The IRNSS launch has been delayed for quite some time. The original plan was to deploy the whole constellation (with 7 satellites) by the end of this year.

Do we know if this launch is still scheduled in Q1 2013?

Oh and has the navigation system's ICD (or something like that) ever been released?

ICD was finalized years ago but wasn't released yet.

ISRO is planning IRNSS-1 in May 2013 as per the latest news! It is supposed to be launched on new PSLV variant HP version (with improved 4th stage along with other improvements) that carries 2000kg payload. Pls refer.

I guess, this is still on papers as there is no news about this till now. So, we can assume, ISRO uses XL version for this launch (since payload weight is within XL range).

Thx

Just asking with enthu...How much is the payload gain if PSLV uses:

1. S200 for 1st stage (instead of S139)
2. S12 for 3rd stage (instead of S7)

I mean, a PSLV with the following config:
Stage 1: S200 + 6 S12 Strap ons
Stage 2: L40H
Stage 3: S12
Stage 4: L2.5

Any guess? Would that be around 1600Kg-1700Kg?

Thx

XL version cannot be used for placing IRNSS sat in 240x24000 km (GTO) because its max payload capacity is 1300 kgs for GTO (refer attached PSLVvariants pic) and lift-off wt of the sat is around 1400-1425 kgs (from various isro ppts). HP version on the other hand has the required launch capacity (1440 kgs to GTO).

The two spare IRNSS sats will be launched into the 19140 km circular (i = 64.8 deg.) orbit by the GSLV MK2c (4 stages with PAM-G being the fourth stage, refer meo mission and PAM-G-Hot test)

Yes you are right. I got it wrong from the attached slide. Or May be ISRO is planning the 2 spare IRNSS sats (apart from the 7 sats to be launched by PSLV) in the same 19100 km orbit?

Yes! You are right. I think it is the special orbit (not the payload weight) that mandates ISRO to use PSLV-HP (incl improved 4th stage with PAM-G) instead of XL version.

Thx

Confirmation of the delay by ISRO

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C22) flight delayed by a fortnight
IRNSS-1A, the first Indian Navigation Satellite, was scheduled for launch onboard PSLV-C22 on June 12, 2013 at 01:01 hrs. from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. IRNSS-1A Satellite has gone through all electrical checks and is ready for propellant filling. The PSLV-C22 vehicle was fully integrated and was undergoing electrical checks.
During the electrical checks of the launch vehicle, an anomaly was observed in one of the electro-hydraulic control actuators in the second stage. It has been decided to replace this actuator.
The replacement of the control actuator needs two weeks of activity at the Launch Pad and the Vehicle Assembly Area. Accordingly, the launch of PSLV-C22/IRNSS-1A is delayed by a fortnight with respect to the original scheduled date of June 12, 2013.

Speaking of the system, has the Interface Control Document (ICD) for IRNSS been released before?

After inducting the satellite into orbit maneuvers have to be done to bring the satellite to its final destination using LAM.  Even though ISRO has expertise in the same, need to be careful while position the satellite in right direction.

Flight profile and sequence of events from ISRO brochure
Final orbit inclination should be 29° (as per brochure text - 27° in the sequence of events figure seems to be a misprint -)

So apparently this launch will use the XL version of the rocket. I thought this would be the debut flight of the HP version with longer 1st and 2nd stages and higher performance upper stages. What happened to this version?  ???

Very fluid article! :) #TIL The strap-ons have different TIGs, and the FLP supports on pad assembly (Is this just for the final stage/payload?)

Doesn't happen often enough, but today I can watch a launch in relatively high resolution, on TV, rather than a laggy computer. \m/ :D

PS: Also, can someone quickly refresh me on the specialty of an air-lit SRB? I'm assuming the oxidiser isn't part of the solid fuel, and there's a ram air intake...

Webcast started

They first aired a documentary explaining the applications of the IRNSS satellite (highlighted GIS, geodetic, and distributed sensor networks), detailed some specifics: the 2 bands (personal, restricted), dual frequency system for position, velocity, time, 17 Range integrity stations, 4 CDMA range stations.

Navigation and station keeping data uplinked from MCF, Hassan and Bhopal, detailing the ISRO centre work divisions. Also mentioned the obligatory national-achievement plug: currently only two countries offering service: US GPS, and Russian GLONASS.

Currently airing the launch commentary from SDSC (and integration footage)
 - Launch window of 20 minutes.

And hamming up the user-applications. IIRC existing GPS radios won't be compatible, and we'd need industry to manufacture competitively priced receivers..

Kudos to the Indians for their technical achievements, but with GPS, Galileo, Beidou and GLONASS it's hard to see the need for another navigation system.

There we go, Chairman ISRO just mentioned new era of space applications. <Yelling>

Congratulations to the ISRO! I think it would be nice to have an article about the international agreement of GNSS to move to L band on CDMA. And how each international power is executing the move (Glonass-K and international correction stations) or deployment (GPS III, Galileo, COMPASS, IRNSS and QZSS). By 2020 we'll have four global systems with three extra augmentation systems in Asia!

Solar panel deployment confirmed (Phew.. that snap opening makes me flinch every time)
Satellite has power, and operating nominally.

