Last unflown space shuttle fuel tank transits Panama Canal

Published on Apr 28, 2016
Two modern engineering marvels crossed paths this week in Central America, as the last unflown space shuttle external fuel tank passed through the Panama Canal during a multi-week voyage from New Orleans to Los Angeles.

I was wondering if this passage caused any sightseeing along the canal?  Any crowds turn out to watch it??

An interesting historical note:
Quote
It is the fifth time in history that a shuttle fuel tank has traversed the famous shipping canal. Four tanks were shipped from the Louisiana factory to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in the 1980s for polar-orbiting shuttle launches, then were shipped to Florida once the West Coast pad was cancelled by the Pentagon after Challenger.

Which ETs were pre-shipped to Vandenberg?

The four external tanks staged at Vandenberg were ET-23 (to which Enterprise was mated), ET-27, ET-33 and ET-34. ET-23 flew on STS-27; ET-27 on STS-34; ET-33 on STS-36; and ET-34 on STS-31.

So, if those first 4 tanks were returned and flown, wouldn't this be the 9th time an ET has gone through the canal?  How else would they get to Florida?

I so wish that we had STS operations on both coasts, launching both to the East and to the South.

ET-94 is well past the Panama Canal now.

Space shuttle external tank bound for L.A. museum plays role in sea rescue
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-051416a-external-tank-ocean-rescue.html

The crew of a sunken fishing boat has a space shuttle external tank to thank for their rescue.

Three Americans and one Mexican were on the Maximus, a charter fishing boat, when it sank off the coast of Baja California on Thursday (May 12). Fortunately, its crew was able to make it safely onto a life raft to await the next ship to come along and pluck them out of the Pacific Ocean.

As it just so happened, that next vessel was the Shannon Dann, the towboat transporting NASA's last existing flight-qualified space shuttle external tank (ET) for the California Science Center.

The Shannon Dann is now passing Ensenada, only about 60 miles south of San Diego.

She's within range of terrestrial AIS receivers now; this one seems to be getting the most updates:

ETA for the entrance to San Diego Bay is 6AM; looks on track to beat that by several hours.

Looks like she's in San Diego.  Speed zero for the last 2 hours.

Looks like the Shannon Dann and her cargo docked around 3:30 this morning.  A couple of flyover shots from this morning below.

Tugboat hauling space shuttle tank makes dramatic sea rescue

The Planetary Society

Published on May 15, 2016
On May 12, the sportfishing vessel Maximus sank off the coast of Baja California. All four passengers were forced to abandon ship in a small, orange lifeboat. The closest ship was the Shannon Dann, a tugboat towing the last unflown space shuttle external fuel tank to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
