Hot Wheels on Mars: Mattel to land NASA's Curiosity rover on toy store shelves
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-080112a.html

Mattel, Inc., makers of the die-cast line of Hot Wheels toy cars, is ready to release the car-size Curiosity as its latest 1:64 scale miniature in September. The Hot Wheels "Mars Rover Curiosity" set is part of Mattel's assortment of 247 toy cars for 2012...

I still have the Pathfinder / Sojourner set sitting on a shelf at work, and was so disapointed that the MERs didn't get a model.  I'm definitely buying one.

Ditto. This time I'll have to get two. One to play with and another to keep packaged.

Very nice.

Maybe it's not too much to hope that after MSL is on the ground they'll come out with a Mars Rover family collection - Sojourner, two MER's, and the MSL.

One can dream at least.

If I had the time it would be fun to try to create a Lego MSL kit:

Stephen Pakbaz, an engineer who was involved in some of the design and testing of the actual MSL spacecraft at JPL, did just that — recreating the rover in 1:20 scale: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/3431

If 10,000 or more people cast their support behind that particular model, LEGO will consider producing it as a commercial model (it has received 780 votes of support since Nov. 2011).

Yes there was a model of the MERs. You even got an inscale basic model of the lander which could easily be modified to be more realistic. I was always meaning to go to town and modify the toy but never got round to, but I've seen examples which have been very well done.

Awesome. I tried to vote, but it requires a Facebook or Twitter account.  ???

Lego used to let users of the digital design program order custom kits of the parts for models they've created, although for a definite price premium. Apparently they've stopped doing that, which is very unfortunate.

I'm already supporting.  I'm surprised it's not doing better in the standings. :(

Really? I thought I signed up without giving them my fb account. Hmm.

Just like SpaceX and the Falcon 1, Lego found the LDD program to be unprofitable -- or at least, a smaller market than they expected.

Alright. Fess up. Which one of you clever snipers just beat me on this?

Congratulations if it was an NSF member.

I guess I'll have to look around for one of the 1/18 die-cast models instead.

Awesome - after being shared on a few high-profile sites like Reddit, they reached their goal.

Here's a snippet of the Lego team's response (look under "Official LEGO Comments" for the full response):

What a cool Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover model and a very timely LEGO CUUSOO project! You've built and presented the model in a good size that looks accessible and playable. We really like the Sky Crane as shown with the transparent flame pieces, too.
...
A "LEGO Jury" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand.

LEGO may make Mars rover Curiosity toy after 10,000 fans vote
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-081912a.html

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover took a giant leap this weekend toward becoming an official LEGO toy.

Early Saturday morning (Aug. 18), a do-it-yourself model of the car-size, six-wheeled rover that is now on the Red Planet received its 10,000th vote of support on the LEGO CUUSOO website. The model of Curiosity, which features a working "rocker-bogie" wheel suspension, was designed by a mechanical engineer who helped build the real rover...
