1/144th Scale Falcon 9 Models
« on: 09/20/2013 02:38 am »
I am going to try a build thread now, and see how this project goes.  I am building a SpaceX Falcon 9 with Dragon beginning with some 3D printed parts from Shapeways and a bunch of plastic tubes and strips.  I hope it works.

First, the parts. There are 4 main parts that were printed for me.
Engine Cluster
Bottom of First Stage
Engine fairings
Dragon with nosecone and heat shield.

I also need an 1" diameter plastic tube.

The engine cluster requires the engines to be removed and a short spruce cut off so they can be glued in place.  Then, I cut the main body tube to length.  I glued the first stage base to the bottom of the tube followed by the engine cluster.

Next, I attached all of the engine fairings.

Next up, I used some graphic tape to represent some structure bands seen on the first stage, and added some conduits by using some plastic strip.  I also scratch built what I think is a camera I see in some of the pictures.

That is it for now!  Thanks for looking!  I look forward to feed back  and ideas on how to make this more accurate.

Really nice approach for your build using these 3D printed parts, which looks great.

I stay tuned.

Mind sharing all the STL?

Maybe the design files also if you feel really generous?

I don't have the files.  They are posted at Shapeways by the designer and then you can order the printed parts.  Here is a link to the designer's page.  He also made the parts for a payload fairing.

It is your design?  It is very detailed.  Great job.  I ordered a second capsule, hoping to convert it to a Dragonrider.  But it looks like now that will use the next version of the Falcon 9 with the new engine layout.

Edit: I see in the comments on Thingverse that the designer on Shapeways modified your design so Shapeways could print it.  I wish I could get your version with the separate trunk printed in 1/144th scale!

Here is a finished Dragon.  I put a magnet inside the heat shield so I can attach the trunk when I build that.

Thanks Soheil!

Did the second stage this morning.  I can't find too many images of the Merlin Vacuum engine on the second stage, so I just built a general shape for now by modifying an extra J-2 engine from my spares box.

Started working on the launch version of the trunk.  I will do a separate orbital version later.

Then I brushed primer on the engines and stage bottom.

Looks good Ronpur! Great to see someone building an F9/Dragon.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Well Hobbes010's model is derived from an earlier, slightly less accurate model of mine. But really the only visible difference from the older model to the current is the scale of the CBM.

The trunk I modeled is pretty simple and doesn't really have details.

Very cool.

Working on my trunks.

One is for the launch configuration with the solar panel shroud and the other will have the flight configuration with solar panel extended.  I downloaded a paper model to help build and fill in the details.  It, however is a lot shorter than what was called for in the instructions from the 3D parts.  I haven't found any listing of the length of the first stage.  I need to figure this out before I do anymore work on the first stage.

One trunk is almost done.  The flight version had its first test fit of its solar panels.

On the height of the rocket, I found a reference to 53 meters which scales out pretty close to my model.  I would have to remove .5 cm to make it exact.  I think I will leave it.

And finally, a quick inspection was conducted by my biggest helper, whose name is Apollo.
