I'm glad someone made a thread about these guys, I was wondering about that rocket nozzle. I've never heard of a nozzle where the entire thing glows white-hot, top to bottom -- what's the deal with it, like what kind of engine bell is that? Is it ablative?
Anyway I love what these guys are doing on a shoestring budget. I'd love to see them get to the level where Masten is.
-
It's called radiatively cooled nozzle. merlin 1 Vacuum has it. And I think the RD-58MF is supposed to have a composite one. You basically use a material that can tolerate the heat and put some serious thermal barrier upstream.

Per their site, most of their engines are ablative, but it's quite common for these things to look a lot whiter in photos and video than they would in person.

Seems as per latest tests, they are experimenting with liquid cooling jackets just now.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for dropping by !
Are you able to share some updates with us here, as well ? For example, what major upcoming milestones is the company looking forward to ?
Also, i've tried to become a member of your fanclub on Campfire, but unfortunately Japanese translation didnt get me far enough. Any chance you guys could start a Patreon account in parallel ?

Hi
I'm from this company too ;)
Our next mile stone is to launch sounding rocket MOMO.
Currently we are working on manufacturing the very first MOMO.
Next experiment will be our final full duration static fire test for MOMO which will be held soon.
On top of that, we are working on orbital rocket.
We are doing lots of calculations so that our orbital rocket will properly deliver satellites.
Our programs are uploaded here https://github.com/istellartech.
Its constantly been updated.
Experimental wise, we started to work on critical technology for orbital rocket, turbo pumps.
We have already done few experimental static fire test of gas generator to get a better understanding.

We thought about starting a cloud funding in kickstarter but unfortunately, we don't have a US bank account.

Kickstarter has preannounced they are entering the japanese market (estimated fall 2017), which I assume means they will accept japanese companies with japanese bank accounts.

Would be interesting as a "launch" campaign partner to be one of the first all japanese kickstarter campaigns.

TOKYO -- Interstellar Technologies will attempt to launch a privately developed rocket into space on July 29, aiming to become the first Japanese company to do so successfully.
The venture announced plans Thursday to launch its first rocket, the Momo, from the northern island of Hokkaido in a window that starts at 10:20 a.m. JST.

Interesting. Historically companies that have stayed in the business of making sounding rockets have converged on the solid fuel design, but your pressure fed LOX/Ethanol seems only a little more complex, but is safer and should have higher performance. It also seems to have a lower g rating, needing less ruggedly built hardware.
I look forward to seeing many projects starting their lives with a first flight on this rocket.

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20170730/k10011080591000.html
The rocket was scheduled to be launched at around 6:30 a.m., but since a number of troubles were found in valves of liquid oxygen tank etc, work continued with the aim of launch until 0:30 pm.
However, it was decided that safety could not be secured because a ship entered the warning area on the sea, and it was decided to aim the launch after 3:45 pm.
fingers crossed for next attempt

Translation is not great but I think the meaning is clear enough. Flew for about 80s so that’s a decent amount of time before telemetry was lost. Hopefully they have a lot of data on how well it performed to that point.
(続く) #MOMO_FT1
MOMO has a mechanism called telemetry attitude, position, speed, aircraft equipped with sensors using the radio at all times to the control room on the ground send information. Flying in the area planned from aircraft in the air traffic control? Are you sure you do not fall into a dangerous place? Has been determined. (Continued) #MOMO_FT1

With the launch of this has cut off this telemetry communication about 80 seconds after engine ignition and mobilization. Because of this and sent for could no longer understand the aircraft's position and the position the engine emergency stop command, made aircraft falling within the warning area. Landing positions are seen as about 8 km off the coast. #MOMO_TF1

Indeed. Let's remember historically ELV's have a 50/50 chance of a successful first flight and the first 3 F1 flights were not successful.
It looked like lousy weather for a launch, but maybe it looked worse than it was IE bad visibility but light winds and no lightning, which are the real trouble makers in a launch.
On the upside isn't 80secs close to stage separation? For a first flight that should be quite useful, provided they can identify the root cause. Also the translation implies the vehicle self terminated, without a range safety receiver on board. That may sound trivial but those are specialist devices and quite expensive for what they do. Not needing to carry one disproportionately lowers the fixed costs of a small vehicle, which is a good thing if you want to make this vehicle profitable.
I hope they assess the data and use it to drive the next copy of the vehicle.

Some articles out now, no new detail
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2017/07/30/business/tech/launch-private-rocket-backed-horie-fails-off-hokkaido/
The launch of what would have been Japan’s first privately developed rocket to reach outer space failed Sunday off Hokkaido after telemetry was lost, forcing it to be aborted, the Hokkaido-based developer said.
Officials from Interstellar Technologies Inc., founded by former Livedoor Co. President Takafumi Horie, said the 10-meter-long Momo rocket was aborted after communications with the rocket’s telemetry system failed about 80 seconds after liftoff. The rocket was launched from the town of Taiki, on the island’s south coast.
The rocket fell into the Pacific Ocean about 8 km offshore after its engine was halted, they said.

