Hi!
Veeery nice work!   :D

I've got one, too.
But this one's a regular decal. As you can see, I've assembled the shuttle with gears, so I can show it without the SCA.

Anyway, did you notice the remaining parts? The last photo.
Did any of you run into them, aswell?
What's up with those? I mean, I can imagine it's about the opened shuttle version, but why haven't I got any instructions on that? Can you guys help?
Nor were there any instr. on building the shuttle with gears. I had to imagine that also.

Waiting for a reply.
Thanks a million!

P.S.: It's not 100% ready!

Hi Ktulu,

these are components for the Payload bay of the orbiter.

BTW, the configuration of the model is however different from Kit to Kit,  what kind of Kit did you use for building the shuttle orbiter?

Maybe I can help you, I have here a PDF construction manual of the Revell Kit 4911: Space Shuttle Launch Tower with Space shuttle, External tank and Solid rocket boosters. You'll find on pages 19-21 drawings for the installation of the payload bay equipment.

I also have found the PDF construction manual of the Revell Kit 747 SCA & Space Shuttle, which is unfortunately very poor for building the orbiter.

Well, thanks especially for the first one. I'll try to open the shuttle (now, as it is already glued together), and fit the parts in the payload bay.
Hope I won't tear things up...

The second manual is the one I used to build it. Ich habe den Kit aus Innsbruck gekauft, während eines Urlaubs.

This is my collection (10 days from now I'll get back perhaps with my father's collection, which is 1:100):

So be very careful when opening the payload bay doors, so that you don't do damage, what you might afterwards repent.

Thanks Ktulu and roma847.

The parts in the last picture are for the Spacelab module in the payload bay.  You don't need them for the 747/shuttle display unless you want to open the payload bay doors.

Alternatively you could build the Spacelab module and put it in another shuttle if you want to build another model that would be on a stand by itself to simulate being in space.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Now hanging in my office:

Some comments:
* Thanks to Bubbinski for advice.

* Making models is much easier now than it was three decades ago.  Heck, I was even able to properly apply decals, something that was always a huge frustration as a kid.

* The mounts for putting the shuttle on top of the SCA are worthless in this kit.

I flew on SOFIA four times.

Looks good, pretty cool to see it hanging in the office.

Yeah those mounts aren't too good.  They were something I was fretting about to the very end.

Bubbinski, You did a great job building this!

I actually got to see Enterprise fly over JFK last year aboard SCA 905.  It was an amazing sight.

BTW, can you post a picture of your 1/72 stack that appears in the background of some of the pictures?

Mike.

Thanks Mike!

Here's the 747/shuttle and the 1/72 shuttle stack finished in December 2010.

Hi Bubbinski,

you have a nice Space Sideboard in your room there!

Such a 1:72 stack would even appeal to me too ...

Thanks Roma!  If you build a 1/72 stack in the future I look forward to seeing the result. :-)

Another "I haven't done this for 30 years" question.  For those who have built shuttle stacks, what's your advice on the timing of painting parts vs. gluing parts (in other words, which parts should I paint before gluing, and which should wait?).
I flew on SOFIA four times.

I'd glue most parts first.  Assemble the orbiter, fuel tank, SRB's.  Then fill in seams and spray with primer.  Leave small assemblies like engine bells for last, even after the decals.  (Paint engine bells separately).

Thanks!  There are some more pictures of it in the original space modeling thread here, I'd need to dig up the thread and pages.  That thing took 9 months to do off and on and when I'm done with my 72nd Saturn I'll try to put the things side by side (no guarantees).

Great build!  I am glad that Revell Germany has reissued this kit.  I also found some after market decals and attachment struts for the kit.  I wish the was a 1/144 747SP so I could build SOFIA!
