One of the backup voice links is basically "call 'em on Skype" ?

I'll share what I posted on Facebook with the link to this article.

"NASA has backup procedures for everything. 99.9% of the time, we never hear of these because they're not needed - a true testament to the NASA workforce. But we have those backup options regardless. And they do come in handy - like on Sunday when Mission Control Houston momentarily lost command and voice comms with the International Space Station.

All is fine. And there was never any danger because of the comm loss as MCC - Moscow was still in contact with the Station.

The take away lesson: REDUNDANCY!"

Reminiscent of the shuttle days of NOT having them on station/orbit into a new year.

Ah, software...

(still finishing up the last of my Y2K supplies...LOL)  :)

Dissimilar redundancy, since they lost both primary and backup links (presumably similar or identical devices).

If this was most other sites the story would have included the use of the word "disaster" in it ;)

I wonder, would an Iridium satellite phone work on the ISS? Of course the ISS is all metallic so the signal can't get inside, probably some sort of external antenna would be needed. Still if you have an external antenna, would it be possible to use such a phone? I imagine the speed at which the ISS moves could be a problem.

This “leap second” issue is a little scary i think

NASA is not the only one that had an issue with this (if it turns out to be the case)

Sydney Airport
LHC
LinkedIn
Mozilla
etc.

Here is some of the reactions just after the leap from around the world (none ISS related)

Heh. Like the Russian in Armageddon?

"100, ok. 150, ok. 200 - disaster for space station" :D

yes, because the Ku video system is a fairly seperate systems so it is possible that a problem can take out one and not the other.  When the Ku is down no one freaks as much since we don't normally use that for voice.  Of course there is not as much Ku coverage and since there is no voice over it we have to use a trick to signal the crew.

Probably I have missed a big event : what means "USTO" since the USOS has no thrusters ?? It means "ATV thrusters only", since ATV is part of USOS ?

It means US GNC is controlling using Russian thrusters.

One of the most confusing terms in the ISSP - messed up a LOT of people over the years.
