... to prevent a gap in surveillance on activities in the geosynchronous belt...

Ahh, a gap, of course, we are back in the time of gaps.

So, my thought was, when will Dr. Strangelove turn up to start a race, but then....

Quote from: sheldon
As other nations show their commitment in investing in systems capable of harming our satellites, we are committed to investing in space surveillance assets like GSSAP that will directly enable safe operations, protect our spacecraft,...

So racing is already done.

Of course it makes we wonder how good such a spacecraft can be used for target acquisition and tracking. I mean, purely for the sake of target acquisition and tracking, nothing more to come.

You can be cynical all you want, but I would point out that the USAF is the primary organization that tracks objects in space and it shares much of its tracking data with the rest of the world. You are welcome.

Actually, it doesn't any additional benefit in that area.  Any "weapon" would still have to have the same type of systems.

Jim, I think a better answer would be, the US has never demonstrated or developed a kinetic intercept capability at GSO altitudes.

This is the fourth competition under the current Phase 1A EELV procurement where there has been more than one competitor for national security space missions.

The AFSPC-8 mission has two identical Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) satellites, known as GSSAP 5 and 6. AFSPC-8 would launch in 2020 into a geosynchronous orbit.
