ISS Update. GPC-4 update:

Doesn't happen very often. Everyone now and then you get a surprise. Team handled it very quickly.

We don't know if there will be any impact yet. First thing in the morning there will be some troubleshooting to gain some data and see if we can recover the computer.

So we've had Elton, REM and now Sir Paul as A-listers. Who the heck are we going to get for the last few missions?

Sounds like nobody reformatted Atlantis after STS-132 and she's mad.  ;)

Glad all is good, that's two GPCs that have had trouble now, but they're both back up and running.

Glad to see this on The Daily Show because that viewership is probably the most apathetic demographic when it comes to American Exceptionalism and manned space exploration.

I do hope Jim Lovell was in on the joke because, otherwise, that was pretty disrespectful.  And the bit with the little boy in the astronaut suit was hilarious but also a little sad when you think about it.

per MSB, transfer is right on timeline, couple of hiccups were the reason why not ahead any more, 70% complete on transfer expected on the timeline, will have some down time, discusses GPC 4 issue configured as Systems management machine for environmental control and antennas error code was failed to quite (stopped) master alarm, crew spent 30 minutes moving functions to GPC 2 and turned of GPC 4 so slept in 30 minutes, CDR and PLT ran troubleshooting by dumping memory from GPC 1 and then GPC 4, the GPC 4 then worked correctly. No smoking gun right now.

GPC 3 and 4 are now both in sleep mode, will stay in config for a few shifts. Once review data dumps may reveal root cause but GPC 4 has been recovered.

Also broken latch on middeck locker for LiOH canisters. Will need to work on it to transfer canisters to ISS.

Tomorrow will be more transfer, repetition of the same theme.

Post by: Ronsmytheiii on 07/15/2011 03:04 pm
GPC 3 healthy GPC, nominal config for entry will have all 5, 1-4 will run PAS software redundant to check each other, GPC 5 performs same functions with different software, assign each to drive flight critical bus which link the computer with mechanical systems, four strings/buses with associated computer. All 5 will be up for landing

Philip:  Failure signature for GPC 4? Frequency, seen before?

A: Nothing in telemetry, failed to quit out of the blue.  Very infrequent failure, second bona fide of this type of GPC. GPC on STS-9 failure was phased out, only time with this type was on Atlantis on GPC 4 on STS-71, not the same GPC though.

Locker that is broken, entire panel fastened to floor with fasteners, will loosen those fasteners and will fix the latch.

on GPC 3, will see how it performs on undock and evaluate for use on landing.Pretty confident wont have switch tease problem again, but will have procedure ready.

Know 3 and 4 failure separate due to different circumstances (3 with switch tease, 4 while crew sleep) but dont know failure cause until dump, but separate signatures.  One failed, the other failed to quit. Cautiously optimistic for healthy system.

Question on storage.

Failed to halt, like when close lid on laptop goes to sleep
Sailed to quit, computations stopped in unrecoverable manner so need data dump

GPC 4 mostly like STS-71, GPC 3 more common

Marsha wants to know what could cause shorter mission, if lost 2 for MDF, 3 for next landing opportunity. If had another problem with another computer would look very hard. Issue with GPC 3 know issue, GPC 4 not so much but both have ability for redundant set.

Flight rules for victim of transient?  In absence of known cause, if were no software error have specific buses that would be allowed to control (string 4, chosen for hardware connected) String 1-3 are more critical so dont want it controlling it.

None of the computers are down, just have a few leans.Every issue a major one till understand it. Biggest worry is software failure. Expect all 5 GPC's for entry pending data dump analysis.

Impact of not having all 5 GPC's, benefit of having more than one computer to controlling bus strings, can assign particular bus and then monitor each other.  This prevents failure, if do not have GPC 4 string 4 would be assigned to another GPC and would pick GPC with greatest failure tolerance.

Problems have slowed crew down, because ahead of timeline before issues are right on the timeline.James Dean want to know the mass on Rafaello but cant say until tomorrow. Extra mass in MPLM due to extra day, will be filled to about 100% and will be able to do some science/samples back on orbiter with extra day.

Question on Typhoon heading to Japan, not know at this time.

South Atlantic Anomaly and the GPC 4?  With no other cause, treat GPC as suspect and would not assign it to critical buses. GPS 5 with backup software would not be used, use 1 and 3 for GNC for fly around.  For entry would look close to nominal string setup.

If transient, GPC 4 would not be considered failed, have not changed mission plan due to failure only affected sleep time.

One hour to crew wake up. I assume we're into the Lady Gaga league going on previous wake ups. Bono/U2 is a no brainer for one wake up, but who'll be the rest if they've already had Sir Paul, Elton and REM.

It'd make my day if Till Lindemann woke them up - literally - with something from Rammstein. Not going to happen ;D

Hmmm, Rolling Stones are still big in the US, Mick Jaggar could be one. Madonna - doubt it. Duran Duran with Planet Earth could be a good one, or Ordinary World - better song - and big name.

Still no idea who'll do the final one!

Glad to see this on The Daily Show because that viewership is probably the most apathetic demographic when it comes to American Exceptionalism and manned space exploration.

Really? Perhaps in the fact of American Exceptionalism, but manned space exploration, space exploration and science in general are quite up their ally, from previous coverage and the like...

Do you remember the Colbert threadmill? That is really the same audience...

Liked the piece, would love to have seen some more coverage.

