Awesome, it has made me finally decide to go get a Challenger Columbia liscense plate here in Florida.

It is also a sober moment to reflect.  We live in the present, where we look at the frustrations and challenges of flying the shuttle and getting onto the CEV.  But 20, 50, 100, 500 years from now, when people are living on Mars, Moon, Ceres and Earth and everyone is communicating on the Internet they will see this whole age as the beginning.  the 30 year life of the shuttle will be a blink to them.

The Shuttle has been a step towards our ultimate goal in exploration and getting us off the planet and onward to the Moon and Mars.   The HST SM have been my favorite but all the things that it has done, Spacewalks, Shuttle/Mir, ISS, HST, runway landings will be something that are looked back at with wonder.

That said, its time to start preparing for the next chapter.  Serve the shuttle with pride and dignity and then lets get back to the Moon and restate our human claim to that world.
I know they don't need it, but Crossfeed would be super cool.

I used to mow Mr Crippens yard when I was 14 yrs old back in 1981.  I went to school with his youngest daughter.  Mr. Crippen is a good man and I am lucky to know him.  I didn't know it when I was at Marine Corps boot camp until a DI had asked me about Mr. Crippen.  Apparently he had written an endorsement letter on my behalf.
He did a great speech.

Thumbs up.

Robert Crippen is one great guy.  If you look at what has changed in the Shuttle program since STS-1, it makes his and John Young's flight even more heroic.

Chris, it would be nice if there were credits to go with this -- who produced it, when it was taken, who put all the footage together, etc.

It was shown on NASA TV during the anniversary. It was only on for a while, but we managed to grab it. That's all we know.

The speech itself has been discussed here in other threads; it was given at the memorial service on February 7th at the SLF; I have a feeling this is redundant, but anyway, a transcript and link to a video stream of the memorial service is here (Crippen's remarks begin about 20 minutes into the service):

That particular clip is part of a longer one called "The Best Among Us" in the Remembering STS-107 feature at the NASA Columbia website at http://www.nasa.gov/columbia/home/index.html  .  Well worth a look for anyone who is interested.

I missed that when it was first posted, so thank-you jj for bringing it back to view.

Bob Crippen's comments are deeply moving.

We all know what anniversary yesterday was.  To help remember I watch some of the commemorative videos that are archived here.  I greatly appreciate having nasaspaceflight.com to archive these types of videos.

You don't hear many eulogies to a machine.  Unfortunately, it is inevitable that Crippen's will not be the last one.  But I doubt better words will be ever spoken about a ship than Crippen's.

My Columbia tribute video used to be somewhere on Nasaspaceflight.com, but it seems to be gone now, sorry. If anyone wants to see it, let me know and I'll ask Chris if he wants me to upload it again.
