Getting through this article. Been held back a bit checking into this GPC-4 review (complicated stuff), but the interesting angle is the issue may have caused by Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). It's on the list as possible causes and you've seen the pre-failure photos with the light show.

Interesting stuff.
