Boeing Delivers Advanced O3b mPOWER Satellites to Operator SES [Nov 13]

Quote
Boeing teams have successfully delivered the 7th and 8th O3b mPOWER satellites to SES. These satellites, featuring Boeing’s advanced software-defined communications payload, are being transported to Cape Canaveral for a planned launch in December.

“We’ve worked closely with SES from the start of this program, and we moved with pace to manufacture the latest pair of satellites,” said Michelle Parker, vice president Boeing Space Mission Systems. “We look forward to seeing the satellites enter service and continue to impress SES users.”

The O3b mPOWER satellites feature Boeing’s first-of-its-kind software-driven integrated payload array technology, providing adaptable connectivity and high-frequency re-use, a metric used to measure efficiency.

“With our O3b mPOWER system now operational, we are excited to bring these two additional satellites into orbit and bolster our constellation to continue delivering the high quality connectivity services required by our customers,” said Milton Torres, CTO of SES. “We’re proud of the work carried by our SES team, along with Boeing and other technology partners across space and ground segments, to bring the unique capabilities of our O3b mPOWER system online.”

With the ability to generate over 5,000 fully steerable beams, the satellites offer unparalleled flexibility, allowing SES to dynamically allocate bandwidth and power to specific regions or customers as needed. This means users can have fast, reliable internet whether they are on land, at sea, or in the air, enabling seamless connectivity for applications like video streaming, remote work, and critical enterprise operations.

Boeing continues production, integration, and testing of the remaining O3b mPOWER satellites, with plans to deliver the next three in H1 2025.

SN Boeing ships first two redesigned O3b mPower satellites, Jason Rainbow, November 13
Quote
Boeing said Nov. 13 the satellites with redesigned power modules were sent via truck from its facilities in El Segundo, California, and are due to arrive at Cape Canaveral in Florida next week for their December SpaceX launch.
<snip>
The seventh and eighth satellites were set to launch last year before efforts to redesign power modules on future O3b mPower spacecraft delayed the rollout.
<snip>
To achieve the constellation’s original performance expectations, Boeing is building two more satellites beyond its initial 11-satellite O3b mPower contract.

In an earnings call Nov. 7, SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh said the pair of upgraded satellites slated to launch next month will add a “meaningful increase in much-needed incremental capacity where we have more demand from customers than we have available supply to support them today.”

He said the next three satellites are due for launch in mid-2025, followed by the final pair at the end of 2026.

“From 2027, we will have triple the available capacity and we’ll have a powerful constellation with seven fully capable satellites plus the initial six impaired satellites as spares,” he said.

I was just thinking that the spacing between SXM-9 and this launch is perfect for this launch to also be from LC-39A. 🤔

Then, I found this update today:

SES’s seventh and eighth O3b mPOWER satellites arrive at Cape Canaveral
3 Dec 2024

SES's seventh and eighth O3b mPOWER satellites have arrived at Cape Canaveral where they will be readied for launch by SpaceX in December.

Both satellites feature redesigned payload power modules and will join the first six O3b mPOWER satellites already in operation at medium earth orbit (MEO). The two additional satellites will bolster the second-generation MEO system to continue delivering high-quality connectivity services required by customers across multiple market segments, at scale.

Cross-post; my bold:
Ben Cooper's Launch Photography Viewing Guide, updated December 6:
Quote
The next SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch a Starlink batch from pad 40 on December 8 at 12:10-4:10 a.m. EST. A Falcon 9 will launch the next pair of O3b mPOWER satellites for SES from pad 39A on December 12 at 3:55-5:55 p.m. EST. A Falcon 9 will launch the next GPS satellite for the U.S. Space Force from pad 40 on December. A Falcon 9 will launch the Astranis MicroGEO mission on December. A Falcon 9 will launch the Thuraya 4-NGS communication satellite for the UAE on December. A Falcon 9 will launch Firefly's Blue Ghost lunar lander to the moon on mid-January.
Noting that the GPS launch, in listings that are generally in chronological order, remains at SLC-40 before the Astranis launch.  Circa December 12?

Also noting that discussion in the launch thread is that the GPS SV may not be SV10; perhaps SV07 or 08?

Which first stage will be used for this launch? (semi-rhetorical question)

Falcon 9 first stages are now cleared for use up to forty times for non-crewed launches, although that number is apparently more restricted for Cargo Dragon or Cygnus than these other payloads.

Available first stages, with UTC date of most recent recovery:
(1072.2   Jun 25
1086.2    Jun 25   Starlink 12-5 one of these two for Starlink 12-5)
1085.4    Nov 7     GPS III-7 (speculation: held for Dec GPS?)
1077.17  Nov 17
1073.20  Nov 18
1069.21  Nov 21
1080.14  Nov 25
1078.16  Nov 27
1083.7    Nov 30   (maybe)

Edit December 16: It's new B1090!
