A full suited sim with the whole crew. We had a few emergency situations, including a very realistic cabin fire. http://pic.twitter.com/tx2iAhq2

Luca Parmitano flying high

7 September 2012
ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano is set to fly to the International Space Station in 2013, and his mission came a step a closer with the unveiling of his mission name and mission patch today.

Luca will spend six months on the International Space Station on Expedition 36/37 under an agreement with Italy’s ASI space agency and NASA.

The Soyuz TMA-09M patch designs shares elements of the two earlier Soyuz mission patches that Fyodor Yurchikhin participated in (TMA-10 and TMA-19): a bright blue rim featuring the crew names with a dark blue border and a central field featuring Earth and spacecraft in yellow and orange.

The white and light blue streaks underneath the Soyuz symbolize that this is the fourth mission to the ISS for Soyuz commander Yurchikhin; the first being on an American spacecraft during STS-112.

This design shares one element with another patch: the ISS is taken from the patch of Expedition 37, which Yurchikhin commands.

Designed by Luc van den Abeelen, Dmitriy Shcherbinin and Fyodor Yurchikhin.

Luca goes EVA

ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano will perform two spacewalks during his Volare mission, which starts May on the International Space Station.

As Expedition 36/37 flight engineer, Luca will conduct maintenance tasks, replace a camera mounted on Japan’s Kibo module and retrieve science payloads. One of his spacewalks will also prepare for the arrival of Russia’s Multipurpose Laboratory Module.

The dates for Luca’s spacewalks are not yet set, but are expected around early July.
