You're going to hear this from many different people, but I'll go ahead and say it: don't think of this as a trip to see a shuttle launch, think of it as a Florida vacation that happens to coincide with a shuttle launch. Best to have backup activities that you can fall back on, and the Orlando area offers plenty of them.

Jorge,

Thanks for the info on delays because of cryo boiloff -- that was the detail I was looking for.

And yes, I have heard/read that comment before and I've already made the conscious decision to leave the big camera gear at home so I can watch the launch rather than be concentrating on a viewfinder and running the camera.

But at the same time, this particular trip is all about the space content for us.  We had originally planned to do the Smithsonian this year, but realizing that we had a chance to visit KSC while the shuttle program is still running we decided we make what efforts we could.

The fact that there should be a launch while we are there is indeed icing on the cake.  We have the luxury of scheduling flexibility, but not unlimited time.  So when it came time to change the flights, I figured why not do what I could to make sure we were still in town for the launch even if we didn't get to be on-site.

Worst case scenario -- I still get to sit on the beach in the sun for 10 days rather than suffering overcast and rain in Oregon!

Thanks again!

Very quick question:

I think I'm right in saying that the switch from EST to EDT will take place at 02:00 EST (03:00 EDT) on 04/04/10?

So the countdown will start (around 09:00 04/02/10) in EST and launch will occur (06:27:?? 04/05/10) EDT.

Is that right?

Will the countdown be, in effect, 1 hour shorter, or will they compensate?

Has that happened before?

What will the equivalent British times be (my head hurts!)?

The US goes to EDT on March 14th this year, so the entire countdown will be in EDT.

And Europe switches on March 28th, so time zone difference with UK during countdown will be the same as it is now.

Now that the Rollover is schedule for today, I will finalize my plan. Got the rental car and hotel done. Had to cancel previous airline ticket ($$) unfortunately. Rebooking this week. Staying until April 11. If I miss it, I have plan A - B and C in place. I'm a glider pilot and will fly at Seminole Lake (Still too cold an too much snow here.). Is anybody on this group meet before launch.??

Ok. As with the last six missions, I will offer a NSF dinner the evening before liftoff. I think this would make dinner on Easter Sunday since liftoff is planned for Monday, April 5 at 06:27 EDT. In about a week and a half -- once the IFA process is complete on Endeavour/STS-130 -- I will post details on the dinner. For right now, just be thinking if you'd like to join the dinner.

I'm coming over from England (2nd to 9th), but I'm bringing 2 non space geeks with me.  Are they welcome at any eats?

Also, planning to book (not hotels 'cos we'll have a car and don't mind slumming it a bit plus we plan to watch baseball in Sarasota on the 3rd) as soon as she's safely on the pad, does that sound right?

I'll see what I can do for the dinner if it is on Sunday.

I'm being picked-up in Orlando by Gator Tour for the Causeway. On their web site they say that the pickups will start April 4th 10:30 - 11:30PM.

Anybody knows a good cheap motel (if there is such a thing) about Titusville or CCB? I also have ticket for a launch from the Visitor Centre if there is a scrub. I might stay in the area on Monday.

Hi!

One question: Is a laptop allowed at the causeway or not? I have a ticket from Gator Tours.

Bought one for my trip and want to check my photos when I have to wait for the launch.

Thx,

I don't see why it wouldn't be.  Chris G will know for sure.

Marius,

I've been on the causeway for two recent launches. Have seen many laptops. Good luck.

Never had a problem bringing one...Security at the Visitor's Center might want to see it powered on though, so make sure your battery's charged.

Thx for the answers.

Last year (STS-127 / 12.7. attempt) our drinking water was removed by security from the bus.

Dan, One suggestion if your taking Gator Tours and want to attend the night before NSF dinner, I believe Gator Tours also picks up at the Titusville Kmart.  Check with them so you don't have to drive back to Orlando to take the bus back to KSC.
