ROSCOSMOS: 40 YEARS OF MISSION "Soyuz - Apollo"

http://www.federalspace.ru/21582/

 15/07/2015 12:52

40 years ago it launched the first in the history of mankind a joint space flight of representatives of different countries.

Home Pilot Project "Soyuz - Apollo" was put on 26-27 October 1970.  At this time, in Moscow the first meeting of Soviet and American experts on compatibility of rendezvous and docking of manned spacecraft.  Two years later, in Moscow, an agreement was signed between the USSR and the United States on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes, which provided the docking of the Soviet spacecraft "Soyuz" and American spaceship "Apollo" in outer space with the mutual transfer of astronauts.

And on July 15, 1975 in 15 hours and 20 minutes from the Baikonur Cosmodrome launched "Soyuz-19" with cosmonauts Alexei Leonov (commander) and Valery Kubasova (flight engineer).  After seven and a half hours from Cape Canaveral (USA) flew the American "Apollo".  The crew includes US astronauts Thomas Stafford (commander), Donald Slayton (pilot) and Vance Brand (docking module pilot).

July 17 ships docked, becoming the prototype of the future of the International Space Station (ISS).  During the flight of the ships docked there have been four crew members transition between the ships.  Cosmonauts and astronauts are familiar with the equipment Allied ships, communicated, and conducted scientific experiments, according to the program, a lot of time devoted television broadcasts to Earth.  Were tested life support systems (in particular, the discharge pressure in the compartments of the ship up to 520 mm Hg), the automatic test system and the individual nodes of the docking assembly, and also forming mounting orbit altitude of 225 km.

July 19 undocked ships.  A flight stage coupled together lasted 43 hours 54 minutes 11 seconds.  It was then carried reconnect ships, where they perfect the use of a docking station "Soyuz", and after 2 hours 52 minutes 33 seconds was made final undocking.

ROSCOSMOS congratulates Alexei Leonov and Thomas Stafford, and - the Soviet-American team super pros who prepared the historical "dock" mission "Soyuz - Apollo" and all those who are today in space and here on Earth provides international space projects for the benefit of all mankind!

It would be an interesting technology comparison between the ASTP Soyuz and today's TMA series, especially with avionics.  I recall reading that the Russians insisted on high-precision cabin pressure monitoring for ASTP, mindful of the Soyuz 11/Salyut 1 accident.
Launches attended:  Apollo 11, ASTP (@KSC, not Baikonur!), STS-41G, STS-125, EFT-1, Starlink G4-24, Artemis 1
Notable Spacecraft Observed:  Echo 1, Skylab/S-II, Salyuts 6&7, Mir Core/Complete, HST, ISS Zarya/Present, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Dragon Demo-2, Starlink G4-14 (8 hrs. post-launch), Tiangong

Five years between first meetings and mission complete, impressive display of diplomacy and technology.
Space is not merely a matter of life or death, it is considerably more important than that!

Space Without Borders

July 15, 2015

July 15 at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics solemn event dedicated to the anniversary of the "Soyuz-Apollo".  The main guests were twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Soviet cosmonaut, commander of spacecraft "Soyuz-19" Aleksey Leonov and NASA astronaut, commander of the spaceship "Apollo" Thomas Stafford .

"Docking" Soyuz-19 "and" Apollo "was not only the docking of two ships, but two programs of great space powers - the Soviet Union and the United States," - said in his speech, the head of the Federal Space Agency "Roscosmos" Igor Komarov, while noting that "mission" Soyuz - Apollo "was the ambitious project is technically and politically."

Head of the Cosmonaut Training Center, Hero of the Russian Federation, cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov in his speech stressed that the joint flight of "Soyuz" and "Apollo" marked an important stage in the development of world cosmonautics.  "He opened a new chapter in international cooperation and space exploration.  It was a huge, valuable experience both sides - said Yuri Lonchakov.  - Today, instructors, cosmonauts and astronauts from different countries to share experiences, conduct joint experiments on the ISS.  In space, there are no boundaries.  We are working together in orbit for the benefit of the entire Earth.  With the opening of the hatches in the space between the two ships began a new era in the development of manned space world, and we keep it. "

The guests of the meeting addressed the crew of the International Space Station as part of the Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka , Mikhail Kornienko and NASA astronaut Scott Kelly .  Cosmonauts and astronauts congratulated senior colleagues on the anniversary of their landmark meeting in orbit, as well as all those who worked on the first international expedition and continues to develop the partnership between the two countries.

