Columbia STS-9 / Spacelab 1 - Screenshots
« on: 12/26/2011 09:25 AM »
In August 1973 NASA and the European Space Agency ESA had agreed to develop a reusable manned science laboratory, which could be flown aboard the space shuttle in variable configurations. ESA would build two
Spacelab long modules and several pallets. In return there would be a flight opportunity for a West-European citizen aboard the first flight Spacelab 1.

So job offers for "science astronauts" went out in 1977 - this one by the German Institute for Aerospace Research and Development (Deutsche Forschungs- und Versuchsanstalt für Luft- und Raumfahrt - DFVLR)

Three Europeans - Wubbo Ockels (The Netherlands), Claude Nicollier (Switzerland) and Ulf Merbold (West-Germany) - were selected as candidates for the position aboard Spacelab 1. NASA nominated Michael Lampton and Byron Lichtenberg as American scientists to join the group.

Since West-Germany had assumed project leadership and contributed more than half of the 850 million US dollars for Spacelab, it was not really a surprise that Ulf Merbold finally became the first non-American to launch into space aboard a U.S. spacecraft. Wubbo Ockels was nominated as possible backup. NASA put Byron Lichtenberg into the second PS seat aboard Spacelab 1, with Michael Lampton as backup. All selected Spacelab science astronauts would support Merbold and Lichtenberg during training and flight operations.

The media called him "Unser Ulf" (Our Ulf) and "Unser Mann im All" (Our Man in Space) and we West-Germans took great interest into this mission, since we had a chance to "get even" with communist East-Germany. The German Democratic Republic had flow their "Fliegerkosmonaut" Sigmund Jähn aboard Soyuz 31 / Salyut 6 in 1978. Remember - back then there was a Cold War between the western and the communist world and these facts mattered a lot. (I will return to Sigmund Jähn at the end of this STS-9 thread...)

Since most Spacelab training took place at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Merbold and his family - his wife Birgit (a school teacher) and their children Susanne and Hannes - temporarily moved to the US.
