SPACEWALK FOR THOMAS PESQUET
16 December 2016

ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet will be the 11th European to perform a spacewalk when he ventures outside the International Space Station next month.

Lasting up to seven hours on 13 January, its goal is to ensure the power supply of the International Space Station from the 2500 sq m of solar panels.

The Station commander, Shane Kimbrough, will lead the spacewalk, accompanied by Thomas.

At NASA’s mission control in Houston, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano will direct the duo as lead communicator – a recognition of ESA’s expertise in Station operations.

Luca is an experienced spacewalker himself, undertaking two sorties during his six-month mission in 2013.

Luca will guide the pair in space through their complex tasks, offering radio support.

Two January spacewalks are needed as part of an upgrade to replace older-technology batteries with newer lithium-ion designs. Batteries store power for supplying the Station as it flies through Earth’s shadow.

Adapter plates that arrived on Japan’s HTV cargo ferry this week will be moved to an external platform by the Station’s robotic arm before the spacewalk.

When Shane and Thomas head outside, they will collect the adapters, install them, and reattach the batteries.

Preparations for these complex operations started well in advance, Thomas noted on his Facebook page: “We have started well in advance to prepare for the spacewalks of January. It is a lot of work to service the suits and get them ready, get familiar with the choreography and prepare the tools and equipment. Not even mentioning the thousands of hours of work for all the personnel on the ground.”

More detailed information about the spacewalk will be provided on the Proxima mission blog and in a NASA media conference on 4 January.

NASA Previews Spacewalks to Upgrade ISS Power System

Published on Jan 4, 2017
On Jan. 4, NASA held a press briefing at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to preview a pair of planned spacewalks to perform a complex upgrade to the International Space Station’s power system. NASA’s Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson will conduct the spacewalk on Jan. 6. The second spacewalk, on Jan. 13, will be performed by Kimbrough and Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency). Working on the right side truss of the space station, the crew members will install adapter plates and hook up electrical connections for six new lithium-ion batteries that were delivered to the station in December.

Hats dry, storing bundle (I assume the get-ahead thermal covers) next to the airlock and the MISSE experiment - which presents a hazard, so they should not touch it.

EDIT: Yes, they are the thermal shields for the Node3 CBM, to be installed in a future EVA.

I got a bit lost here after the WIF reconfiguration... one of the bags they're carrying back to Quest is obviously the failed CLPA, but have they done other get-aheads in the meantime?

Coming up are the rat's nest photo documentation and the Destiny lab's handrail retrieval.

Instructed to move slow and steady for CO2 reasons - not a concern now, but probably want to avoid cutting the get-ahead short because of haste.

These shields will protect Node 3's CBM that is currently in use by having PMA-3 attached. Once this Mating Adapter is relocated to Node2 zenith for Commercial Crew, these shields will be used to protect the exposed CBM.

They are being stowed outside because they're bulky and take up too much valuable space inside the Station.

I Am a Camera: On a Spacewalkt

NASA Johnson (via Thomas Pesquet)

Published on Mar 20, 2017
To everything, there is a season, including the time when a small video camera makes its first-ever
trip into the void of space. On Jan. 13, 2017, European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet wore
just such a camera on his spacesuit during a nearly six-hour-long walk around the outside of the International Space Station with his crewmate, NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough. Here’s that day boiled

down to three minutes, from the point of view of the camera!