As part of the celebrations held "round table" with the participation of Alexei Leonov and Thomas Stafford.  In an interview attended by not only the famous explorers of the cosmos, but also those without whom their flight would have been impossible - crew trainer (at the dock), a member of the CPC, Vladimir Baranov, and a removable head Viktor flight benefits.  The commanders of the "Union" and "Apollo" shared memories of flight and preparation for it, the difficulties that had to be overcome on the way to "space handshake" and celebrate the successful implementation of a unique task.  According to T. Stafford, in the Soviet Union he met not only the finest professionals and lifelong friends - Alexei Leonov, Alexei Yeliseyev , Valery Kubasova .

Recall that on Thursday, the festivities will take place in Star City.  Alexey Leonov and Thomas Stafford visit CPC Gagarin, where more than 40 years ago, they were preparing for the historic flight, meet with the staff of the Centre, to communicate with journalists, as well as take part in founding a memorial alley.

It was great that 'Deke' finally got a chance to fly after all those years of being grounded and seeing all the other crews off on their missions.

It's funny to notice that it was Apollo-Soyuz in the west and Soyuz-Apollo in the east. Even the badges were reversed!

I remember photographing the TV image of the launch. Too bad it was the last Saturn to fly. They could have done so much more.

It would be interesting to Photoshop a Falcon F9 onto the Saturn IB, LC39 launch pedestal, since it's going to use the same launch complex.  :D

Funny -- ASTP was a makework program in many ways, the "technical" demonstration of the docking system was a weak argument for flying the mission, and almost no actual science return came from it.

The entire mission was all about politics, nothing else.  So it's ironic you call it something that happened because politics was "put aside"...  If politics had been put aside, this mission would never, ever have been flown.

The HP-65 card programmable calculator flew on ASTP as backup to the CMC:

Anyone here got one? I couldn't afford it so I got a TI SR-56 and later a TI-59. Now I also have an HP-65 in my retrocomputing collection:

Interesting -- the CMC actually glitched and went offline while Apollo was burning into orbit on its Saturn.  They went to the backup SCS control mode, and got the CMC back online after orbital insertion.  Did they use the HP-65 at all during that CMC glitch, does anyone know?

http://www.hpmuseum.org/adverts/sa65spc.htm

"The American astronauts calculated critical course-correction maneuvers on their HP-65 programmable hand-held during the rendezvous of the U.S. and Russian spacecraft.

"Twenty-four minutes before the rendezvous in space, when the Apollo and Soyuz were 12 miles apart, the American astronauts corrected their course to place their spacecraft into the same orbit as the Russian craft. Twelve minutes later, they made a second positioning maneuver just prior to braking, and coasted in to linkup.

"In both cases, the Apollo astronauts made the course-correction calculations on their HP-65. Had the on-board computer failed, the spacecraft not being in communication with ground stations at the time, the HP-65 would have been the only way to make all the critical calculations. Using complex programs of nearly 1000 steps written by NASA scientists and pre-recorded on magnetic program cards, the astronauts made the calculations automatically, quickly, and with ten-digit accuracy.

"The HP-65 also served as a backup for Apollo's on-board computer for two earlier maneuvers. Its answers provided a confidence-boosting double-check on the coelliptic (85 mile) maneuver, and the terminal phase initiation (22 mile) maneuver, which placed Apollo on an intercept trajectory with the Russian craft.

"Periodically throughout their joint mission, the Apollo astronauts also used the HP-65 to calculate how to point a high-gain antenna precisely at an orbiting satellite to assure the best possible ground communications.

The official name of this flight was :
- ASTP (Apollo-Soyuz Test Project) in the USA
- EPAS (Экспериментальный полёт «Аполлон» — «Союз») in the USSR.

The Mission Of Apollo / Soyuz - 1975 Educational Documentary

wdtvlive42 - Archive Footage
Published on Jul 30, 2017

The Apollo / Soyuz mission was a joint American & Russian spacecraft rendezvous project, and the film stresses the spirit of cooperation and friendship that helped make the mission a success. It generally follows the mission's timeline, with appropriate flashbacks to detail the period of development and training, and concludes with a glimpse into the future of international cooperation in space, featuring the space shuttle and the European project, Spacelab.