I watch the Daily Show regularly but I wouldn't call myself apathetic to any of this. Guess I could retort with some sort of Fox news comment but it wouldn't accomplish anything. I will say that my enjoyment of the Daily Show may have more to do with demographics. I'm a NYC metro area jew, so I get a kick out of Stewart's gag. Unfortunately, NYC and it's environs are lacking much in the ways in direct ties to the aerospace industry. If I want to immerse myself in all things space, it means going on the internet here or making a pilgrimage to places like KSC or NASM. Locally, there used to be big contributions being made on Long Island and there still are some north and east of here in New England (MIT territory). So if the audience is anything like me, the perceived apathy may just be the miles that separate us from NASA infrastructure (one reason why I'm excited about Wallops taking on a larger role...getting closer). If it politics you're after, what the liberal town of NYC lacks in aerospace is made up by the liberal town of LA, which has great aerospace institutions. I imagine that they make up a large portion of the Stewart audience too and are also very proud of their local technical industries.

Let's not leave out the last half or third of every one of Stewart/Colbert's shows when they bring in the guest. Usually an author and at times it is someone who has written about some of the things that we discussed on this site. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson quickly comes to mind, and he's not apathetic about anything. I'm currently reading Wired for War, about robots, including some applications in space, after being turned on to the book from an appearance of the author on one of these two shows.

BTW, I found the bit in the OP to be silly, along with the Lovell interview. But if there was any chance that Lovell would be offended, I doubt Hanks would have participated. For a Hollywood guy, his interest in space, and American Exceptionalism/Superiority and all that seems fairly sincere.

STS-135 Flight Director Update coming up next.

Courtney Mcmillan says 78% complete on transfers.  Focusing on getting MPLM ready for return.  Treadmill work scheduled, will do troubleshooting on it (gyros and vibration isolation system).

Sandy Magnus has air sampling and work with JEM RMS scheduled.

Work on spacesuits - talking about contingency EVA plan for shuttle (if needed), resized one spacesuit for Rex and another for Sandy.

Will get crew to unpack transferred items and get them in their final locations.  ISS crew will try to use transfer time while shuttle crew packs up MPLM.

I'm not sure why it bugs me when folks say things like 'it's great that so&so took time out of their busy schedule...' in relation to the wake up calls.  It's the other way around.  I think these are great, and I know it's being respectful, but those people sing songs for a living.  We as a society 'celebrate' the wrong people.
Something that I give the President (someone who is truly busy, regardless of our politics) credit for is that he recognized that and thanked the crew for taking time.

PMM activation complete.  Complex passing south of the equator smack dab over the middle of the Pacific.

Orbit 1 is on duty and Stephen Robinson is Capcom.  Moving 5 tons of items to stock ISS for the next year or so.  Data Processing System officer reports they're analyzing GPC 4 issue, no cause identified but could be radiation or a transient.

Moving into orbital sunset.  GPC 4 will run for 7 hours to test it out.  Ferguson and Hurley will try to fix the latch to the air revitalization systems.  If they can't do this they have a backup procedure to get to the lithium hydroxide canisters to install them for the free flight period.

Makes perfect sense.
Woman's football (soccer) is nowhere nearly as popular in Europe as it is in the U.S. of A. There are hardly any women's teams on this side of the Atlantic. It is considered a man's sport. I would not be surprised if the U.S. of A. ends up as the winning team.

So much good work being done by the astronauts hauling all that equipment back and forth in and out of the Sation.

FIFA rankings - USA are 24th (they've been higher and are an improving team for sure):

Same here. Perhaps the only spaceflight soundtrack more epic, or more fitting, would be the one used during the Discovery Channel documentary: When We Left Earth. I always wished someone would put that music to the last mission, but this will do just fine :)

Nothing at fault with the subject matter, it's getting people to see it that's the problem.

Then maybe we need to attract a Fox executive who'll "accidentially" play that video, one of the ascent highlights videos, or one of the amazing MaxQ videos in the middle of American Idol, or something ;)

Speaking of which, we've not missed the debut of the STS-135 Ascent Highlights video - the one which started off via a SE&I guy on youtube, but now a NASA TV production? They are always special.

Next one will be 1:30pm Central. Again, if you are new to Shuttle, cancelled media briefings are partly a result of a mission having no problems. So it's a good thing, not a "Oh my, why did they cancel" as I know some people thought during a previous mission, thus noting.

I'm going to head off and write up a status article for Atlantis.

Brandi tends to do a lot of controller interviews so everyone keep an eye out and don't be afraid to post in the thread.

Josh on the education event at 5:09 a.m. CT:
"Yet another milestone for us.  This will be the final education event we will ever do onboard the space shuttle, of course on board the space staion it will continue, but you're talking about a history that goes back to Christa McAuliffe who was going to be the first teacher in space.  But education and events with schools has always been something that we have strived to do and taken very seriously to get students interested in space and science and mathmatics and engineering.
So tomorrow yet another milestone on this STS-135 flight as we do our final event with a school on board the Space Shuttle."
Good stuff.

Watching the specials about 30 years of shuttle, it remains with me when I see the astronauts looking a little grayer, a little older, yet the orbiters look as pristine and as brand new, like they just rolled off the line… “Forever young…. “

That's good, as much as I bet SpaceX PR will be rushing some e-mail of outrage on the "don't know" part, as much as there will be some irony on that come 11am MDT Monday.

Getting through this article. Been held back a bit checking into this GPC-4 review (complicated stuff), but the interesting angle is the issue may have caused by Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). It's on the list as possible causes and you've seen the pre-failure photos with the light show.

Interesting stuff.
