List of Acronyms used in Space Flight
« on: 05/22/2014 01:00 am »
I created a document (see attachment) listing all acronyms used in space flight. The list is still 99.9% a cut & past from the NASA Acronym list. However, many acronyms currently used in this blog and elsewhere are not yet included.

I will keep it updated by asking people to supply a translation of any acronym used in a post. You can even add by posting here.

I will update the document time by time and attach the latest version to this post.

Please write me or post in the thread if you have any suggestion or

cheers,
pagheca

Well that's amazing work!

We'll make this thread sticky at the top after everyone has seen it on the normal listing! :)

I guess two of the most common NSF ones, RUD and BFR aren't "official" NASA acronyms.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

My aim is to supply a list to be used by people that, like me, is not directly involved in this business and find hard to understand a lot of posts here.

So, what those RUD and BFR means?

@Chris et al.: thanks, but I'm not happy with it. I couldn't find a way to make it easier to manage. The document is bulky and even a simple search may be difficult.

Any idea???

RUD is used when your test winds up strewn across the landscape. Explosion is such an unpleasant term, they call it a "Rapid Unplanned Disassembly"
BFR is a term to describe a huge vaguely defined rocket.
 Both, obviously unofficial terms.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Then there are a few that are unofficial, to an individual/crew level or ones used by the public...
SOL comes to mind.  :o Heard that one at Ellington a while back. Also heard someone at NASA use that in reference to Lisa Nowak just before NASA and the Navy booted her.
Also, I've heard DT, meaning 'Deceleration Trauma' to mean someone smacking the earth at a high rate of speed from above (as in, "Man, that ol' boy's chute didn't open. Go grab a mop, man!").

Please, I really appreciate your comments, but remember to add the acronym explanation!!!

What does SOL and BFR means exactly? I mean something like Bxxxx  Fxxxxx Rxxx

Thanks again for your time. I'm updating the paper as I read, but it's really a nightmare! This site has a production rate for acronym that would overcome the capability of 10 human being working full time on that! :)

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but in the only context in which I've run across SOL, it means S*** Outta Luck, the S*** usage the same as in "Same s***, different day."

In this context, SOL would be used as follows:  "He thought he would be able to get through his task list today, but what with the subcontractors going out on strike, he was SOL."

You nailed it, Doug. SOL is in general public use and I've heard a few NASA folks use it as well...

Well, yeah, you didn't read the line I wrote right above that to explain it, apparently.  ???
It is a common-use term that IS indeed used by NASA. I've heard it more then once at Houston.

Used by a lot more people not in NASA.  I have heard many more others acronyms at NASA, but that does mean they are spaceflight related.  SOL is no different than FUBAR or SNAFU.  If you are going to include SOL, might as well include SOB, STFU, WTFO, MFWIC, etc.  Military slang does not equate to NASA or spaceflight slang.  Believe it or not Houston is not the center of the spaceflight universe.

I will not include those acronyms*.

But I would propose a spaceflight "slang" dictionary at this point...

EDIT:

*I mean SOL etc.

SSTO RLV is single stage to orbit reusable launch vehicle. The Millennium Falcon was one of these.