So engine shutdown was by radio command rather than on board software?
It also suggests engine cutoff shut off power, which seems odd, like on board power was being generated from the engine, rather than from a battery.
TBH this sounds like quite a good idea, depending on the trade off between generator mass and battery mass, with a small battery to run between switching to internal power and engine start.

The flight was terminated because the rocket stopped transmitting so onboard footage and GNC data was lost shortly before ground issued thrust and flight termination. Your theory is unlikely based on the available data on the rocket. Also the receiver on the rocket worked because it was a separate antenna and box rather than combined transceiver unit like most sounding rockets these days.

That bending could be just a video artefact. However, this might show the camera being ripped off, perhaps due to the vehicle losing control. The vehicle does appear to be rolling, probably not a good thing in a liquid fuelled rocket, as the propellant would centrifuge to the walls, changing the centre of gravity and possibly sending the vehicle into a flat spin.

Hi guys. :)
Thank you for tracking us!
As everyone here knows, we lost a signal after 66 second of flight.
In the news, it states we sent an abort signal and we did.
But most probably before we sent the command, it would have been shut down by it self.
We are still under investigation of the root cause of this event.
We have some idea on what has happend but still under discussion.
Also, the team are exhausted from the launch schedule which we used up all the windows.
Anyway, we got a valuable data from the rocket which can lead to 2nd MOMO.
We are planning to launch it again by end of this year with the improvement and hopefully, the next launch will be in outer space. 8)
Stay tuned!

It's interesting how japanese domestic reporting calls it a failure, but US reporting calls it a partial success.
Horie-mon is a bit miffed by Canon Electronics forming a new domestic newspace JV and he wasn't invited. If Interstellar can get a successful reflight in before Canon Electronics and their SS-520 reflight, we may see Horie-mon steal some of the PR thunder here.

Japanese company plans second launch of privately funded sounding rocket this year
by Jeff Foust — August 23, 2017
LOGAN, Utah — A Japanese company whose first sounding rocket launch last month failed to reach space will try again by the end of the year as it continues work on a small launch vehicle.
[…]
Horio said that, once in commercial service, Interstellar will sell launches of Momo for $300,000 each. The company expects to produce one rocket every one to two months.

So, will they launch this month? More importantly, will they launch before Canon Electronics Inc.?
Judging by their crowdfunding campaign status for MOMO2, maybe not (currently around 13% funded, with two months left in the campaign)

The poor thing. I appreciate a little kaboomy goodness from spaceflight history, but it's another thing when you're watching a startup and a team that's giving everything they've got so far.

I detected a leak on the side of the engine just one second after ignition. I captured two pictures to illustrate the moment. Probably, the engine shutdown was a remotely commanded or it happened because the loss of pressure reducing substantially the pressure drop from the chamber to the line.

MOMO 2 replays from multiple angles

-
What is the first stage engine exactly? There was talk of it using an ablative nozzle, so do hot fire tests require replacing the nozzle?
-
Not sure if the engine is ablative, but there is certainly no liquid cooling!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsJ4Zm647n0
-
Some screen grabs. Looks like a combustion chamber failure.
-
From the height though one might guess a chamber injector header failure since it comes out sideways? Unlikely the top of the combustion chamber came undone though. The nozzle is uncooled, but if the chamber is regen cooled or an expander cycle, then that pipework might be suspect as well.

So not a static fire per se, but a test article?
-
Via Google Translate:
With regard to ZERO, which is more difficult to develop than MOMO, we do not develop with IST alone, but work with "All Rocket Partners", a support team in which eight companies and organizations such as Marubeni and JAXA participate. Aim for launch in 2023.
https://monoist.atmarkit.co.jp/mn/articles/1903/20/news049.html
20 March, 2019
Just eight months ago, they estimated (https://spacenews.com/japans-interstellar-technologies-goes-full-throttle-toward-small-orbital-rocket/) a first launch in 2020 and entering service in 2021. Launch date is slipping faster than time. :-\
-
While there are budget realities hampering them, there are are other issues at play here. The increased government involvement is partly due to government pressure to "tame" space startups (likely seeing SpaceX going it's own way is making government officials in japan nervous, because they absolutely hate lack of control)(so many people have it out for Horiemon), and partly because a number of engineers have left Interstellar recently and started interviewing at other space startups, which may indicate a brain drain too far gone for now resulting in a need to backfill with JAXA backbenchers.
-
So not a static fire per se, but a test article?
It is a flight article undergoing additional tests until satisfied.

While most people haven't heard of this, in Japan, there is a oddball "hometown tax" system, where people who don't live in a particular town/area (but likely grew up there) can choose to voluntarily send a tax payment to that district. This was partly intended as a supplement to local taxes, sorta similar to how people who live abroad send money home to family. Now this system has sorta become a crowdfunding hybrid of sorts now, where people can send their payment, and they get some sort of gift back of some lesser value (local food, gifts, event tickets, a hotel stay voucher, etc). Usually this ends up being something like getting a sack of local rice.
However, it seems the town of Taiki where Interstellar is located, now has a choice to select crowdfunding a MoMo rocket for their hometown tax it seems...
Furusato Tax (https://www.furusato-tax.jp/gcf/531)
and the google translate link (https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.furusato-tax.jp%2Fgcf%2F531)
So, now that MoMo 3 is done, which comes next, MoMO4 (with another crowdfunding campaign on Campfire), or their commercial ZERO rocket?

