So the story is he was being extorted for a lot of money by powerful fellow inmates and wasn't compliant enough though he had paid them once?

That doesn't sound very plausible if the implication is that those powerful inmates decided to do this entirely on their own without instructions from more powerful non-inmates.

The cause of death isn't just incompatible with suicide, it's also incompatible with the implied story that the inmates were just trying to "lean on" Evodokimov and scare him into complying. He didn't die from injuries received in a beating or torture, he died by being stabbed in the heart and having his throat slashed.
