We have a scrub due to a power outage at the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University! The APL is the New Horizons MCC. It looks like a 24 hour recycle.

Well, At least we didn't have to wait for hours in windy conditions like SpaceCat and I (and several hundred others) did yesterday.  I didn't even leave the house to go to the launch viewing site.

I must say that I met one of our fellow forum mates, SpaceCat, at the viewing area yesterday.  Lots more fun when you have a friend to talk to while waiting for the launch abort.  I enjoyed meeting another old head in the space business.  We both had some stories to tell.

Cheers,

Larry

There will be a meeting a 4 pm EST to determine if APL will be able to support another attempt tommorow or if they need more time.

JHU APL is right down the street from me here (I'm in Baltimore), and we had some pretty heavy weather move through here this morning.  Guess that tripped the power.

Looks like APL weren't the only ones.  BG&E has 2800 customers without power right now all over the state:

Well, the if this power loss wouldn't have happened would have had a launch right now. Weather is 100% "Go", clear skies and only about 13 kt winds.

Gradually clearing out now- 100 miles down the coast.  No work escape for the Cat today- but we'll see about tomorrow if they decide to try again.

After staring at them for hours yesterday, found this little article about the pad lightning protection systems interesting:

We are go for a launch tommorow! Officials met at 4 pm to discuss whether they should go ahead with a launch tommorow or not and they decided to press on for a launch tommorow between 1:08 pm EST and 3:07 pm EST.

Weather should ideal tommorow so barring any technical hitches, New Horizons will leave planet Earth bound for Pluto and beyond tommorow at 1:08 pm EST!

Thanks for the article.  You and I talked about a couple of the tests discussed in that article.  Now I know more than I ever wanted to know about those towers!   :)

Will I see you at the launch viewing area again tomorrow?

cheers,

Larry

I'll be down there watching and listening!

Does anyone have data about how many Gs the payload will be subjected to during launch?  Past the moon in 9 hours...must be serious acceleration there.

Cheers,

Larry

Well I am absolutely exhausted, but I know it's well worth it in the end!

Beautiful rocket out there, just got back from the launch pad servicing remote cameras.