Payload Fairing: Masaru Tange
“宇そ宙らにシフト!” (Shift to Space!) will be printed on the rocket’s nose cone by request from Mr. Tange. In addition, Mr. Tange will have the honor of pressing the launch button for “Paters DreamMOMO-F4”.
Propellant Tank: Owndays Co., Inc.
Owndays’ company logo will be displayed on MOMO-F4’s propellant tank.
CASTEM Co., Ltd. “Origami Paper Airplane Project”
For over ten years, CASTEM’s Takuo Toda has dreamt of flying a paper airplane from space. With MOMO-F4, we aim to launch his dream into reality! “Paters Dream MOMO-F4” will fly to an apogee of over 100 km carrying Origami Paper Airplanes that will be ejected from the rocket into the void of outer space. Mr. Toda will press the button to launch the three Origami Airplanes containing the names of all patrons who supported the crowdfunding of this project. This will be the first time a paper airplane is launched from a rocket in space. Truly a project filled withdreams.
Heiwa Shuzou Co., Ltd. “Nihonshu”
We will add some of Heiwa Shuzou’s (based in Wakayama Prefecture) highest quality “Kiido” Sake to MOMO-F4’s rocket fuel. This will be the first time a rocket is launched with fuel containing ethanol extracted from Japanese rice wine. Profits from the saleof “Kiido” Sake, with the exception of materials and labour costs, will be used to support the launch of MOMO. With both a Japanese Rocket and Japanese rice wine, this will be a 100% “MADE IN JAPAN” effort.
Kochi University of Technology “Infrasound Sensor Experiment”
This experiment carried out by The Kochi University of Technology aims to use an Infrasound (low-frequency sound) sensor to improve technology used to observe phenomena that lead to natural disasters such as tsunamis, lightning, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions.
GROSEBAL Co., Ltd. “Cheese Burger”
On MOMO-F3 we launched a Sagamihara specialty: “Cheese Hamburg Steak”. On the upcoming launch, we have collaborated with Sakane Ranch to launch a “Cheese Burger” using Taiki-cho’s specialty cheese to space.
Saza Coffee Co., Ltd. “Panama Geisha”
200 g of Saza’s finest coffee beans will get a ride to space aboard MOMO-F4.
Owndays Co., Ltd. “AIR Ultem”
A pair of Owndays glasses will be launched aboard MOMO-F4. “Ultem resin”, an ultra-elastic aerospace grade material, is used in the frame of these glasses.
Rheos Capital Works Inc. “Hifumiro”
A plush toy of Rehos Capital Work’s investment trust mascot, “Hifumiro”, will fly aboard MOMO-F4.

Launch Time: 4:20 p.m. (JST)
Flight Time: 172 seconds
Maximum Apogee: 13.3 km
Time to Max. Apogee: 96 seconds after liftoff
Landing Site: 9km downrange from launch site
We would like to thank all of those who supported the launch of “Paters Dream” MOMO-F4.

From the onboard video, I calculated a time of 64 seconds from the time of ignition to when the video went blank, closely matching the 64.3 seconds when the computer issued the cutoff command. The total burn time was expected to be 120 seconds, so the burn was only 54% of that.
-
Here are the last few moments of the launch video. We can see the base of the vehicle at a different position in the video frame at the end. We do see the thrust flame decreasing before the movement. This probably indicates vehicle breakup after engine cutoff.

MOMO5 has had a launch rehearsal

Rehearsal IST Taiki for launch of MOMO5
2020/04/08 13:01
[Taiki] The town's venture company Interstellar Technologies (IST, President Takahiro Inagawa) rehearsed for the launch of the fifth MOMO (MOMO) observation rocket at the experimental site at Daiki Machihama from the night of the 7th to the early morning of the 8th. Was done. Unit 5 was scheduled for its first winter launch late last year and earlier this year, but was postponed due to a malfunction of the aircraft. The IST is preparing to launch again as soon as possible.
In Unit 5, a malfunction occurred in the communication electronic equipment mounted on the fuselage. Due to the effects of cold weather, we took measures such as changing the design and replacing electronic boards.
This time, a “full dress rehearsal” was conducted to check the flow just before the ignition of the engine as if it were in production. At around 9 pm on July 7, about 30 employees gathered at the test site, took the aircraft out of the hangar, set it up on the launch site, and actually filled the propellant ethanol and liquid oxygen. The launch time was set at 5:15 am on the 8th, and the work flow up to the countdown and the condition of the aircraft were checked.
President Inagawa said, "No major trouble, we could confirm the operation of the changed electronic components, and made great progress toward the launch. We will rehearse again and fix the launch schedule." Aim to continue to outer space.
Unit 5 is equipped with Kochi University of Technology observation equipment, navigation sensors, coffee beans, etc., as in the launch plan for the New Year holidays. Attempts to bake the confectionery with the flame of the launch. (Tomohiro Matsumura)

Apologies for not picking up on that when I posted.
MOMO4 launched July 27th 2019, so clearly MOMO5 couldn’t have been tested last July. So the translation linking MOMO5 to July doesn’t make sense.
Using Google to just translate the date part (7日午後11時ごろ) of the photo caption gives: “ Around 11 pm on the 7th” with no mention of July. So I think a translation error.

