Building the VAB picture thread
« on: 11/26/2005 01:22 PM »
Always been facinated with this huge building and following on from the other 'building' thread about the STS, I thought I'd do one for the VAB.

I'm on a lunch break at work, but have some images at home, so I'll add mine later. Wanted to open it out to people on here to post some in the meantime.

I'll try and get some sort of order here...people can add more as they have them.

Wow, that ground level shot really shows how flat the terrain is there.  Seems they could use a levee or two, just in case.

It had to be flat and just above sea level because the Saturn V stages were hauled in by barges. Levees would be a barrier between the turning basin where the barges came in and the VAB. The same is true today for bringing the ETs in by barge.

The first stage in construction of the VAB was dredging the barge canal and using fill material to create the sites for the VAB, the crawler way, and the launch pads. There are some pictures at:

That's an engineering problem that can be solved with floodgates over the crawlerway and barge access road.  VAB's rated at Category 3, a storm that seemed quite rare in the '60s, but is not so rare now.

Too expensive?  Ask the people of New Orleans what's too expensive.

Nice contruction pix, by the way.
