Hello all,

I've been looking and looking at the beautiful 3D models NASA has posted.  Has anybody actually managed to get any of them printed?  We might be getting a 3D printer at work, and I'd love to see the results, or hear any lessons you might be able to share.

Thanks,
Jeff

Some of the 3D models come out of NASA, are reworked and given out on Thingiverse.  Take a look at the list above and see.

Now for some of the experimental 3D designs.

Right now multi-color is one of the projects many are working on.   It’s very early, but you can see the direction.

Two Color World  (Earth)

Giant Hollow Two Color World
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:15658
145mm tall. The inside is hollow to save plastic because it's so massive. There's two versions, one totally hollow and one with a support column through the center which it turns out isn't really necessary.

Looking good Manboy....and lots of interest now that the time is available.

Someone got a run done on it.

Sadly they printed off an earlier version of the model that I wasn't too happy with.

Sorry to hear that.....I have a good idea for you if you wish to get the "good" copies out there.

Put another copy from your 1st file on thingiverse, its called Derivative.

Put the title something like Fine detail Dragon.

If you have extra time it also might be a good idea to break apart that one big file into small Stl files.

1) Dragon stl
1) Solar panel stl etc.

It makes for much easier printing...

Under the thinking of much easier printing I found myself with extra time this holiday to print up a dragon.   Only problem was that I only had was I needed to cut into parts.

When cutting the SW used its Intelligence saw the hole (distance) between the Dragon & trunk and Meshed them.

After a sec of disappointment I found the design very interesting.  The contrast showed how much time and effort went into this design by Manboy.  Tons of details.  So I had another experiment.....I kept the file and printed it.  Its only in the early AM will post it later.

I found that I really like the design!

This pic is just for you ManBoy....

Normally a printer experiment of mine would not be shown in public.   This one was to do super fine, light weight internals (only air inside).   As you can see some decent detail in the print, you can see the details of problems printing as well.  Enjoy this one is for you!

I believe I'm officially finished with my model. As a reminder it can be found here. These are the different versions that are available.

You did a fine job on the model and posts on thingiverse.  Enough there to provide many hours of printing joy

Live 3D Printing demo

We have a new printer that we are in the process of calibration;   we had our first day with the new printer operating on Thurs. Jan. 17th.

Current plans have a window of late this afternoon (Friday Jan. 18th. thru Sat. pacific US time)    Next in the planned calibration process is to print a “model”.   We have chosen Manboys SpaceX capsule to be printed.

Also expect video problems as this will be my first time broadcasting to Ustream @ http://www.ustream.tv/channel/threed-printing

next the stl file has to be sliced into layers so the plastic can lay detail and build up one layer at a time.

Yesterday we worked on the video cam, not much room inside the SD2.  The Solidoodle 2 is an uber cheap $500 printer.  We purchased a few of them for quick models.

update: having problems with video output

main issue is to get this item printed and tested.   System does record output so i can record and fix the broadcast or upload issue later.

After some testing the cooling system of the printer was not working right and was shut down.  Three of the fan blades look to be broken, work goes on to fix the issue.

Nice thing about 3D printers, sometimes others have the same problems and design fixes.  This is the case with the fan blade broken.  Its replacement will be printed today.

See the space applications of 3D printing?

Update:

New fan printed ( see pics)
While I was working on it, found a much stronger upgrade for the extruder, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:40711/   The parts were printed, and atm are in the process of being installed and adjusted. (pic )

Video system fixed and tested this morning.

Should have everything ready for a Live broadcast when time permits.

Check back for updates....

We just had two software upgrades to incorporate into all our printers.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to test the new software and features on one printer we used for making "parts"

I sliced and tested part of the Dragon Print.
More to follow....

Edit: we had a live feed to a google hangout today and had much success with the model until the last 45 min.  Some pics shortly......we plan on redoing the print again in the near future.