MOMO No. 5 postponement of launch
Interstellar Technologies
2020/04/30 08:31
Hello, Inter Stellar Technology's (below, IST) is a public relations team.
As you may already know in the news and on IST's SNS, etc., we held an emergency press conference at 20:00 on Tuesday, April 28, and announced the postponement of the launch of MOMO Unit 5. I think many people were surprised by the sudden news and announcements ...
MOMO No. 5 is my rocket, I'm really sorry for the late report to everyone who was looking forward to launching now?
Today, I would like to report on the process leading up to that decision and future actions.
Also, this is the same sentence as published in CAMPFIRE.
Announcement of maximum infectious disease control, launch of no audience
On Monday, April 20, IST announced the launch schedule at an online press conference in preparation for the launch of MOMO Unit 5. The initial plan was to launch at 5:15 on Saturday, May 2. The spare days are from May 3 (Sun) to May 6 (Wed). It was a timetable that we had to spend time and effort to make adjustments with about 30 or more related places over 3 months ago.
In order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infectious disease, the launch is being carried out while the national emergency declaration has been issued. It means that it will not postpone itself, and will not stop development activities as much as possible.
From the standpoint of preventing the spread of infection, we have set up a "launch without an audience" and have announced that the public viewing venue sponsored by Taiki-cho and the rocket launch site Sky Hills sponsored by IST will not be established at all, and the event will be canceled completely. It was.
In addition, we are calling for Taiki to refrain from coming to the town, restricting access to launch sites where rockets can be seen, and expanding and strengthening patrol guards in Taiki. The restricted access area was expanded this time to about 35 ㎢. For example, it is more than half of the inside of the Yamanote line. You can not enter in the mountain ・ If you patrol and close several places such as a plaza, it will be a limited area of 70 to 80 ㎢. It is more than the area of Yamanote Line. We planned to go around that wide area with Taiki-cho and the police on guard. We have taken steps to enforce crackdowns when entering private land, and to have people come home even if they come, but this time we have strengthened it further. I heard from the Taiki-cho government office that there were about 20 voices of anxiety, but I am convinced that the situation of "3 dense" can not be understood if you look at the site. It was From May 2nd to 6th, restaurants in the town are self-restraining and shortened hours, so there are significantly fewer places where people gather or contact people than usual.
In addition, we asked only the sponsors and related parties to refrain from coming to the town, and even the reporters who interviewed were only entering the photographers in order to limit the coming to Taiki town as much as possible. .
Since it's a time when people are clamoring for going out, I ask everyone who supports IST and MOMO No. 5 to enjoy rocket launches at home through live distribution on YouTube and Nico Nico Douga.
In addition, IST's daily work
・ Telework implementation, recommendation
・ Active use of video conferencing for meetings with outside parties
・ Reduce visits and outings asmuch as possible
・ Return to and from members coming from Tokyo with a minimum number of people Measures to reduce the number of measures - Measurement by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and local governments (3 avoidance of coughing, cough etiquette, ventilation, wearing masks, social distance, etc.) are taken on a daily basis to prevent the spread of infection. The town also received an evaluation that "the measures are sufficient".
In parallel with these measures, the full dress rehearsal (the same rehearsal as on the day of the launch) was completed without any problems, and the members were full of enthusiasm and passion, saying, "I'm ready!"
Request of postponement of launch from Taiki Town
However, after the launch date was announced on April 20 (Monday), there were about 20 voices concerned about the entry of visitors who did not respond to the call for self-restraint of Kurumachi and the subsequent contact with townspeople for shopping in the town. I arrived at the government office. About half of them were voices from the townspeople.
While Taiki-cho has a role in ensuring the safety and security of the townspeople, in response to the efforts to create a space town, Taiki-cho has requested that Taiki-cho postpone the launch from May 2 to 6. We received it on Tuesday, April 27. It was a sudden 4 days before the launch date.
Self-restraint of launch = self-restraint of corporate activities
In response to the request for postponement, we had various discussions and discussions within the company, and as a result we decided to accept the postponement, but there are a few things we would like you to know.
・ We will take maximum measures to prevent infectious diseases . As I mentioned earlier, we will take measures to prevent infectious diseases .
The rocket launch business is not an event.
Rocket launch is a launch business, and the event is not the main purpose. Rockets are a transportation industry that carries things and feelings into space. At MOMO, we work on demonstrating the technology, carrying out observation experiments with customer payloads, being used as PR for companies and products, and carrying someone's dreams and thoughts to space. It is a job that has customers such as universities, companies and individuals.
