Soyuz launcher at the Guiana Space Center:
Russian equipment en route for French Guiana

On Tuesday afternoon, July 8, the container ship Flinterland left the port of Saint Petersburg for French Guiana, carrying Russian-built equipment for the new Soyuz launch complex at the Guiana Space Center (CSG).

A total of 160 containers were loaded on the Flinterland, from the Samara Space Center, as well as KBOM and NPO Lavotchkine, the main Russian companies participating in the program to launch Soyuz rockets from the Guiana Space Center. The trip from Saint Petersburg to Cayenne, French Guiana will take about 16 days.

Equipment carried on the ship includes the service cabin, a major system providing access to the Soyuz launcher on its launch pad, as well as various infrastructure items needed for the operation of Soyuz and its Fregat upper stage.

"This shipment shows that Russian space companies have met their commitments," said a delighted Anatoly Perminov, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos. "Two more shipments will follow, carrying other infrastructure parts. Russian specialists will be flying to French Guiana this month to meet the Flinterland, and they will be installing the equipment in conjunction with their European partners."

"The shipment of this Russian-built equipment to French Guiana marks a major milestone in the program for Soyuz launches from the Guiana Space Center," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace. "By adding Soyuz launches, the Arianespace family will offer a medium launcher with unrivaled reliability, and we have already signed several contracts for this launcher."

Not sure if this was posted here before. It's from late July.

Anyway,

http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/080725-busmon-soyuz-delay.html

"The first flight of Russia's Soyuz medium-lift rocket from Europe's spaceport here still is pegged for the second half of 2009 but government and industry officials say privately that an early 2010 date looks more likely.
[..]

The arrival of Russian hardware and personnel to complete the Soyuz launch pad will put unprecedented stresses on local operations here and require teams of interpreters and a bolstered police force to smooth out potential rough spots, officials here said in July 20-22 interviews during a meeting of European space ministers.

The Russian teams will be sequestered some 13 kilometers from Ariane 5 operations and will be staying in nearby Sinnamary and barred from most visits to the Ariane 5 launch site in the interests of security.

Similarly, the Russian teams have declined to share the formula for Soyuz kerosene fuel, which thus will be shipped from Russia, along with individual rockets, to the launch pad here.

The Soyuz integration hall will likewise be off-limits to non-Russian personnel except on special occasions"

New Soyuz Launch Pad On Way

CANNES - Workers are beginning to install equipment and systems at Europe's new Soyuz launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana, in a race to have the facility ready by the middle of next year.

The new pad is needed to meet hot demand for medium-sized communications and Earth observation satellites and provide a backup for the Ariane 5 heavy-lift launcher. Among users pressing for an early startup is Globalstar, which has booked four flights, plus four options, for a new fleet to replace its rapidly aging satphone constellation.

Arianespace signs contract with Russian space agency for 10 Soyuz launchers
Evry, September 20, 2008

http://www.arianespace.com/news-press-release-2008/09-20-08-Soyuz-Launcher-Contract.asp

"Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, and Anatoly Perminov, General Director of the Russian space agency Roskosmos, signed a contract on Saturday, September 20, for the acquisition of ten Soyuz launch vehicles. The contract was signed in Sochi during a French-Russian governmental seminar, attended by both the French and Russian prime ministers. These Soyuz rockets will be launched from either the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, or the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, starting in the second half of 2009.

The contract provides for the supply of 10 Soyuz ST launchers (three stages, fairing and Fregat upper stage), along with the preparation and launch operations. It follows the contract signed in June 2007 covering the first four Soyuz rockets to be launched from the Guiana Space Center.

This latest step forward in European-Russian collaboration on the Soyuz launcher reflects the commercial success of upcoming Soyuz launches from the Guiana Space Center.

The Soyuz launcher will be operated from the Guiana Space Center starting in the second half of 2009, along with the Ariane 5 heavy launcher and the Vega light launcher. Arianespace operates this complete family of launchers from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana"

Which versions of the Soyuz will be flown from Kourou? The Soyuz-User-guide (of 2006) both mentions the 2-1a and 2-1b versions, but the new incarnation of the Arianespace website mentions only the RD-0124 powered version (2-1b).

Has anyone info, if there will be a mix of bot versions or will only the 2-1b be used?

According to Novosti kosmonavtiki forum, among already ordered Soyuz-ST rockets will be rockets of both versions.

It is surprising me... I thought that 2.1b was the only version to be launched from CSG...

There are slightly different ground support equipments needed for the two different versions (e.g. 2.1B uses different kerosene for the Blok-I). Currently, the installations at Kourou are being prepared to support the 2.1A version. The launch pad will be upgraded to 2.1B compatibility at a later stage.
