Automatic Cargo Vehicle Progress M-15M is flying to the ISS

At 16:50:24 Moscow Time an automatic transport cargo vehicle Progress M-15M was launched from the Baikonur Launch site.

The purpose of the launch is to support further in-orbit operation of the International Space Station (ISS) in accordance with the Russian commitments under this project.

The main objective of the mission is to deliver more than 2.4 tons of various cargoes to the Station, that are required to continue the ISS mission in a manned mode, and provide living and working conditions for the crew.

The vehicle was inserted into a parking low-Earth orbit with the following parameters: 51.63 deg. inclination, 193.68 km minimal altitude, 256.52 km maximum altitude, 88.7 min orbital period.

The onboard systems of the vehicle operate normally.

At the launch site, the vehicle prelaunch processing and launch operations were performed under the direction of the State Commission (chaired by the head of Roscosmos V.A. Popovkin). The Commission was basing its decisions to implement the vehicle processing and launching phases on the statements of the Technical Management headed by RSC Energia President and Designer General, V.A. Lopota.

According to the telemetry data and ISS crew reports, the space station onboard systems operate normally. The station is ready for docking with the vehicle.

The vehicle docking with the station is scheduled for April 22, at 18:41 Moscow Time.

During the course of its mission, Progress M-15M will perform the unusual procedure of undocking from the ISS, spending two days in free flight, and then re-docking to the ISS in order to test a new Kurs antenna. Kurs is the system that enables Russian vehicles to automatically dock to the ISS without any human intervention.

Anik has sharp eyes.

He realized that the cargo load for this mission was low, only 2356 kg per TsUP; apparently, the 250 kg prop from PAO that is normally allocated as ISS cargo was not included in the manifest because, according to Anik, it is to be used for the re-docking with ISS, using Kurs-NA.

anik, I am reading your (excellent) article in NK N°06-2012 about the Progress M-15M's mission. You give a quiet good explanation on the maneuvers done in order to test the fast-rendezvous profile.

But I don't understand one thing : since Progress M-15M has made all these early maneuvers, why the other "standard" maneuvers were also accomplished ?

But I don't understand one thing: since Progress M-15M has made all these early maneuvers, why the other "standard" maneuvers were also accomplished?

The aim of Progress M-15M autonomous flight was not only to test one of variants of fast-rendezvous profile, but also to dock to ISS in two days. The first aim was carried out during four maneuvers on orbits 1-4. The second aim was carried out after that. Progress M-15M has performed fifth maneuver on orbit 18 and five-six maneuvers on orbits 32-33 for docking on orbit 34. Progress M-16M will perform a fast-rendezvous profile with four maneuvers on orbits 1-3 and five-six maneuvers on orbits 3-4 for docking on orbit 4.

MEDIA ADVISORY: M12-135

NASA TELEVISION TO AIR SPACE STATION CARGO SHIP MOVES AND TEST

WASHINGTON -- NASA Television will broadcast the move of a Russian
cargo spacecraft at the International Space Station and the
demonstration of a new docking system beginning Sunday, July 22.

NASA TV coverage of ISS Progress 47's initial undocking starts at 4
p.m. EDT, July 22. Progress 47 will undock at 4:27 p.m.

Russian flight controllers will command the resupply ship to undock
from the space station's Pirs compartment in a test of an updated
docking system that will be used for both Progress and Soyuz human
spacecraft in the future. The new automated rendezvous system, known
as Kurs-NA, will use a single antenna, which will allow four others
to be removed. The Kurs-NA-enabled Progress and Soyuz spacecraft will
have only three antennas, half as many as the current versions.
Kurs-NA also will use less power, improve safety and possess updated
electronics.

Progress 47 arrived at the station in April. After it was emptied of
its cargo, the space station crew filled it with trash for disposal.

NASA TV coverage of the Progress' re-rendezvous and docking will begin
at 9:15 p.m. Monday, July 23. The ship will re-dock to the station at
9:57 p.m.

Coverage of Progress 47's final departure from the station begins at 2
p.m. Monday, July 30, with undocking set for 2:11 p.m. It then will
be commanded to re-enter the atmosphere and burn up.

The next Russian cargo spacecraft, ISS Progress 48, is scheduled to
launch Wednesday, Aug. 1, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Expedition 32 Commander Gennady Padalka of the Russian Federal Space
Agency and his five crewmates, including NASA astronauts Suni
Williams and Joe Acaba, will monitor events as the Progress 47 tests
unfold.