I say it many times, but rocket launch is not an event business. It is a side effect that visitors come to Taiki Town. I hope Taiki-cho's economy will be activated and become a new tourism resource. With the feeling that we would like to give back to the local people who usually support us, we have established a tour site to support local activities so far. Therefore, it may be different to regard it as an event and criticize it. The event itself is not conducted by non-spectators, and it is not possible to enter in the first place, and it is not an event-based business. The fact that the event is not the main subject does not mean that it is subject to the self-restraint request and leave compensation issued by Hokkaido.
It was not possible to easily secure the launch date and time, but I was told
that it would be better to stop the GW and start it on the next week or on weekdays after consecutive holidays. It can be secured only by carefully planning and adjusting from the front. It can be implemented only after understanding and cooperation of many related parties including Taiki Town. It's not easy to say, "We will postpone this week and do it next week."
Because it is a venture company, we cannot afford it ... Although
we are raising funds, we are a venture company and have no physical strength. (It's an embarrassing story, but I would like you to know it, so I will tell you.) It is often thought that there is funding because it is a company of Holliemon, but it is a venture, and development takes several years It costs a lot of money, so I can't afford it ...
In addition, the self-restraint of the company's main business of launching rockets, the impact of which is by no means light. Also, the trend of the new coronavirus is uncertain, and I don't think we can be optimistic. There is a possibility that the infection will spread over the next few months, and it may be a unit of half a year or one year instead of several months. The request for postponement during this period sounds like a request to stop economic activity for several months, and it was a very tough decision for the company.
Postponement is a painful decision
With this request, if you do not follow the request, Taiki Town will not be able to receive support for the launch, so it will be difficult to launch.
In addition, support from local people including the government office is indispensable for development in Taiki Town. We are in a position to launch because we have local support. Taiki-cho, Tokachi, and Hokkaido have all been together, so it was a big factor in making decisions.
Although it is a difficult decision, we decided to accept the request from Taiki-cho to postpone the launch only during the period from May 2 to May 6.
Even if all the measures for "safety" are perfect, it was difficult to obtain "safety" in a situation where it was only a few days before the launch.
Regarding infectious diseases, I intend to rationally implement effective countermeasures as closely as possible while watching the site, but I am sorry that it was not understood, but on the other hand, we also I think that there was not enough explanation about the situation where IST is located. As I mentioned above, I am going to tell you about the internal circumstances that I have not talked about so far.
About future correspondence
The next launch time is yet to be determined, but we will aim for the launch as soon as possible after coordination with the relevant parties. However, I feel that it may be possible to continue the declaration of emergencies for several months to a year in the future, with the convergence of infectious diseases and the future uncertain. If you are told that a launch is not possible during the declaration of an emergency, you will not be able to carry out your corporate activities, and in the worst case, you may even withdraw from your business. To prevent this from happening, we will consider together with Taiki-cho a system that allows launches while taking measures against infectious diseases.
Space development in Taiki Town and space development at IST. I think that Taiki-cho and IST are one and the same.
We hear from residents that they are worried that IST will leave Taiki-cho, but that's not the case, so please be assured. I feel like continuing development in Taiki Town.
However, it is honest that there are some opinions about this global epidemic, and there are some concerns about when the next launch will be possible and whether corporate activities will be possible. We will discuss specific measures while having dialogue with Taiki Town.
Employees were so enthusiastic that they said, “Okay! I will definitely succeed next time!”, So there are places where my feelings have not been sorted out after the sudden postponement. I will proceed to the next timing. The development of the orbit injection rocket "ZERO" must be done in parallel, and there is no time to look down. .
In addition, there is no talk about compensation for leave at this stage, so we are rushing to implement crowdfunding and preparing to do something ourselves.
We will make an announcement on our SNS and website in the near future, so we would appreciate if you could support and feel free to contact us.
Many people have received comments and messages that support the IST. Thank you very much.
We would be happy if you could continue to support us.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Watching the on-board video, I am assuming a nozzle failure/break-up around 36 seconds after ignition. It is possible to observe the pieces after the failure looking as a "hot part of graphite". Also, after the nozzle failure, you can observe the difference in the plume (very turbulent).
I consolidated the following picture of the possible nozzle failure.

