The first mission dedicated to monitoring global air quality for Europe’s Copernicus programme has passed an important milestone: the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite platform is complete, ready to meet its Tropomi instrument.

Built by Airbus Space and Defence in the UK, the platform is based on Astrobus. A hexagonal structure, it acts as a service module and support for the mission’s tropospheric monitoring instrument.

Sentinel-5 Precusor is planned to be launched in 2016 to provide timely data on a multitude of trace gases and aerosols affecting air quality and the climate.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has converted a previously contracted back-up launch on a Rockot to a firm agreement with Eurockot Launch Services GmbH for placing into orbit an additional spacecraft from the Copernicus Sentinel range of satellites. Sentinel-5p will be the third satellite from this series to be launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome on a Rockot.

Strange that they went with Rockot while they are stating that's important to have assured access to space with Vega. I mean, they are already launching some Sentinels on each.

This is an ESA mission, therefore the launch provider is selected and contracted directly by ESA; the satellite contractor (Astrium/Airbus DS in this case) being required to design a satellite compatible with the selected launcher. There is no money going from Airbus DS to Rockot.

The other option for S5p was a Vega launch, by Arianespace, of which Airbus DS is a major shareholder. On top of that, the Madrid site of Airbus DS manufactures some parts for Vega.

At the end, I'm not convinced that the selection of Rockot was a financial choice by Airbus...

I read that the (EU) Rockot Sentinel 5p launch is planned for june this year.

European satellite with Dutch core ready for launch

The Sentinel-5P satellite, with the Dutch space instrument Tropomi at its core, is ready for launch. After its launch, Tropomi will monitor the air quality and spread of greenhouse gases with unprecedented precision. In early October, a Russian Rokot-type rocket will place the satellite into orbit from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Siberia. The Sentinel-5P was seen for the last time today in the cleanroom of Airbus UK in Stevenage, before being prepared for transport to the launch pad.

The aim of the European megaproject Copernicus is to deploy satellites to monitor the safety and health of our planet. Working on instructions from the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA) has already launched five Sentinel satellites into space, all of which are observing the Earth through their own electronic eyes. Sentinel-5P is the latest addition to the Copernicus stable, this time packed with Dutch-made high tech, combined to form the technological tour de force, Tropomi. Its mission: to analyse the Earth’s atmosphere, every day, across the globe, with unprecedented precision.

And not before time, says Pepijn Veefkind from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), which manages the scientific side of the project together with the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON). ‘Previous satellite readings provided data about the air quality above urbanised areas around the world, such as Western Europe and Eastern China. The red patches on the maps we compiled from this data speak for themselves. The high-accuracy observations made by Tropomi will give us pointers for tackling the problem.’

Pointers are sorely needed to come to grips with the climate problem. Tropomi is expected to make an important contribution in this respect, by literally mapping the routes taken by greenhouse gases through the Earth’s atmosphere. Veefkind: ‘A gas like methane, for example, might be much less prevalent in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, yet it has a much more powerful greenhouse effect. Tropomi will show where it’s coming from and where it’s going.’

Several technological developments realised by the aerospace company Airbus in Leiden, and incorporated into the global concept, are crucial to Tropomi. Sytze Kampen from Airbus: ‘Our partners SRON and TNO came up with the idea of immersed gratings. It’s a clever optical trick that allows the whole instrument to be forty times smaller. Pure profit in space engineering terms.’

The Dutch government has invested a total of € 80 million in the development of the space project, thanks to an agreement signed with ESA in 2009 by former Minister of Economic Affairs, Maria van der Hoeven. This allowed the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) to award the contract to the consortium that developed Tropomi. This will lead to more than just new scientific insights, says deputy-director of NSO, Nico van Putten: ‘We are capitalising in a field where the Netherlands is already a world leader. Tropomi is creating opportunities for new international projects for Dutch space technology.’

The advanced technology used for Tropomi is the life’s work of many Dutch engineers, which is why a final glimpse of the satellite is so special, says Sytze Kampen from Airbus in Leiden. ‘This is the final result of a combination of Dutch high tech and years of dedication from a close team of specialists. Seeing a project actually ready for launch is a rare occurrence in the career of a space engineer.’

Tropomi is a collaboration between Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands, KNMI, SRON and TNO. It was commissioned by NSO and ESA. Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands is the principal contractor for developing the instrument, while scientific management is in the hands of KNMI and SRON. Funding for TROPOMI was provided by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.

With Sentinel-5 Precursor about to be packed up and shipped to Russia for liftoff in late September, media representatives, members of the UK Space Agency and National Centre for Earth Observation had the chance to see this Copernicus air-pollution monitoring satellite standing proud in the cleanroom.

Sentinel-5 Precursor – also known as Sentinel-5P – is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere.

It has been built to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane that affect air quality.

The satellite will help to identify pollution hotspots where public health could be at risk. It will also contribute to services that warn of high levels of UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer, and volcanic ash monitoring for aviation safety.

Carrying the Tropomi instrument, the most advanced of its kind, Sentinel-5P will map the entire planet every 24 hours. The availability of accurate and up-to-date information will help decision-makers to fight air pollution and climate change.

Sentinel-5P is the forerunner of the Sentinel-5 mission to be carried on the MetOp Second Generation satellites that will be launched in a few years. Until then Sentinel-5P will deliver much needed information to monitor and track air pollution.

The media event was held at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, UK, where the satellite was built and tested.

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher, said, “It’s wonderful to see the satellite in all its glory, and it’s thanks to a truly collaborative effort that it will take the EC’s Copernicus programme into a new era of atmospheric monitoring.

“ESA is very grateful to the Netherlands for its substantial contribution to the Tropomi instrument. The mission as a whole was designed and built by a consortium of 30 companies under the leadership of Airbus Defence and Space.”

Nico van Putten, Deputy Director of the Netherlands Space Office, added, “The development and the implementation of the top-notch Tropomi instrument for Sentinel-5P is thanks to the remarkable close cooperation between different entities from all over Europe.

“As a Dutch institution we are proud to contribute to this marvel of space technology, which will now help to tackle global challenges, making Europe even stronger in Earth observation.”

Pepijn Veefkind from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI, added, “Every day, Tropomi will make almost 20 million observations of important air pollutants and gases affecting the climate.

“KNMI will use this data to improve air-quality forecasts and to keep a close eye on emission increases or reductions, and to monitor what mitigation measures are effective in protecting the air we breathe.”

Engineers will now prepare the satellite for shipment to the Plesetsk launch site in Russia. Once there it will be thoroughly tested and prepared for launch in late September.

The Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite on show at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, UK, before it is packed up and shipped to the Plesetsk launch site. It is the first Copernicus mission dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere. The satellite carries the state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe and therefore our health, and our climate. With a swath width of 2600 km, it will map the entire planet every day. Information from this new mission will be used through the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service for air quality forecasts and for decision-making.
