iteration on Raptor.

December 24th 2018 Updates: Active Cooling

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1077115129055956994
Tweet Content  Skin will get too hot for paint. Stainless mirror finish. Maximum relfectivity.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1077346382359322625
Tweet Content  Starship will look like liquid silver

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1077353613997920257
Tweet Content  Leeward side needs nothing, windward side will be activity cooled with residual (cryo) liquid methane, so will appear liquid silver even on hot side

December 25-27th 2018 Updates: Last EOY Details

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1077477602091257857
Tweet Content  No, Raptors must be shielded during atmospheric entry. Although, maybe not ...

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1078180361346068480
Tweet Content  How about the chances that Starship reaches orbit in 2020?  Probability at 60% & rising rapidly due to new architecture

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1078184288032415744
Tweet Content  Vacuum optimization will come with later iterations on BFR, at least according to his Sept. 2018 presentation. For now, Raptor SL or a medium-expansion compromise will do double duty on the booster and upper stage(s). Makes development dramatically simpler. Exactly

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1078185691475922944
Tweet Content  What was the trigger for the latest redesign?  Time. Although it also turned out to be dramatically better.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1078187280563560448
Tweet Content  How did switching the design so late lead to a quicker production? I will provide a detailed explanation in March/April

January 5th 2019 Updates: BFH and SS Details

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1081572521105707009
Tweet Content  Engines currently on Starship hopper are a blend of Raptor development & operational parts. First hopper engine to be fired is almost finished assembly in California. Probably fires next month.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1081573955591258113
Tweet Content  Good shot of @SpaceX Starship flight test vehicle being assembled in Boca Chica, Texas

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1081576707365064704
Tweet Content  Starship test vehicle under assembly will look similar to this illustration when finished. Operational Starships would obv have windows, etc.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1081662202124296192
Tweet Content  [1] It should look "better", but it won't have that perfect mirror look of the rendering.  And never will. [2] The hopper most likely will not, indeed. The actual starship however most probably will ;p  Exactly

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1081676911066017793
Tweet Content  Spiral-winding is great for uniform thickness. We used that for the Hyperloop vacuum tunnel. However, Starship skin thickness will vary considerably according to loads.

January 10th 2019 Updates: Full BFH Stack and Details

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1083252590689820672
Tweet Content  Will Super Heavy also be shiny as Starship? Yes

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1083567087983964160
Tweet Content  Starship test flight rocket just finished assembly at the @SpaceX Texas launch site. This is an actual picture, not a rendering.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1083568315656822784
Tweet Content  This is for suborbital VTOL tests. Orbital version is taller, has thicker skins (won’t wrinkle) & a smoothly curving nose section.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1083571402752573440
Tweet Content  Will it use autogenous pressurization? Yes (editorial:  Followup to VTOL post.
Believed to be about Orbital not VTOL hopper)

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1083571038619922432
Tweet Content  Will there be some kind of shock absorbers installed on the feet of the landing legs? Yes

January 16th 2019 Updates: San Pedro Pivot

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1085679367374524417
Tweet Content  The source info is incorrect. Starship & Raptor development is being done out of our HQ in Hawthorne, CA. We are building the Starship prototypes locally at our launch site in Texas, as their size makes them very difficult to transport.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1085680908177264640
Tweet Content  Teslarati is very thoughtful & well-written, but this stems from a miscommunication by SpaceX

January 22nd 2019 Updates: PopMech Article and Active Cooling

https://twitter.com/PopMech/status/1087708141226283009
Tweet Content  Elon Musk: Why I'm Building the Starship out of Stainless Steel http://popm.ch/qEtlMTy

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1087794886315819008
Tweet Content  When going to ~1750 Kelvin, specific heat is more important than latent heat of vaporization, which is why cryogenic fuel is a slightly better choice than water

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1087799667692392448
Tweet Content  Yes. Also, despite high outside heat, rapid water vaporization can counter-intuitively cause it to snap freeze & block cooling channels.
