NSF Readership Numbers 2017
« on: 12/17/2017 10:03 PM »
This thread is a collection of data we're releasing to show NSF's readership numbers. Reporting period is the 12 month period of Mid-Dec, 2016 to Mid-Dec, 2017.

The data is collected by Google Analytics that we have embedded into the site.

Most sites show readership numbers to potential advertisers. Some show readership numbers as summaries. We've tended to show more data (and proof - as I'm sure we've all seen some sites around the web claim numbers and now show them), also allowing for some occasional questions about geo-interest and so on to be shown.

This review is also for our own purposes as we move the news site to a new design (including far more mobile friendly) - although "content is everything".

First, that summary! Again interesting, as the historical nature of this site continues (albeit with continually growing numbers) where the news site has the most "people", but the forum has the most "reads" via it being interactive but more specialist for the seasoned space flight fan.

Even more encouraging than the growing numbers are the consistency of use. Sure, a SpaceX launch will mean more people on site that day, but it's very consistent throughout the year, no big dips, a good high average and some mini-bumps for big events.

Another take home is the strength of the news site. I knew the forum would have good numbers, but the news site is much stronger than I thought and this is before we improve its presentation and accessibility. This will in turn feed into the "clickthrough" to the forum.

News Site:
Uniques: 2,648,264
Visitors (sessions) 8,387,590
Page Views: 13,797,628

Forum:
Uniques: 1,037,603
Visitors (sessions): 6,071,040
Page Views: 50,365,051

Below are some examples expanding on the numbers and the geographics.

Some numbers and visuals for the news site readership:

One graph is more countries. The list goes all the way down to the lowest readership country, with his North Korea, with 1 for the year! (I wonder who that is! ;D)

News Site 2017. United States breakdown.

Includes top States (You'll need to click that attachment to help you read it as it's squashed by the length of it).

And then an example of Florida, where you can see how it becomes more obvious for a site like ours.

(The numbers used in this are "sessions".)

Great job Chris.  Just the kind of information I like to dwell on.  Hope the numbers (subscribers, viewership, etc., ) are on an increasing trend over the years.  Hoping for even better numbers for 2018.  Tony D.
