I wonder what's causing the external camera view to brightly 'pulse' in contrast and brightness?

Yes, I thought so too: but what prompted my question was that I knew the sunrise was coming, but I've never seen them take that long to adjust. The Sun might also have been apparently moving behind/through the solar arrays for some moments, causing some 'eclipses.'

The Comms with Whitson seems to be pretty 'ratty'?! :(  Or is it just what they're relaying over NASA TV?

Peggy is setting up the empty ORU bag where the cover on PMA 3 will go.  Good glove and HAP check.

Nah, it's the camera's Automatic Gain Control (AGC) that is most likely broken. The AGC makes sure that the CCDs doesn't get overexposed (think back to what happened on Apollo 12 when the Vidicon tube on the lunar EVA surface TV camera got burnt out by the sun). Seems like they took manual control of the AGC which stopped the cycling of the iris.
