This is summary of Evolvable Mars Campaign (EMC ). Lots of good stuff in here, bit that relates to this thread are 2 cubesat missions (page 32) to moon that will fly on EM-1 in 2018.

Hmm, my google foo is failing me, from the data I saw on that link these seem to be flyby's  (cold gas thrusters, no provision for aerocapture) but I could find much else about them and their architecture.

@TM or anyone else have you got any more resources about the MarsCOs?

Ion thruster developed for cubesats looking to expanded into smallsat markets. This is just one of a few technologies that were developed for cubesat that end up finding there way into larger satellites.

Not a mission just a market prediction. Bolds well for all the small LVs currently in development and companies making cubesat components.

These 6u cubesats use GPS to monitor weather.

Smallsat insurance. Not as exciting as innovative technology, but very important to the success of cubesat and smallsat industry.
Having insurance should make funding these new startup businesses a little easier.

NASA Bfgs on Upcoming CubeSat Launches, Oct 2015, VAFB

07-Oct-2015 through 07-Oct-2015

NASA will hold two pre-launch briefings on October 7, 2015 at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB), CA on an upcoming launch that includes the launch of 13 cubesats, four of which are sponsored by NASA and nine that are sponsored by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).  One of the NRO-sponsored cubesats was developed with NASA funding according to the NASA press release.

The linked article says the following:

"We'll complete sensor integration and testing in batches and deliver them on a regular pace to the host spacecraft series starting in 2017," said Rex Ridenoure, CEO of Ecliptic.

So ... it sounds to me like it's a sensor package that would be a hosted payload on a large satellite constellation, rather than a cubesat constellation (unless the hosts are larger cubesats).  It might be interesting to speculate on what satellite constellation with 200+ satellites they have in mind.

There is a Kickstarter for it that explains more, but it looks like that has a very long way to go.  The satellite constellation got some media attention yesterday, but I don't think the Kickstarter campaign has had the sort of media/celebrity onslaught you'd want to have when trying to drum up as much crowdfunding as they're trying to:

Hosted payload makes a lot more sense. OneWeb or may be Plantlab.

Done little more research on this subject. It costs USA about $1.8B a year to fight forest fires and this cost only expected to increase.

Assuming they are using 3U cubesat and Rocket lab LV the deployment cost for 200 would be $39.2M (8x$4.9M). Of course a bulk buy discount would be expected, say <$35m. Even if it is >$100M all up to develop and deploy this constellation, it could pay for its self in first year.

They are being intentionally opaque with is particularly annoying.

"Dr Arthur Lane FireSat Technincal  Advisor" lets slip a few details
The spectra band is around 4 microns.  Mid-wave Infrared.  The optics look like an MWIR lens.  Probably uncooled microbolometer detectors. 
They want to operate at 1200 km on 200 satellites.  That's OneWeb.
They sound desperate to develop and prove the prototype sensor in time to get hosted aboard OneWeb because, he says, there may be no large constellations ever developed after that. Huh?
They have to get 200 satellites to get 15 minute revisit, but they don't say why 50 satellites with one hour revisit time wouldn't have a significant fraction of the value.

JPL has $1.8B/yr overhead, competed for and won, amoung other programs, two <$5M cubesat programs, and they have to run a kickstarter campaign for $280k to fund an instrument?

"JPL is arguably the only organization in the world with the requisite skill set to develop FireSat."
"Ecliptic is a recognized world leader in space sensor production development."
Oh, please!
It is not surprising that this kickstarter has made trivial progress towards its goal.

I wish I could capture the last few seconds of video.  It shows about a quarter of the OneWeb constellation and the traffic at the poles is scary enough.
