Arianespace Q&A
« on: 09/01/2012 03:12 pm »
Starting a Q&A thread for Arianespace...

Does anyone knows if there is any kind of post launch report for the Arianespace missions?

Of course. Every flight is analysed and a report produced. Any vehicle issues are discussed with Astrium.
Public domain? No. Ask ULA for their post-flight reports.

Does anybody know if there is a public list somewhere of satellites currently contracted by Arianespace? (Vega, Soyuz, or Ariane.)
I always consider space to be the FIRST frontier.

Not sure where to post this, but for Android users who are missing out on Arianespace launches lately, there's finally an app for live coverage, news et al.! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paraweb.arianespace  8)

Tangent question in light of potential Cygnus flight from Kourou.....

Do Arianespace (or Starsem for that matter) actually market Soyuz rocket flights without using the Fregat stage? Their user manuals doesn't seems to show that option.....  :-\

I don't know for Starsem, but for launches from Kourou, I believe the version with Fregat is the only option available.

Why, the ST Fairing changes nothing and is just an adapter interface. I'm pretty sure RSC Progress would be happy to sell a Soyuz-2-STA without subcontracting Lavonchin for a Fregate. And Arianespace actually does very little for Soyuz launches from Kourou. I've heard that even the drivers of the trucks used to unload the stages from the ships are Russians.
Main issue would be GSE and integration, I would guess.

Well, maybe there is no serious technical difficulty of doing so, it's probably for the simplicity of having a single interface and integration process.
However, is there such a large market for Soyuz launches without Fregat ?

PS: Thinking about it, there might be some agreement between Arianespace/Starsem and the Russian Space agency. I seem to remember for example that the Soyuz FG/Fregat can only be comercialised by Starsem. So maybe they have a more general agreement on what can be launched by who and Arianespace only launches the Soyuz ST with Fregat?

As a followup question from another thread, can anyone point to references on what kind of upgrades specifically Ariane-5ECA configuration Vulcain-2/EPC and EPA stages have received over it's lifetime ? I remember a few things for example about segment join bolts being replaced by welds for example, but i thought this was more 5G(S+)->ECA transition ?
As far as i understand, ECA configuration has not been significantly changed over the years.

Ariane 5 ECA evolution (I looked this up for modeling purposes, so I may have overlooked small changes).

The changes for the Ariane 5 ECA were introduced in stages.

The boosters were modified in two stages. First, the amount of propellant was increased by 3 t, this extra is installed in the top segment of the booster. The size of the booster remains the same. This version is called EAP-241.
Later, the booster casings were modified to make them lighter. EAP-238 and 241 boosters each consist of 7 segments. The joints are bronze (I think this is a metal hoop around the joint). These joints were changed: most of the booster segments are welded together in the factory, and the boosters are shipped in 3 parts, so 3 field joints remain. This reduced the weight by 1900 kg. This version of the booster is known as the EAP-241A.

They also switched the insulation tiles on the first and second stage at some point. This seems to be a minor change, I can't find much information on it. I've included it because it makes a big difference for the appearance of the model.

the first ECAs used the EAP-241 and beige insulation on the first and second stage:
missions V-157, 164, 167, 170-173, 175.

EAP-241 and blue insulation:
182, 184-186, 189

EAP 241A and blue insulation:
174, 176, 177, 179, 183, 187, 188, 190 and all later flights

Edit:
The Capcomespace.net site has pretty good information on the Ariane program. It's all in French, which I can read a bit, otherwise Google Translate gives you the gist.

this page details the changes made for the ECA

There's also a complete list of Ariane launches, going through them gave me the ECA evolution data.

A long shot question for CNES/AE persons that might be reading this: (very nerdy, be aware....)

Does anybody know where the name S3B HN came from ?
we have S3B HR (which is the fueling hall, ie. Hall Remplisage in french, easy) but HN is unknown, even the local people don't know (it is not Hall Nord, as its not North)

On Nicolas Pillet's website , it is said that   HN = Hall d'eNcapsulation .

I confirm. Don't ask me why they did not chose "HE"...

To my knowledge there is/has been no Encapsulation hall in S3A. It is/was only used for propellants loading operations. HE stands for Hall d'Equilibrage (Balancing Hall) used for the determination  - on a specific rotating table  [Schenck]- of the dynamic unbalance of spacecraft using a solid propellant AKM. Therefore the HE acronym was already used. Hence HN for eNcapsulation.

I haven't found discussions about Oneweb contract with Ariane, and I am curious whether Ariane will get enough Soyuzs for their contract with Oneweb. Are their getting supply of Soyuzs on a routine basis?

Hello,
https://www.google.fr/webhp?ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=cEnbVsC_M4GtU8KWsLgN#q=%22ariane+5%22%2210300+kg%22

I've heard that Ariane 5 largest payload to GTO was 10317 kg in February 2013. Does anybody know if that record has been broken since then - it was three years ago ?
