"Titan IIID" A Titan with *four* boosters
« on: 12/08/2007 03:48 pm »

United Tech proposed what they called the Titan IIID in 1965, using four UA-1205 or UA-1207 solid rocket motors with modifications. Payload started at 37,000 lbs to LEO.

UTC studied clusters of 120-inch solids, upt to, IIRC, about ten of 'em for a first stage, with a pile more for upper stages. McD looked at a Space Shuttleconcept that used such a cluster for a first stage. So this "Titan IIID" is actually pretty tame in comparison.

Of course, there was also this:

and...

A number of companies examined nailing 120-inch boosters to the side of the Saturn Ib, UTC and Chrysler in particular. NASA appears to have been quite interested for a while.

I noticed a 200+ page book on Skylab. The local community college library had a simlier on with the name "Dr. Von Braun" hand written on the cover. I went it a couple of years ago to look for it and it was missing...

Nothing other than what was in "Aerospace America" back in the day, sadly.
