"New" LK Lander on Display in Tambovskaya Oblast
« on: 07/27/2011 05:12 am »
http://www.vesti.ru/only_video.html?vid=350538

I was reading the NK forum, and in the section on space museums, someone posted about this place in Tambovskaya Oblast. The video shows that there is a lot of stuff on display at the museum, including a row of Yantar descent module shells.

And, a previously unknown LK.

No, I don't know where Tambovaskaya Oblast is.

Well, I know the chief city is Tambov, which is in the direction of Samara from Moscow. There seem to be all sorts of goodies in the museum.

Well, cool!

Okay, so let's add a little information for those who don't know. The Yantar is a high-resolution spysat. I think what we are seeing in the above image is the front end of four of them. Presumably we're looking at the barrel through which the camera looks. Think of it kind of like a telephoto lens.

We know from Russian cutaways that the barrel of the camera system goes down the length of the descent module and protrudes beyond it: presumably retractable.

Cannot recall whether these are re-used and if so how often, as were the Zenit descent craft routinely.

No, I don't know where Tambovaskaya Oblast is.

An "Oblast'" is a medium-big administrative district and is usually, but not always, translated as "Region."

The caption on the second picture says "Russian Space Forces: Admission into the Holy of Holies"
"I can’t tell you which asteroid, but there will be one in 2025," Bolden asserted.

I watched the video and there is a brief shot through some lens tubes lying on the ground next to the Yantar. You can see that there's glass inside.

Anybody know what the other spacecraft in the segment are?

There is an APAS-75 docking adapter in front, with a Vertikal capsule behind, but the large white satellite with the antenna is unknown to me - maybe a Luch, maybe an OKO variant, I am not sure.

Oh - it looks like there are 2 different white spacecraft in the back, the front one may be an OKO, I don't know what the rear spacecraft is. From the angle in the photo, they look like a single spacecraft.

I'd hazard a guess that this is part of the Tank Museum in Kubinka, but would like someone to verify that.

Can you do a screengrab of the lenses that they show at 1:02-1:04?

Cool. Thanks.

So we see four Yantar bodies, and at least two Yantar lens barrels...

That's a lot of hardware to be sitting in a museum. The only thing that makes sense is that they cut the program short while they still had a lot of stuff left over and just sent it off to this museum, which is little more than a nice warehouse. Intriguing.

Very interesting. We can even do a bit of technical intelligence from the picture of the two guys (who give scale) standing next to the lenses. It looks as if the diameter of the optics is about 50 cm, maybe a little less. That, combined with the known perigee height of the Yantar orbit (ca. 200 km) lets the best resolution on the ground be calculated. Turns out to be in the 20 - 30 cm range.

This is the same LK that's shown in the Energia history "big book" and on the National Air and Space Museum's "Space Race" website.

It's nice to finally know where it's been all these years!

I wonder what they have been doing to it over those years... radiator plate missing, and why are the two landing legs obscured...?

Novosti Kosmonavtiki posted two photos of this LK:

The back legs are there, but it looks like it's backed into a corner.
