That's a rediculously powerful rocket, but I'd like to know what engines they were using. 30 makes me think they simply didn't have the power.

The Russians did not have the capability to manufacture large engine bells, for reasons that are not quite clear.

There were, by the way, four N1s launch and all exploded within the first two minutes.

Damn, so that one we see launching on the video was on the way to an explosion. That would have been some bang!

Hi,

The N1 first stage had more power than the Saturn V. - 10 million lbs of thrust! But its second and third stages were also fuelled by LOX/Kerosene and not LOX/Hydrogen so the N1 as a whole could not launch a payload as heavy as the Saturn V could to the Moon.

In 2001 a couple of American amateur model rocket teams organised a fly-off between models of the Saturn V and N1. Although the Saturn V was not completed, the N1 was and flew. This site has info about the contest -  http://www.moonrace2001.org/n1_top.shtml
as well as more detail of the N1 specifications and history - http://www.moonrace2001.org/n1_history.shtml

Imagine the power it would have had if they had tested and aligned the engines correctly, rather than just having the engines put their energy into shaking the craft apart.
