Project Constellation has proposed two launch vehicle for the VSE, which are discribed in the ESAS.  The Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV) for launching the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV).  The other is the Cargo Launch Vehicle (CaLV),  which uses an Earth Departure Stage (EDS) to propel the LSAM, DSS (and hopefully MTV) to their destinations.  Both are SDLV's (Shuttle Derived Launch Vehicles) and the CaLV may be categorized as and HLLV (Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle.

Hi Jim, excuse my poor English

But,  does CEV translates into   "Vehicle of Exploration of the Crew"  ?

Is not better, Crewed Exploration Vehicle ?

you could say it that way.  If it was the MEV, it would be Manned Exploration Vehicle vs Man Exploration Vehicle

You are correct.  I was agreeing with him over the symantics.

CEV should technically be the Crewed Exploration Vehicle just like if it was  the MEV

Manned Exploration Vehicle vs Man Exploration Vehicle

Destination Support Systems - Habitats, power sources, science instruments, etc, things you need once you get there.

is project Constellation to project Apollo what CSM is to CEV?

so when I talk of this program, i would say Constellation just as if I was talking about Apollo?
would the missions be named somwthing like Constellation 8 sort of like Apollo 8 or do you this they would go by somethings like Constellation CEV or just CEV mission 8?

and am I right about CEV: CSM
Speed = Life iff Life = Speed

I don't know whether I saw it in the ESAS or some other powerpoint presentention but I have seen the term "Constellation-1, 2, 3 ...etc."  With Constellation-4 being the 7th manned lunar landing.  Whether that is what the missions will end up being designated is another story.

Anybody have any idea when the vehicles are going to get official names?  Is "Altair", "Ares I & V" official yet?

Not yet. Unfortunately, the launch vehicles themselves aren't official, either.

They are (you wouldn't have seen the Administrator giving a press conference about them if they weren't); just not their final configuration...

Simon ;)

The names are notional.  Not permanent.  They will have a naming "contest' later

We can agree to disagree on semantics. If the mission outline and vehicle configurations are in flux, and no contracts have been signed, the money's not yet in the bank, and no metal is being bent, then it's not "official" -- it's a "study." Griffin can give another press conference when that changes.