Seems like the cause of the last failure was a defect in the nozzle. They are taking additional precautions with this flight, in particular using X-ray CT (computed tomography) scans.

"We will pursue the cause of the trouble in "Pupel MOMO5 unit of Entotsu town" and aim at space again.
The Pupel MOMO5 in Entotsu Town, which was launched on June 14, recently, manually stopped the engine from the commanding office due to detection of an abnormality during flight, and safely landed on the surface of the sea in the warning area. Since this was likely to be damage to the engine nozzle, we conducted material characteristic inspection and non-destructive inspection of the engine nozzles, and we are proceeding with development quickly and steadily.
In addition, telemetry data for the launch on flights was released (https://github.com/istellartech/OpenMOMO). We publish flight data and aim to be a more open and transparent "everyone's rocket".
*Inspection using X-ray CT to confirm that there are no defects in the material"

Having counted all the launch attempts since Page 25 (including this morning), MOMO 7 has been scrubbed 7 times.
-
The aborts were caused by one of the temperature sensors not reading high enough temperatures at the expected time due to one of the two igniters being slow to ignite. I believe we see this in the first image for the first pad abort where red indicates a nominal temperature increase, exceeding the threshold at T-0.2 seconds, while blue shows an off-nominal temperature increase, where ignition appears to start two seconds later than normal. The slow ignition is thought to have been caused by a problem with supplying gaseous oxygen to the igniter, possibly by ice blocking the passage of oxygen. To fix the problem, they replaced the igniter and piping and added extra insulation.
For the second attempt we see that the temperature rise started at the correct time, but the response was too slow, just missing the threshold. They are still investigating the problem, but possible causes are contamination in the igniter or a temperature sensor problem. I think it might be a good idea to add heaters around the igniters and piping, to ensure they do not get too cold during long holds.
https://note.com/natsuroke/n/n6296a3662aee
"At the scheduled launch time (T-0 seconds), both temperature sensor installed values in the two igniters exceed the reference value (ignition of the igniter, ignition of the main engine The condition for launching is that the required amount of flame is coming out), but in the event on the 19th, one of the igniters was slow to ignite, and the specified temperature was not reached in time, so the computer of the rocket aircraft Stopped automatically. (Automatic stop is called abort)"
"This time, it was estimated that there was a problem with the piping part that sends gaseous oxygen to the igniter (enlarged view on the left side). Inside the pipe, there is a component called an orifice that controls the flow rate of gas oxygen, and the hole through which the gas flows in this orifice is about the size of a needle hole. There are several possibilities, but it is possible that contaminants such as ice have entered this orifice."
"As a countermeasure, the igniter is replaced, the igniter gas piping on the ground inside the fuselage is cleaned and replaced, and the temperature of the piping does not become negative to prevent ice contamination due to cooling when pouring liquid oxygen. Insulation measures were taken."
"The timing of the ignition, which I was working on last week due to a malfunction of the igniter, was normal. The ignition timing was normal, but the temperature rose slowly, and the temperature did not rise to the specified temperature within the time, so it was automatically stopped."
"We plan to investigate this in detail in the future, but at this point it is possible that physical combustion is not being done properly due to contamination, etc., and that the sensor that measures the igniter temperature is abnormal."

Not very clear when their next launch is. They seem to be in the middle of a major engine upgrade program and some big structural changes. I guess with all the mods they are testing or contemplating, they won't try to fly MOMO 7 then?
Their announcement of a new subsidiary filling out the services aspect of a vertically integrated provider seems like a decent move, in the steps of Rocketlabs and their whole Photon upper stage services activity.

https://twitter.com/natsuroke/status/1353978435060723712
Ah wait they've also announched Momo 6 launch for this summer, so maybe this is where the Tenga project will be launched.

Tenga are a company that sells sex toys (yes, really, not joking), they appear to have have sponsored the next Momo launch.
-
Tenga are a company that sells sex toys (yes, really, not joking), they appear to have have sponsored the next Momo launch.
Is it possible that the payload of the next Momo launch will be Tenga's?
-
Also, in the website of Tenga project (https://rocket.tenga.co.jp/) they cite a total of 3 missions sponsored by them, the last of which is supposed to reach "outer space". Is it safe to assume that this is confirming at least two more mission for Momo (Momo 6 for sure and maybe Momo 7?) and a mission for Zero, Interstellar Technology's upcoming orbital rocket?
-
The three missions are:
1: TENGA Mission Pod
2: Space TENGA Robo & Dog
3: Space TENGA
(1) Put the thoughts and wishes of 1,000 people gathered from everyone into a TENGA-type message POD and deliver them to space
(2) TENGA Robo boards a rocket and returns to Earth from outer space
(3) Start development of "TENGA for space" by installing TENGA for measurement on rockets
It got a bit weird at the transforming TENGA robot!

I think this is a screw themed launched due to their main sponsor/advertiser, judging by the payload fairing art. Sorta like Rocket Lab and their themed launch mission names.

