rsmath - we set up a whole new thread for this since it's kind of (maybe?) big news. Any thoughts on what carriers will do?

The biggest thing I see happening is NASA gets dropped from many pay tv outlets as it might not be worth the expense of an investment in a HD-capable receiver to continue downlinking NASA TV.

If cable/pay tv keeps NASA, I can see SD continuing to be used because HD receivers can downscale to SD resolution internally for those cable/pay tv operators who want a SD version of what they are downlinking.

Thanks rdale for linking over to the other thread where the change is being discussed.  I posted my comments in this over there.

After seeing a clip on the nightly news, I thought I'd snag the HD video file feature of northern lights and parts of the U.S. and Canada at night and post it here.
I included both labeled and unlabeled parts that were fed on NASA TV HD.

I did no processing into a H264 HD video.  It's a full-bandwidth MPEG-2 transport stream grab from NASA TV HD.  About 640MB in size.

Two parts that need to be combined into one using HJSPLIT, the DOS copy command, or other means.

SpaceX Dragon launch to the ISS.  HD launch from about 30 mins to launch through the launch replays.

H264 AVC format, about 2.4 GB in size.

Six parts that need to be combined into one using HJSPLIT, the DOS copy command, or other means.

For those of you who have DirecTV, NASA TV has been moved to Channel 346.

I had no idea that this was happening until I turned the tv on a little while ago and found a Disney channel on 289....  :o