GSLV director now kind of arm-twisted by Chairman into talking about the launch coming up in ~40 days.

LPSC director says they've delivered the indigenous cryo-stage to SHAR. Stacking (and I assume a lot of other integration work) in progress. He also sets a goal of delivering one cryo-stage every 6 months for future GSLV missions.

GSAT also at SHAR. Targeting possible launch on August 6th.

July 25th, Insat 3-D (Meteorological, 6 channel imagers, vertical humidity profiles etc.) from Kourou. Has completed all the tests at Kourou.
Targeting GSAT 7 (More communication transponders) dispatch from ISAC to Kourou on August 9, launch in 3rd/4th week of August.

Mars orbiter still targeting October 21st.

Work going on well on all.

7 satellites (didn't get all of them) before they get on to IRNSS 1-B and the rest of the constellation.

...and that's a wrap.

AS of now, they have planned 11 sats, 7 + 4 more

I remember the original plan was 7 (4 GEO + 3 IGSO), what is for the another four?

Backup + Augmentation

Ok, the augmentation are the three GAGAN satellites (or payloads), two of them are already launched, the remaining one will be up soon.

They are not exactly 7 satellites but 7 missions..
IRNSS-1A      Jul-1
INSAT-3D      Jul-24
GSAT-14         Aug-6
GSAT-7         Aug-3/4 week
MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission)   Oct-21
SPOT-7 (France)                  Dec
IRNSS-1B                            Mar

Yes, they said that.
Considering no major missions like Mars, GSLVs, Remote sensing in 2014, It is quite possible.

Exactly at 11.41 PM PSLV C22 standing around 44 metres tall and weighing around 320 tonnes, roared off, turning the dark skies bright orange.

I'm guessing that the IRNSS-R1A spacecraft will perform the perigee raising burns itself.  How long will it take until it is in a near-circular 20k orbit?

What's the procedure for disposing of the fourth stage? Will it have to remain in orbit until that decays or is there enough propellent on board to lower the perigee so repeated aerobraking brings it down more quickly?

From facebook.com/isro.org

That is an awesome picture. Really want them to start putting cameras on the LVs. Definitely for the GSLV atleast.. it'd be so useful for engineering analysis. Can't believe they haven't done so in all this time.

Perigee raising burns, as well as orbit circularising apogee burns. Don't know how long it'll take. They could initiate these burns after a delay as well, couldn't they - though there's probably no reason to wait.. I mean the thing is orbital after all (Aero-braking orbital decay notwithstanding).

What's the procedure for disposing of the fourth stage? Will it have to remain in orbit until that decays or is there enough propellent on board to lower the perigee so repeated aerobraking brings it down more quickly?

I don't think the fourth stage is going to perform any de-orbit burns. The rocket body from the SARAL launch is still in orbit. (n2yo.com)

UPDATE
July 08, 2013

Quote

Orbit raising manoevers completed with fifth Apogee Motor Firing (AMF) on July 06, 2013 at 16:57 hrs (IST) and performance is normal.

Satellite is in Geo-Synchronous Orbit (GSO) with 27 deg inclination at 44 deg E longitude.

Present orbital parameters are : apogee 35870 km, perigee 35484 km and orbital period is 23h 50m.

All the spacecraft subsystem are evaluated and functioning normal.

I just happened to read this blogpost (about station keeping at a defined longitude in geostationary orbit) a few days back. Applying it in the context of IRNSS, I'm thinking we're missing a trick in not exploiting the stable 75.08 deg E longitude. I know it's not a lot of delta-v, but the stable spot is RIGHT OVER US! Yes, the spot might also attract all sorts of debris, but at 36,000 km out, is there much debris at all? The kind that wouldn't cede to a relatively massive satellite?

Also, I found it pretty cool how much the seas can hide, and how rapid the terrain change is underwater. For example, the Mariana trench is at 142 deg East, but the 165 deg E point is an unstable one - dominated by the high mass-cons of the volcanic 'Pacific ring of fire'.

Atomic clocks on indigenous navigation satellite develop snag

Quote
In the NavIC, a constellation of seven satellites, one of the three crucial rubidium timekeepers on IRNSS-1A spacecraft failed six months ago. The other two followed subsequently.

Quote
A. S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, confirmed the glitch in the clocks but clarified that the satellite was otherwise all right, and the rest of the satellites were performing its core function of providing accurate position, navigation and time. However, without its clocks, the IRNSS-1A “will give a coarse value. It will not be used for computation. Messages from it will still be used.”

Quote
“There are some anomalies in the atomic clock system on board. We are trying to restart it. Right now we are working out a mechanism for operating it,” he told The Hindu.

The problem is only with the clock system of one spacecraft. The signals are all coming, we are getting the messages, everything else is working and being used, except the stability portion which is linked to the clock,” he said. A minimum of four working satellites was sufficient to realise the full use of the navigation system”.

Quote
NavIC has 21 atomic clocks on seven spacecraft. “How would the other clocks fare? Would ISRO reconsider the supplier of its atomic clocks? Such questions are not easy to answer. Generally any [space] hardware is an issue. We have to find ways of going around it,” he said.

Quote
The troubled IRNSS-1A spacecraft was put in space in July 2013 and has an expected life span of 10 years.