[Press Release] Completely improved "Screw Rocket"
Interstellar Technologies Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Hiroo, Hokkaido), which independently develops and manufactures the sounding rocket "MOMO" and the ultra-small artificial satellite launch vehicle "ZERO", with the vision of "creating a future where everyone can reach space". Takahiro Inagawa, President and CEO of Taiki-cho, Gun, has been making complete improvements to the "Screw Rocket (MOMO No. 7)" (hereinafter referred to as "Screw Rocket"), which has been postponed since July 2020. This time, the design, manufacturing and assembly have been completed, and the improved version of the aircraft has been completed.
MOMO's policy of complete improvement is to maintain the MOMO concept of "low price and mass production" while increasing capacity and achieving higher launch reliability. We have made major updates to the entire engine, focusing on the engines that had problems with "Pupelle MOMO No. 5 (hereinafter referred to as MOMO No. 5)" and "Screw Rocket" in Entotsu Town. This is the first time that MOMO has been completely improved. In addition to improving launch reliability, we will also improve MOMO for mass production and frequent launches, and demonstrate technology for the development of ZERO, which is scheduled to launch the first unit in 2023. The conventional MOMO is called "MOMO v0" and the new model is called "MOMO v1". With the development of MOMO v1, we have made great strides toward mass production and commercialization of rockets.
[background]
The launch of the "Screw Rocket" in July 2020 was postponed because the safety device operated normally just before the launch due to a malfunction of the engine igniter and the launch sequence was automatically stopped.
In addition, the "MOMO No. 5" launched in June 2020 was urgently stopped to ensure safety because the attitude during flight was disturbed due to damage to the engine nozzle during flight.
In response to these, we decided to improve the entire MOMO and started improvement development from the summer of 2020.
[Overall improvement policy]
The problem with MOMO v0 is that problems may occur due to manufacturing and performance variations and the environment of the day. In addition, based on the experience of launching MOMO five times in the past, maintenance was one of the issues during repeated operations. Ease of operation is an important point for mass production of MOMO. In this full-scale improvement, we focused on four points: engine system, airframe equipment, avionics, and ground support equipment.

I'm curious to know the improvements of the Momo v1 version, but apart from that we're still without a date for the next Momo flight. And I'm also confused about the plans for the next launches: in the last months they said that there were going to be 3 launches sponsored by Tenga (the last of which should be orbital, so through Zero). What about this Momo 7 flight then? Is it just the first Tenga launch or a different one?
-
There are major updates to the engine, including a new SFRP (silicon fibre reinforced plastic) nozzle, new injectors and possibly a new igniter. Dry mass has increased by 40 kg (12%) and propellant mass increases by 30 kg (4%). Length has increased by 0.2 m (2%) and thrust by 2 kN (17%). There are also new electronics using SoC (System on Chip). They also have a new factory. If I Youtube translated correctly, there have been 29 engine tests.

Developing DECA, Japan's first commercial large rocket for satellite constellations
Interstella Technologies Co., Ltd. (Head office: Taiki-cho, Hiroo-gun, Hokkaido; President: Takahiro Inagawa; Interstella Technologies), a comprehensive space infrastructure company that aims to solve global issues through space transportation and space utilization, We are pleased to inform you that we have started the large rocket "DECA" (hereafter, DECA) project for the small satellite constellation (*1), which is the first private-sector initiative in Japan. Aiming to realize a service suitable for the era of mass transportation to space in the 2030s, we will actively contribute to securing a low-cost, self-sustaining future space transportation system in Japan.
Rocket DECA Development Background
Space transportation systems are infrastructure that supports the industrial base of the space market, which is expected to grow significantly in the future, and competition is intensifying worldwide with the entry of private companies, led by SpaceX (USA). If Japan were to lose its own means of launching, the loss of national interest would be enormous due to the loss of independent access to space. I'm here.
In July 2022, the Japanese government announced the "Roadmap Study Group Summary for the Realization of an Innovative Future Space Transportation System" (*2). It is said that it will develop a rocket that aims to The DECAs to be developed by Interstellar Technologies in the future are the sounding rocket "MOMO" (hereafter MOMO), which has a track record of reaching space three times so far, and the microsatellite launch vehicle "ZERO", which is being developed to launch the first unit. (hereafter ZERO), we will utilize the low-cost rocket technology that we have proven and accumulated in the development and production of ZERO, and by incorporating cutting-edge reuse technology, we will drastically reduce costs. By doing so, we will contribute to the enhancement of domestic space transportation capacity.
*1 A system that launches many small satellites into orbit and operates them in an integrated manner. Since many satellites can cover the entire earth, communication services and earth observation services can be realized efficiently. Satellites are becoming lighter and cheaper due to technological innovation, and many satellite constellation systems are being planned around the world.
*2 https://www.mext.go.jp/b_menu/shingi/chousa/kaihatu/024/toushin/mext_00001.html
Rocket DECA 3 strengths
DECA is a large rocket capable of not only forming small satellite constellations, but also inserting large satellites into orbit and transporting goods to the space station, contributing to the expansion of Japan's space transportation capabilities. We are also responsible for the construction of the satellite constellation that Our Stars Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Our Stars), a wholly owned subsidiary of Interstellar Technologies, Inc., which develops artificial satellites. Perform high mass launches.
Interstellar Technologies' rockets, both MOMO and ZERO, have achieved drastic cost reductions through design ingenuity and innovation in production technology, and DECA will inherit this concept. In addition, we will newly adopt reuse technology, which had little cost advantage for small rockets such as ZERO, along with the larger size, and build an internationally competitive space transportation service in Japan at a price that is an order of magnitude lower than before. increase.
Rapid growth of world space transportation
The global space market is expanding year by year, and the demand for satellites is growing significantly. In particular, the construction of small satellite constellations has become an indispensable technology for the spread of space utilization, such as the spread of Internet communication and the realization of a "super smart society" that utilizes satellite data.
Rockets are the only means of transporting satellites, and the number of launches around the world, centered on the United States and China, is increasing dramatically year by year. On the other hand, the number of satellite launches in Japan in 2022 will be 0 out of 174 worldwide (see the chart on the right), and much of the demand for domestic satellite launches is outflowing overseas. Furthermore, due to the effects of the Ukraine War, Japan and Western countries cannot use Russian rockets, which account for about 10% of the world's space transportation. I'm here.
Rocket DECA Name Origin
DECA is the SI prefix that indicates ten times the quantity of the base unit in the International System of Units (SI). Rocket DECA is named after ZERO (= 0), aiming for a one-digit evolution to handle mass transportation. It also takes into account the fact that the year 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the start of the Interstellar Technologies business.

