Is the feed choppy for anyone else? It's stopping every few seconds for me, which makes it hard to watch.

Took off, flew and successfully landed.

Yeah, I can't get anything out of this feed. Thought it was just me.

Great coverage guys. Let's do what we can. Hat tip to A_M_Swallow for keeping a good eye on these tests.

They are claiming they had a good flight, so that was a fast turnaround and a success. Nice!

a. They have had many problems with that live feed from KSC via JSC over the last few months.  The recorded videos should be out in a few hours.

b. Thank you.

A couple of brief screen freezes but otherwise fine. In the darkness the most impressive part was the landing with the close-up view of engine exhaust. Also the engine bell (nozzle?) glowing in IR.

The lander choose to land near the centre of the landing pad this time.

Project Morpheus Free Flight 14

Published on May 29, 2014
The Morpheus/ALHAT team successfully completed Free Flight 14 (FF14) at the KSC SLF on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, Bravo's 12th and ALHAT's 5th free flight -- and the first ever night flight. Initial data indicated nominal performance of all vehicle systems. The ALHAT Hazard Detection System (HDS) performed well, but identified a safe site just 0.5 m outside the conservatively established limits around the center of the landing pad. ALHAT then navigated the vehicle in closed-loop mode through the entire approach, with the vehicle taking over navigation during the descent phase of the trajectory when ALHAT was already dead-reckoning. Had less conservative position error limits allowed ALHAT to continue to navigate to landing, the vehicle still would have landed safely on the pad.

The team overcame a few preflight issues, including a failed ignition due to a non-critical temperature limit exceedance, which was corrected for the successful second attempt.

Nice flight. I do hope they have continued budget to iron out the few remaining kinks and prove out the system to a very robust level so it can be definitely included in future missions.
I wonder if they are flying a flight-weight ALHAT system there already, i.e. something that would be applicable for a lunar or martian lander, but its probably still more like a prototype.

Morpheus Completes Nighttime Flight Test

Published on May 29, 2014
The first free-flight test of the Morpheus prototype lander at night was conducted May 28 at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 98-second test began at 10:02 p.m. EDT with the Morpheus lander launching from the ground over a flame trench and ascending more than 800 feet. The vehicle relied on its autonomous landing and hazard avoidance technology sensors to survey the hazard field and determine safe landing sites. Morpheus then flew forward and downward covering approximately 1,300 feet while performing a 78-foot divert to simulate a hazard avoidance maneuver. The lander descended and landed on a dedicated pad inside the test field.

I didn't realize that the current set of Google Maps, Morpheus is shown being set up for a on of it's test flights.

The next flight is planned for about November 18, 2014.

The ALHAT optics are being enhanced with a Doppler LIDAR able to determine velocity with great precision relative to the ground.
