Current ROSAT orbit from Heavens Above

234 x 237 km, 53.0°  Oct 14
217 x 221 km, 53.0°  Oct 18

It took UARS about four days to reenter from a similar altitude. (Sept 20 to 24)

What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

WRT to reentry predictions, ROSAT is a much simpler shape to model than UARS, and also much more symmetrical. This should decrease the amount of tumbling, and increase the precision of the predictions.

We're getting close enough to reentry that ground tracks are starting to appear:

If you don't see the map with ground tracks, scroll to the bottom of the page.

Yikes! According to the ground tracks ROSAT actually stands a chance of crashing into it's very country of origin.

Let's hope it ends up in some ocean though...

The FAA has now issued a special notice relating to ROSAT....

Word is the satellite's 1.7 ton mirror will survive in one piece. Hopefully it will fall into an ocean.
Does anyone have a chance of seeing the fireshow?

According to this groundtrack http://www.lizard-tail.com/isana/lab/orb/misc/rosat_path.html we'll have some passes over Europe. Can the re-entry be seen in daylight?

Bearing in mind some  Iridium flares can be spotted in daylight , then there's always a chance , especially if ROSAT is on its final rev at the time and "Roast"ing.

In Europe we are in the firing line for the next five hours or so with three  good passes.

With the decay window ever tightening , looks like this will be the last time the satellite will pass over us . Re-entry now a possibility very early tomorrow morning.

I suspect that by the time Europe awakes Sunday morning  it will be sitting at the bottom of the Pacific.

I noticed the previous revolution passes over western US just before 01:00 UTC (18:00 PDT). This pass will be visible in southwest Oregon, northern California, west/southern Nevada and most of Arizona.

The passes in the predicted reentry period go over some fairly populated parts of the world, so there's a modest possibility that there will be pictures of the reentry. Still not all that probable because of the unfortunate geography of Planet Earth, but people in a position to do so should consider taking a look.  I'll have chance around 03:45 UTC and will be looking, camera at the ready, unless there's word ROSAT is already down.

See Heavens Above for your location and
http://digilander.libero.it/SATrack/VisualSATFlareTrackerOnline.html?q=20638#MAP for the general situation.

From DLR via Twitter:

Latest prediction on ROSAT re-entry: between 22 October 2011, 23:30 UTC & 23 October 2011, 05:00 UTC. Taking into account the most recent data, ROSAT will not re-enter over Europe.
