Would this concept have worked? Was Saturn V really the best NASA could have done? Where would we be today if NASA followed through on Nexus, Sea Dragon, and NERVA?

Maybe. There wasn't anything really physically impossible about the design, but Kraft Ehricke wasn't always the most pragmatic engineer. If you really wanted to build it, I think it would be possible, but you'd need a damn good reason.

The reason for Nexus in 1962 was to loft Orion nuclear-pulse spacecraft in a single piece; with bomb-powered spacecraft not exactly pollitically correct these days, I'm not sure what demand there is for a 900,000 lb payload...

True heavy lift, and perfect for mars. So we would see it fly every other year.

I wonder what it would do in the off years...

I found that via Google.

Will there be a need for rockets that can loft 1,000,000+ pounds to orbit in the future?

1) As I was looking for EMPIRE art, I came across a few NEXUS illustrations at the SDASM Archives, Atlas Collection, all GD/A artwork from Sentovic. Note the typo Nexius ~ Nexus

2) The YouTube movie at another NSF thread Saturn V 2.0 - Convair Nexus was nice as well.

3) Then I wanted to check again GD/A63-0065 by Ehricke for details. I got the attached report from
https://uah.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16608coll1/id/20314/rec/1
a year ago or so, but the link is dead it seems. Therefore, attached.

I'd wondered if this was one for Hazegrayart but I see they have competition ;-)
