SES-15 Arrives at Kourou for Launch Onboard Soyuz

Written on 15 Mar 2017

First SES hybrid satellite with high throughput capability to serve leading inflight connectivity and entertainment providers; also carries WAAS payload to augment the GPS

LUXEMBOURG, 15 March 2017 -- SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that the SES-15 satellite has arrived at the European space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, in preparation for its launch by a Soyuz vehicle in April 2017.

Designed and manufactured by Boeing, SES-15 will carry a hybrid payload, with additional Ku-band wide beams and Ku- as well as Ka-band High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capability. The satellite will be equipped with an electric propulsion system for orbit-raising and in-orbit maneuvers. The satellite will also carry the Wide Area Augmentation Systems (WAAS), a US government-funded hosted payload to augment the Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

SES-15 is the first SES hybrid satellite to be launched and is equipped with 16 Ku-band transponders (36MHz equivalent) as well as a 10 GHz high throughput payload. The all-electric satellite will operate at the new orbital position of 129 degrees West and will serve North America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

SES-15 is the first of three hybrid wide beam and HTS satellites, delivering optimized and flexible global coverage for major global IFC/IFE providers who have made significant, long-term pre-commitments. The satellite will also enable other traffic intensive data applications such as government, VSAT networks and maritime.

In the Arianespace Launch Schedule, it says that SES-15 is launching atop the Soyuz-STA Fregat-M variant.

Any sources confirming that?

SES-15 is readied for its May 18 liftoff on Arianespace’s workhorse Soyuz launcher

Payload preparations are advancing for Arianespace’s upcoming launch: a Soyuz mission to orbit the SES-15 telecommunications spacecraft from the Spaceport in French Guiana next week.

The satellite has been installed on its payload adapter, which will serve as the integration interface with the Soyuz launch vehicle. This mating activity occurred in the Spaceport’s S1B clean room facility.

SES-15 will be the 40th satellite launched by Arianespace for the European-based SES satellite operator, and it marks this long-time customer’s first use of the Soyuz from French Guiana.

The satellite has an estimated liftoff mass of 2,302 kg., with the workhorse Soyuz launcher’s total lift performance set at 2,447 kg. – taking into account the payload integration equipment and other hardware.

Next week’s mission is set for a May 18 liftoff in the morning hours from the Spaceport’s Soyuz Launch Complex (ELS) in Sinnamary, French Guiana, delivering SES-15 into a sub-geostationary transfer orbit. The mission is designated Flight VS17 in Arianespace’s launcher family numbering system, signifying the 17th Soyuz liftoff from the Spaceport.

ROSKOSMOS.  SOYUZ-ST-A LV TO LEAD SATELLITE TO GEOSTATIONARY ORBIT

 05/11/2012 2:05 PM

On May 18, 2017 at 14:54:53 Moscow time the launch of the Soyuz-ST-A carrier rocket from the launch complex 371SK13 of the Guiana Space Center (Kourou, French Guiana) is planned.  The Russian carrier rocket and the Fregat-M upper stage will bring the SES-15 telecommunications spacecraft into geostationary orbit.

In accordance with the schedule for the preparation of the launch vehicle and the space head (KGS) on the technical and launching complexes, it is planned to complete the assembly of the UGC before May 12.  Based on the results of the work of May 13, the commission will consider the issue of the readiness of the carrier rocket, the upper stage, the spacecraft, the head fairing and ground technological equipment and will decide on the removal of the launch vehicle on the launch complex on May 15 and its installation in the launch system.  Within three days after the launch of the launch vehicle, work will be carried out to prepare the launcher for launch.

The preparation of the Soyuz-ST-A LV and the work of the ground-based technological equipment supplied by the Russian side is provided by specialists of the ROSKOSMOSA enterprises.  Launch of space vehicles from the Guiana Space Center will conduct joint Russian-European launch calculations.

The customer of the launch is the European company SES, one of the world leaders in the field of satellite telecommunications.  Spacecraft SES-15, manufactured by Boeing Satellite Systems, is designed to provide telecommunications services in North America and Central America.

 ***

The Guiana Space Center is a European cosmodrome located near the town of Kourou in French Guiana (department of France in South America).  Its location near the equator provides a 15% payload advantage compared to the launches in the east direction from the US spaceport at Cape Canaveral and 40% at launches from the Baikonur cosmodrome.  Since the beginning of the 70s of the last century, the SCC is used to launch spacecraft by the carrier rockets of the Arian family.  The spaceport is used in the interests of joint European space programs.

The Russian-European project "Union" in the Guiana Space Center "began in 2003, when at the governmental level it was decided to launch the Soyuz rocket from the European spaceport in French Guiana.  Within the framework of the adopted decisions, a number of intergovernmental agreements were signed that laid the legal basis for signing contracts for the creation of the ground infrastructure of the Soyuz launch complex, the manufacture and shipment of the Soyuz-ST and the Fregat upper stages in the Guiana Space Center.  In 2005, the construction of the launch complex for the Soyuz-ST LV began, and in May 2011 an official ceremony was held to transfer the launch pad to the European Space Agency and to the operator of the space center, Arianespace.  The first launch of the Soyuz-ST LV took place in October 2011.  Annually 2-3 launches are carried out both in the interests of ESA, and in the interests of commercial companies.

Flight VS17: Second mission to geostationary transfer orbit for Soyuz from the Guiana Space Center at the service of SES

May 11, 2017 – For its fifth launch of the year, Arianespace will use a Soyuz launcher to orbit SES-15 – the first all-electric geostationary satellite for the European operator SES.

This will mark the second mission in 2017 to geostationary transfer orbit performed by Soyuz from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana.

The launch will be from the Soyuz Launch Complex (ELS) in Sinnamary, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

SES-15 is the 40th satellite to be launched by Arianespace for the European satellite operator SES, following ASTRA 5B – orbited by an Ariane 5 in March 22, 2014.

As the first hybrid satellite in SES’ fleet, SES-15 will offer a mix of wide beam coverage and high throughput (HTS) capacity. The satellite will provide additional Ku-band wide beams and Ku-band HTS capability, with connectivity to gateways in Ka-band.

SES-15 will serve the thriving aeronautical sector and will enable other traffic-intensive data applications such as government, VSAT networks and maritime.

Positioned at the new orbital location of 129 degrees West, SES-15 will offer extensive coverage over North America, Mexico and Central America, stretching from Arctic Alaska to the South of Panama and from Hawaii to the Caribbean.

SES-15 was built by Boeing in El Segundo, California using the all-electric 702SP platform, and it is the 53rd Boeing-built satellite to be launched by Arianespace.