This lot small LV compared to SS so lot easier to move around launch facility. SH is so large it really needs to be recovered next to launch pad.
While they've borrowed Neutron fairing design gone opposite path for vehicle recovery. RL traded simple pad for complex vehicle, Instellar complex pad for simple vehicle. Both have pros and cons.

At first glance the DECA catcher looks entirely passive though, making it pretty simple. There's no vertical trolley or chopstick arms, and possibly no horseshoe ring compensation (there might be something in the angled arms supporting the horseshoe ring, so the horseshoe might have a limited degree of freedom)

Rocket ZERO's propellant tank pressure test was successful!
At IST, we use aluminum alloy (A2219) for our tanks, which has high strength but requires advanced welding techniques, and performs the main processes from welding to testing in-house. Following the engine combustor unit test, this was an important development milestone.

Small satellite launch vehicle ZERO successfully conducts propellant tank pressure test
Interstellar Technologies Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Taiki-cho, Hiroo-gun, Hokkaido; President and Representative Director: Takahiro Inagawa; hereinafter referred to as Interstellar Technologies) is a comprehensive space infrastructure company that aims to solve Earth's problems through space transportation and space utilization. We are pleased to announce that the propellant tank pressure test (main test) of the small satellite launch vehicle "ZERO" (hereinafter referred to as ZERO) was successfully conducted at the Interstellar Technologies Structural Test Building in Taiki-cho, Hokkaido. The final process of welding the propellant tank was carried out at the main factory, and it was confirmed that the strength as designed was achieved. Interstellar Technologies will steadily proceed with the design, manufacture, and testing of each component in preparation for the launch of the first ZERO.
Acquired aluminum welding technology that requires advanced technology
Interstellar Technologies designs all the propellant tanks in-house, which contain the fuel liquefied biomethane and the oxidizer liquid oxygen. The tank is made of aluminum alloy (A2219), which is strong but requires advanced welding techniques, and the main processes from welding to testing are carried out in-house.
This time, we manufactured a sub-scale model of the rocket's second stage tank (width 1700mm, height 1731.5mm, thickness 3.5mm), which was tested to ensure that it could withstand the designed pressure. We conducted a ``destructive test'' to see how much pressure it could withstand. In the future, we will proceed with the development and manufacture of actual models based on the data obtained from this test.
[Propellant tank pressure test overview]
Test name: Propellant tank pressure resistance/guarantee test, bursting pressure test, destructive test
Test purpose: To confirm whether the propellant tank has the strength as designed
Date and time: 2023 December 11th and 13th
Location: Interstellar Technologies Structural Test Building (Taiki-cho, Hokkaido)
Test results: Confirmed that it could withstand the designed test pressure, and obtained data on strength, failure mode, etc.
[Specifications of Rocket ZERO]
Total length: 32m
Diameter: 2.3m
Total weight: 71t
Propellant: Fuel Liquefied methane (liquefied biomethane), oxidizer Liquid oxygen
Number of engines: 1st stage 9, 2nd stage 1
Launching capacity: LEO 800kg / SSO 250kg *Future maximum capacity
Strengths include competitive prices and dedicated launches
ZERO is a small rocket targeting small-sized satellites that have been driving market expansion in recent years. Based on the knowledge gained from the observation rocket MOMO, which was the first privately operated independent rocket to reach space in Japan, we are proceeding with development with the aim of launching the first vehicle.
The space transportation services provided by ZERO are realized through an all-in-one development and manufacturing system, with a launch cost of less than 800 million yen per aircraft (at the time of mass production), a competitive price, and a diversifying satellite business model. Our strength lies in our flexibility, which allows us to launch exclusively for the event. For satellite operators in Japan and Asia/Oceania countries, we will provide the added value of ``convenience'' by being close to the launch site and requiring no effort or cost until the launch.
Increasing ZERO's capacity and establishing a position in the Asia/Oceania market
The weight of the small satellites targeted by ZERO is in the 100 to 200 kg range. In order to keep an eye on recent trends and capture strong domestic and international demand, ZERO will increase its capacity to a rocket capable of launching up to 800 kg of satellite weight into low earth orbit (LEO). Through this, we will meet the goals set forth in this project, contribute to building a self-sustaining domestic space transportation service, and establish a position in the Asian/Oceanian and European markets.
