Some might say I should lighten up - that even NASA can be the target of humour - but this sort of aren't-we-clever: geeks can't ask a girl out humour is done far better on "The Big Bang Theory" without necessarily belittling the subject of the jibe.

Sigh... :(

I've seen this one. What really cracks me up is the name of the bogus NASA administrator - Andrew Giffin. Maybe whoever came up with this has been keeping track of what's been going on in recent years and doesn't like him.

Meh, Griffin can't possibly be belittled any more than he does himself by appearing on This Week In Space in his pajamas....
:o  I think I missed that one.

Least he wasn't wearing a singlet.

I noticed he said something along the lines of: I am a supporter of commercial space development, but I think the government should continue to enable space exploration by building rockets.

Doesn't building rockets like Ares impede the efforts of companies like SpaceX, by eating up a chunk of the market for LVs capable of delivering crew and cargo to LEO?

No because it was only meant as backup in case they were not ready.

Isn't it ironic that the "backup" booster would be ready years later than the ones it would serve as backup for?

And why should an organisation like MSFC, which according to Mike Griffin needed to relearn how to build launch vehicles, be given this task? And why would the bulk of the money go to this single inexperienced organisation instead of to multiple competing, and more experienced organisations?

Not yet proven. If Ares I funding hadn't been raided for RTF and it got the funds it was meant to in the first place it would be much further along. Also its design was purposely changed to have more commonality with its bigger brother which introduced more delay. It's not meant for ISS, that's just a byproduct that falls out of the design.

I see that he's a supporter of commercial space.  Is he also an athletic supporter?
Sometimes I just flat out don't get it.
