It's not me that's disagreeing. LRD (Landing and Recovery Division) is a valid acronym even if it is historic. My original post did say that it was abolished in 1972. By the same arguement as used by Jim, do we discard also FITH, FIDO, LOS and other acronyms from the Apollo era?

LRD is a valid acronym for Landing and Recovery Director, it was in use much longer and much more times as that so it is the primary definition. Landing and Recovery Division has now be relegated to a secondary or historical definition.

Yes,  we discard acronyms if they are no longer in use or if the original definition has changed.  The list here is for people to use going forward.  If there is a question about an acronym from the  past, it can go in the historical section.

I can't think why you're so intent on disagreeing with me on this. I've never suggested that Landing and Recovery Director wasn't a valid definition. All I've suggested that is that prior to 1972 a definition of Landing and Recovery Division was an equally good one also.

Let's leave it at that shall we? Or are you that determined to have the last word? Surely, in the context of this thread both should be listed.

the aim of my list was just to help not-particularly-informed readers like me to understand what particularly-informed writers say, as they usually use a huge number of acronyms and they do not care about explaining what even the most cryptics of them mean.

So, obsolete acronyms are welcome as well as news. Thanks.

While browsing elsewhere I was hung-up on "HEOMD" in several threads. It's missing from this grand list.

My Google-Fu was sufficient to discover that's NASA's "Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate," which apparently makes the short- to long-range mission planning timelines for HSF, both robotic and crew.

Another one to add -

RCCA - Recovery Control Centre Atlantic (from the Apollo days. Presumably there was a RCCP too).

SAM wouldn't work, would it?  Err...no, that's a military term for Surface To Air Missile.  Sorry, just trying to help out here.  :)

I created a document (see attachment) listing all acronyms used in space flight. The list is still 99.9% a cut & past from the NASA Acronym list. However, many acronyms currently used in this blog and elsewhere are not yet included.

I will keep it updated by asking people to supply a translation of any acronym used in a post. You can even add by posting here.

I will update the document time by time and attach the latest version to this post.

Please write me or post in the thread if you have any suggestion or

cheers,
pagheca
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you!

There are acronyms used by other government agencies too. I use Mike Collin's terminology. I know NASA-ese, Air Force-ese and as a senior citizen I am learning VA-ese.
