My God that was awful. Range didn't seem to take it out. Hit the ground big time.

Hope everyone is ok!
I could be wrong but I don't think that the Russian rockets use explosives for their flight termination systems, they just turn the engines off.

Yeah, I kept waiting for for the destruct command, but it just kept going further and further down and then I realized it was going to hit big time.

I hope everyone is okay too. Probably the worst failure I've seen broadcast live.

Remember there are usually no destruct charges in Russian vehicules. But they didn't even get to the engine cutoff command, agreed.

Ok folks, who's got the video of that. I thought the camera had fallen over at first. She sure swung on both directions violently before losing it.

There was a puff of orange early on just as the deviation started.  What was that?

^ I wouldn't mind getting that either

That wasn't good. Actually scared the living daylights out of me. Hope everyone's okay

That is usually seen on the Proton launches.

That could be the tetroxyde purge that occurs shortly after launch. Once the swaying began there were some other puffs, although that may have had to do with the propellant sloshing or the guidance failure.

It also rolled quite heavily once it started going horizontal.

The feed looks to be down

They "did a Sea Launch" and pulled the feed, but we sure got everything. I'm worried about those Russian engineers who turn up at the pad 60 seconds after launch.

Really worried.

Honestly, the *one time* I decide to go get dinner instead of watching the launch…

…are they likely to be safe about this? I really hope they're out of danger as much as they can be right now. They have my thoughts.

Just another failure during federal launch. Poor Proton, poor ILS. :(

The exhaust plume looked pinched on one side (compared to a normal Proton launch), and several of the pictures here show something orange trailing away from the aft end, even after it started down.

Oh my goodness  :o

I couldn't get the feed working.

Hopefully somebody recorded that.

Thanks for the great screenshots. Not a good day for Russia  :(

Based on the huts visible in the last frames of the webcast, can anyone hazard a guess as to where it might have fallen?

I'm checking Anik's reference for pad 81/24 but I'm not getting oriented yet: https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=46%C2%B0+4%2715.38%22N,+62%C2%B059%275.11%22E&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=46.070939,62.984753&spn=0.003528,0.01075&t=k&om=0

Well what could I say? I have checked the previous records - while such crashes are quite common early in Proton's career (there's one video on L2 showing a Proton crashing in the same way it did today - in 1969), the last time a Proton failed in first stage powered flight was in 1982. So this is not common at all.

An RD-253 failure would be most shocking.....

There was a failure in 1969 (one of eight Proton-K failures that year) where a Proton fell close to the pad - I don't think it got as high as this one though. Incidentally it was from the same pad.
On that occasion it was caused by an engine failure, but from the stills of this launch it looks like they were all still burning, however the fallout could be similar - the 1969 failure contaminated the launch complex with toxic propellants, rendering it unusable for weeks. As far as I know there were no casualties from that failure.

For all its recent failures, I'm struggling to think of the last time a Proton failed during first stage flight.
